International Skeletal SocietyLetter From the President

This has been a banner year for the International Skeletal Society. The Maui meeting was a wonderful success. Five hundred members and registrants came together at the beautiful Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, for education, camaraderie, networking, relaxation, tasty Mai Tais, and beautiful sunsets.

I would like to thank Drs. Michael Klein, Ted Miller, Andrew Grainger, Robert Campbell, Don Resnick and Miriam Bredella as well as their committees for their hard work. The Members’ Meeting and Annual Refresher Course were well-attended with excellent cases and presentations. We held the Scientific Poster sessions outside in the courtyard under the palms for a refreshing change of pace. The Ultrasound Course was fully-booked and staffed by the best in the business. You have no idea how hard it was to gather ultrasound machines for this purpose on Maui. Thanks to Jon Jacobson and Pam Murphy, our Executive Director, for their efforts. Dr. Alan Schiller, one of our Hawaii members, deserves thanks for his ability to get microscopes together for the meeting.

The Annual Meeting was well received with many fantastic presentations. Rapid fire presentations were a big hit. Of course, one of the highlights was the Film Panel, hosted by Dr. Don Resnick. The theme was major world events, and the Men’s team leader, Dr. Robert Boutin, hit them out of the ballpark with his knowledge of history and current events. Kate Stevens and her Women’s team won, of course! It seemed that everyone had a great time at the after hours events. The weather cooperated and all events were held outside overlooking the Pacific. The gala featured a world-class luau with great entertainment that included an unbelievable fire dancer. Please look at our website for pictures from the meeting.

What are the predictions for our next meeting in Paris? It should be on par or exceed the fantastic experience of the meeting we had in Paris 20 years ago. We will be at the Marriott Rive Gauche, which is in the 14th Arrondissement, a few metro stops away from Saint-Germain-des-Prés. The hotel and newly renovated state-of-the-art conference center are ideal for our group. It makes sense to stay at this hotel, an affordable four star modern property adjacent to the conference center. Drs. Julie Fanburg-Smith and Mark Murphey will take over the organization of the Members’ Meeting, to be held on Monday and Tuesday, September 5 – 6. Dr. Miriam Bredella will run the Scientific Session on Monday afternoon. Drs. Andrew Grainger and Henri Guerini will organize the Tuesday Ultrasound Course. Drs. Robert Campbell and Kim Amrami are spearheading the Electronic Exhibits Committee that will be reviewing and awarding e-poster submissions. Dr.

Christine Chung is planning the annual course with her committee that includes exciting additions to the scope and format. There will be a special rapid-fire session that includes members of the ISS who are also members of the French musculoskeletal imaging society, Societe d’Imagerie Musculo-Squelettique (SIMS). Current SIMS President and ISS member, Dr. Anne Cotten, is in charge of the local committee. She has done a fantastic job of obtaining corporate support for the meeting.

What else is going on in our Society? There is a feeling of energy and enthusiasm that seems contagious. As you will see from this newsletter, we are gaining new members from several disciplines who live in many parts of the world. Quite a few French and French-speaking members have joined. We are attracting younger members in the areas of radiology, pathology and orthopedics. Many pre-eminent musculoskeletal radiologists, young and old, are now joining. Drs. Soterios Gyftopolous and Naveen Subhas have organized a new member reception that made its debut in Maui and was very well-received. We plan to do that on an annual basis. The outreach program is flourishing

with members going all over the globe to represent ISS as we teach our trade. Thanks to Dr. Victor Cassar Pullicino for chairing that committee. We would like to be as inclusive of the membership as possible in this quest so please let Victor know if you have not done an outreach and would like to do one in the future.

We hope to institute a new program of education and grants. Dr. Juerg Hodler

is spearheading a committee to look into those possibilities. Dr. Martin Torriani, chair of the Ad Hoc Electronic Communication and Education Committee, is working on social media communication and new electronic teaching for our society. Please “like” our new Facebook page. We hope to have some lectures on our site soon and will try to tape the meeting in the future to be available for a period of time after the meeting for those who register.

The ISS is grateful to the editors of Skeletal Radiology for their hard work and able leadership to make the journal the success that it is. This includes Drs. Dan Rosenthal, Mark Kransdorf, and Gunnar Ästrom. We thank former Editor Juerg Hodler for his service and congratulate him on his new role as the secretary-elect of the ISS.

With that, I thank you for your continued support of ISS. It is an honor and a privilege to lead this society. Please don’t hesitate to contact me, or members of the Executive Committee, with any suggestions or comments. I look forward to seeing you in Paris.

