Local entrepreneur Ian Kinsey has been rewarded for his continued development of businesses in Blackall with the announcement last Saturday night that his Blackall supermarket was named Store of the Year at the 2009 SPAR Gala Awards.

SPAR Australia General Manager for Retail Operations, Travis Cunnane, said that it was great to see someone who has invested so much in his local town and for him to be recognised for his efforts.

“Ian employs many of the locals and devotes a lot of time to training his staff, so it’s great to reward someone who has given a lot to his local community.”

Born and raised in Blackall, Mr Kinsey has spent all but five years of his life living in the town. He moved away for the final two years of senior school and again for three years studying pharmacy at Queensland University. He has also since completed post-graduate studies in clinical pharmacy.

As the owner of numerous businesses in Blackall, including a pharmacy, toy store, Retravision and clothing store, and with a wealth of experience dealing with wholesalers, Mr Kinsey says that each of his outlets requires a

different approach and operates in a different way.

He went on to say that running numerous businesses in town has both benefits and consequences.

“I am committed to this town for the long-term.”

“I am glad that Blackall is going ahead. It gives me a lot of confidence to invest.”

“Winning this award gives us confidence in everything we have been working for.”

Mr Kinsey acknowledged the part his customers and almost 30 staff members have played in the success of the business.

“I’ve got a lot of supporters in the town, and if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be here today,” he said.

“The staff are great. They enjoy coming to work and it shows in their attitude. They create a buzz for the shoppers that keeps them coming back, and because of that they’ve been able to build a great rapport with our customers.”

Mr Kinsey has said that things have been so successful that he plans to open another 5 Star store in the main street in the near future.

The display of some of the most influential documents which have affected the course of the history of Queensland at the Blackall Living Arts Centre was open for the early part of last week with an opening on Wednesday by Blackall Historical Society President Christine Campbell. Those attending were able to view the photographs of these, mostly handwritten, documents which began with the first settlement in what we now call Queensland.

A Q150 initiative, the display certainly gave all who viewed it a real sense of the history which shaped our earliest years and is still doing so today. I do hope the community of Blackall took advantage of the opportunity to view this unique display. It is something which could be displayed far more often and widely to give the people of our state an even greater knowledge of how we have come to this point.

On behalf of the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council I extend our congratulations to CEO Ken Timms on his election as President of the LGMA Queensland Division. It is a prestigious achievement and wish him every success for the year to come.

The Tambo Garden Competition was judged on October 7. Champion Garden and Best Flower Garden - Marilyn Hobbs, Best Landscaped Garden - Jane Turner, Best Senior’s Garden - Clive & Bessie McGee, Best Native Garden - Randall Ellison, Best Non-Domestic Garden - Tambo Primary Health Care Centre, Neatest Yard by a Group - Tambo State School, Judges awards went to Jo Cooper and neighbours in Arthur Street - Willie Skennerton, Merlene Hafey, Alice Wilshire and Cheryl Smith. Judges were complimentary but commented on the lack of waterwise practices.

The Blackall Hospital ‘Springtime Festival’ held for the first time in

Banks Park was a resounding success for the organizing committee under the leadership of Veronica Driver.

The event was held in the evening and attracted a large crowd of supportive patrons who enjoyed the fun of the fair. I was disappointed to miss out on the cheese cake and coffee in the up-market café complete with fragrant roses. It was a great night out in Blackall. Council had committed to an upgrade of the power facilities at Banks Park prior to the festival. The power failure experienced during the festival was due to a ‘hot joint’ in Ergon Energy’s fuse holder. The fuse was replaced and the lights came on!!!!

THE MISSING QANTAS LINK. I am not able to offer too much hope in the quest to retain our Wednesday flight into Blackall after a meeting in Brisbane with various Qantas, government and local council reprensentatives. We certainly did try extremely hard to have the flights maintained as a subsidized flight for the time being, however according to Qantas the numbers do not reflect the commercial return to continue the service into our communities. There are still some questions to be answered and a meeting will be convened at the country cabinet meeting in Barcaldine on November 2. Perhaps members of our disadvantaged community will use the opportunity to acquaint the Premier and her Ministers of their displeasure at these decisions. Sadly, I and Deputy Mayor Peter Skewes flew into Blackall on the last Wednesday flight for the foreseeable future. I would really like some response from the community - “DO YOU THINK WE WILL HAVE A REASONABLE AIR SERVICE WITH TWO FLIGHTS PER WEEK????” Please let the council office know. PHONE NOW 4621 6600.

Blackall welcomes local flooring centre

Sam and Andrew Shale in their Blackall Flooring Centre which officially opens on Monday, October 19

Deputy Mayor Peter Skewes and Mayor Jan Ross both arrived back in Blackall this week on Q-Link’s last Wednesday flight service

This week the last Wednesday Q-Link flight service arrived into town, following the recent decision by the company to remove one of the three-weekly routes to Blackall due to lagging economic benefits from the route.

