THE Blackall Anglican Ladies Guild pulled out all the stops for the 80th year of their annual fundraiser last Saturday, dressing up in 1920s-style clothing to recreate the scene at the first ever Blackall Flower Show in 1929.

Blackall-Tambo mayor Jan Ross said that back then the cooking for the day would have been done with coppers and wood stoves and the water boiled up in billies.

Organiser Trethella Smith said that they were thrilled with the day and that everyone had made a huge effort.

Around 250 show-goers enjoyed afternoon tea and many more watched entertainment from students from Blackall State School and St Joseph’s Blackall, who presented much of the talent that won them awards at the Charleville Eisteddfod.

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

Blackall Beef Producers Race Day

Saturday, October 17 5 RacesandMusic till late!!

THE MISSING LINK!!! I was extremely disappointed to hear the news of imminent flight cuts and cost hikes from the Qantas Link community meeting this morning. Qantas Link representative Chris Brooker and Queensland Department of Transport and main Roads Principal Advisor (aviation) for Regional Transport Programs Andrew Mahon were very quick to assure those attending the meeting this was a temporary measure while Qantas rides out the effects of the global economic downturn. The services to Blackall and Barcaldine are not subsidized by government as are some of the remote regional air services. In the interest of EQUITY I would encourage you all to make your concerns known to Qantas Link and to the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Passenger Transport, GPO Box 213 Brisbane, QLD 4001.

From September 21 2009, fares will increase by $20.00. From October 19 2009 the Wednesday flight to and from Blackall will be cancelled. The Saturday flight into Barcaldine will also be cancelled at this time. Please contact your travel agent if you have bookings arranged. I understand there will be a full refund made.

While this could be termed a “KING HIT” we will get our breath back and go into bat for our region and the community of Blackall!

The Blackall Tambo Regional Council will be actively lobbying the relevant Ministers as well as the Member for Gregory Vaughan Johnson on this matter. In the meantime we are planning to go ahead with the upgrade of the apron of the Blackall Airport so that we can accommodate the Q400 aircraft in the future.

This definitely NOT “GOOD NEWS WEEK” here in Blackall. Arts West Inc. have advised the closure of Artesian Arts for the past 11 years on Shamrock Street. This has been the retail outlet for the artists of the entire Central Western region. This is indeed another real body blow to our town!!

Some fortunate folk would have received falls of rain while the cloud was about however the general result of the cloudy days was most disappointing. Next change?

GOOD NEWS!!!The first sections of both the Ward Road and the

Emmet Road were sealed this week. I understand there is a further section to be completed on both these roads. This will be most beneficial to all who use these roads with in the region as well as for the welcome visitors we have during the season.

The eightieth anniversary of the Blackall Anglican Ladies Guild Flower Show was a most enjoyable afternoon. Opened by Canon Ken Raff the program was made very special by the performances of the students from the Blackall State School and from St. Josephs School. The community choir also entertained the audience on the day. Canon Raff, supported by wife Pam, presented many prizes for all sections which were very well supported. My congratulations to this very community spirited committee.

It was disappointing not to have any country garden entries again this year in the Blackall Garden Competition. Congratulations to all who entered and of course well done to the award winners.

While pleased with the induction, Nev modestly sees what he does as a job that just needs doing.

In the eyes of others in the industry, however, he is considered a legend in his own time.

Over 400 truck drivers and transport industry professionals travelled to Alice Springs for the induction. The annual event is a highlight of the road transport calendar and provides the opportunity to recognise a lifetime of service for the inductees.

This year forty-six new members were inducted onto the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame at the National Road Transport Hall of Fame in Alice Springs.

Michael Anderton, Shell’s Transport and Industry Marketing Manager says “It’s such a great experience to come up to Alice Springs and honour the lives and achievements of the characters from the Australian transport sector.”

Noske into hall of fame THE National Director of Sing

Australia, Colin Slater OAM, will be answering this question at a free workshop to be held in Blackall on Tuesday, September 15 at the Uniting Church Hall, 24 Clematis Street from 7:30pm.

According to Slater, singing is for everyone – men and women and not just the ‘good’ singers – and he has been telling communities all around Australia for the past 10 years.

Slater’s visit to Blackall on Tuesday will take the form of a fun singing session. Participants will enjoy singing some great songs and will discover Sing Australia’s friendly and inclusive approach to singing.

In setting out with a mission for Australia to be a country where everyone sings, Colin Slater formed a company in 1985 called Sing Australia.

From that time on he has worked tirelessly in building a network of singing groups across Australia under the umbrella of Sing Australia. There are now 135 singing

groups and around 5,500 members around Australia.

There is no need to book. A light supper will be provided.

Further details are available by contacting Sing Australia on 1300 552 296 or visiting [email protected] or www.singaustralia.com.au.

Don Wheeler presented Ricky Richardson and Peter Dallas of the Blackall SES with their service medals. Both received medals for 10 years of continuous service, while Peter also received his 15 year service medal

Clad in 1920s clothing, President Trethella Smith had the honour of cutting the 80th anniversary cake

the diocese of Rockhampton. Local resident Alice Collins, the most senior active member of the Guild, was to cut the 80th birthday cake but on the day was unwell, with the honour passed to President of 20 years, Trethella Smith.

Trethella said the day brought a total taking of $7400, similar to last year, which was a great result for the group’s major annual fundraiser. The profit will go towards the local parish council and general expenses of running the parish.

There were 166 entries in the blooms section this year, fewer than last year, which Trethella attributed to the unseasonal temperatures in August.

“We’ve never had a winter this warm before; many of the flowers were blooming too early.”

A disappointing number of cookery entries were received; numbers were very much down on

last year.In its second year, the Florifoto

photographic competition received high quality entries, all from local contributors.

The JR Bauer Memorial Aggregate Trophy in the blooms section of the Flower Show went to Margaret Turner.

Other winners in the blooms section were: Champion Bloom – Doreen Walmsley, Champion Carnation – Meryl Gibson, Champion Australian Native – Helen Burton, Champion Rose – Helen Burton, Champion Rose Collection – Owen Stockwell.