Blackall Tambo Regional Council Mayor Jan Ross flew to Brisbane earlier this week to meet with Minister for Transport Rachel Nolan, policy advisors from the Queensland Department of Transport, QANTAS representatives, Barcaldine Regional Council Mayor Rob Chandler and Weipa Town Authority Councillor Carrie Gay.

Cr Ross said that she was extremely disappointed with the outcome of the meeting, with both QANTAS and government advisors standing by their decision.

“In the midst of this economic crisis, why should we have to suffer?”

“I wanted them to reinstate the Wednesday flight service until it could be sorted out but there is just no flight subsidy coming from the government.”

Cr Ross will attend further meetings with Minister for Transport Rachel Nolan on November 2 to continue to push the urgency of the reinstating the Wednesday flight service into Blackall.

Mid-week Q-Link flights terminate

A main street shop front in Blackall will officially be open for business on Monday next week, thanks to Andrew and Sam Shale from Babindah, who have moved to Blackall and set up a flooring centre.

The Shales moved to Blackall in June with two of their five children, 3-year old Nicholas and 1-year old Sandra Ellen, to be closer to family members here.

For several months during the tourist season Sam operated the art gallery before the couple decided that a flooring centre was the way to go, providing the community with a fully-comprehensive service.

With the official opening of the flooring centre not until Monday, October 19, Andrew is pleased to have a booked-out schedule for three weeks already.

Andrew has 26 years in the flooring industry, and the centre will offer commercial and domestic flooring with carpet and vinyl materials.

Youth activities gain good support in Blackall Tambo

Some of the big group of young people who turned up for the Spotlight game during the school holidays

Blackall Tambo Regional Council Youth Sports and Recreation Officer Lisa Goodman last week travelled to Cairns for the Local Governments Association Queensland Youth Conference.

The three-day networking conference was attended by 45 youth officers from around the state to share ideas on how to best support the youth.

Stemming from the youth conference, Ms Goodman’s main goal was to hold youth activities

in Blackall and Tambo every week for the remainder of the year.

This idea is well underway, with events alternated between the two towns each week.

During the September school holidays, a series of events were held for young people including a messy games night, spotlight and a dive-in movie.

Ms Goodman said that she was pleased with attendance at the events with more than 65 people attending the dive-in movie and

more than 30 on both games nights.

“We’ve gone from having two or three kids show up to getting big crowds.”

“This is the start of something much bigger and better.”

Council CEO appointed LGMA President Fresh ideas pay off for Hospital Auxiliary

Blackall Tambo Regional Council CEO Ken Timms in Tambo with the President’s jacket

Record crowds enjoyed the Blackall Hospital Auxiliary’s annual Springtime Festival on Saturday night with 450 gate tickets sold and more than 500 people pouring through the gates.

With a new committee at the helm, the festival was moved from the hospital grounds in the daytime to an evening event in Banks Park. Auxiliary President Veronica Driver said that they could not believe the number of people that turned up to enjoy the revamped festival.

“It was absolutely packed – completely unexpected.”

“There really was an overwhelming show of community support and the atmosphere was fantastic.”

Many festival-goers said that the bold decision to move the festival could not have been a better one or more rewarded.

Organisers say that the fundraiser was hugely successful.

Money raised from the evening will go towards maintaining the

The group, whose first major project was the inground swimming pool, started in 1968 as the Nurses Amenities Fund.

With the theme of ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’, recycled materials were incorporated into every aspect of the festival including a kid’s recycled package with information about recycling, a badge and recycled post cards.

Scott Parry won first prize in the raffle taking home a 6 x 4 Easy Trailer containing many gardening essentials. Second prize went to Glen Kowald with two nights accommodation in Maleny. Clem Campbell won a $200 fuel card as third prize. The lucky gate prize went to Kevin Harlow with a family pass to the Qantas Founders Museum and a guided tour of the 747 and 707 planes.

The boys duck

picture colouring competition was won by Slater Spinks and second place awarded to Billy Banks. In the girls Rachael Whysall won first place, and Brodie Peacock took second. Kolbe Duke was the boy’s teddy bear picture winner, followed by Emerson Parry. The girl’s competition was won by Kaitlin Burton and runner-up Xenobia Martin. The boy’s recycle picture competition was won by Harry Timms, followed by Jesse Miller. Charley Brown won the girl’s competition, and Sophie Negus placed second. Amy Mc Namara was the winner of the recycle poster, with Shannon Thomson in second. The Springtime Festival Poster for 2010 was won by Andrew Davison, with Katie Baillie awarded second place. Taylor Hauff created the best poster made entirely from recyclable materials.

The Hospital Auxiliary are grateful to all volunteers who donated, supported and worked on the evening.