ISS 42ND ANNUAL MEETING MAUI, HAWAII 2015The annual meeting of the Society was held this past year in beautiful Maui, Hawaii. As in previous years, the meeting was composed of the Members’ Meeting and subsequent Refresher Course. The refresher course had a total registration of 498 attendees. Dr. Ted Miller did an outstanding job coordinating the Refresher Course program including the introduction of new SAMs (Self Assessment Modules) CME credits.

Electronic Exhibits and Special Scientific Sessions were once again featured as integral components of the annual ISS Members’ Meeting. A true international representation of abstracts featuring cutting edge research was presented during these sessions by several budding musculoskeletal radiologists who will hopefully join ISS in the near future. CME credits for Scientific Sessions were offered to participating attendees in Maui.

The 2015 award for the best Scientific Paper Presentation of the Scientific Session was awarded to Dr. Jennifer Favinger from the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, for her work on “Long-Term Radiographic Follow-Up of Bisphosphonate-Related Femur Fractures.” The Founders medal was presented to Dr. Javier Beltran, our former President. Dr. Ute Heilmann, our

Skeletal Radiology/Springer liaison, received the Medal of the ISS. Dr. Hakan Ilasian from Cleveland was the winner of the President’s Medal this year.

SOCIETY CONVENTION PLANNING 2016 - 2017PARIS, FRANCE SEPTEMBER 3 - 9, 2016Active planning is ongoing for the 2016 Society meeting in Paris, France. It is anticipated that the Paris meeting will be a highly popular destination for ISS members and participation of French attendee registrants is being coordinated via Dr. Anne Cotten who is in charge of the local planning committee.

Members’ Meeting* September 5 – 6 (Monday and Tuesday)*Microscope and case review the preceding Saturday and Sunday

Refresher Course September 7 – 9 (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday). The refresher course promotion committee has been working diligently to entice a potential record number of non-member registrant attendees. The ISS has some wonderful social events planned for the evenings. Make sure that you sign up early for the Tuesday night Members’ Dinner to be held on the Onyx, one of the fleet of Bateaux Parisiens, where we’ll cruise down the Seine past major lit landmarks while feasting on a gourmet French dinner. The Friday night gala, which will take place right after Don Resnick’s Film Panel session, will be held at the beautiful Petit Palais near the Champs Élysées. Don’t forget to sign up for these events before they sell out.

Planning 2017 The society is actively working on future meeting sites. We will hold the 2017 meeting in New York City at the centrally located New York Hilton Midtown from August 28 – September 1, 2017. Plan to attend!

NEW SOCIETY INITIATIVES: Ad Hoc Electronic Communication and Education CommitteeThe new Ad Hoc Electronic Communication and Education Committee was formed to encompass functions of the previous ISS Website Committee while also promoting online electronic education initiatives for the Society. The committee has focused its recent efforts on continued updates and functionality improvements to the ISS website. The committee will also be working on enhancing Society online educational materials in musculoskeletal imaging and pathology, including consideration of providing access to select Annual Meeting lectures and live streaming of talks via the internet on the ISS website. The committee, under the direction of Dr. Martin Torriani, has also shepherded a new ISS Facebook page and Twitter account, which can be visited for updates regarding the Annual Meeting and regular postings of open access Skeletal Radiology articles.

Members interested in contributing to the committee activities are encouraged to contact Dr. Torriani. Stay tuned for future developments and activities of the committee in the months ahead!

Society Educational/Research GrantsUnder Dr. Steinbach’s direction, the Society Executive Committee is investigating a new program for the Society to sponsor educational and/or research grants. As a start to this process, Dr. Juerg Hodler has been asked to head an ad-hoc committee to investigate and define goals, framework and resources to dedicate to such a granting program. Proposals are planned to be discussed at the Paris meeting. Input regarding these programs is welcomed from all Society members in advance of the 2016 Society conference.

ISS OUTREACH PROGRAMThe Society outreach program once again had a successful year with programs coordinated in: New Delhi, Hyderabad, Riga, Nairobi/Mombasa, Ecuador, Hammamet, Vietnam, Fortaleza, and Moscow.

Multiple new global locations are being considered for outreach programs in 2016 and the years ahead. Potential initiatives include investigation of pathology outreach programs and involvement of new members of the Society as potential outreach program lecturers. Members with interests in this regard are encouraged to contact the Outreach Program Chair, Dr. Victor Pullicino.

SKELETAL RADIOLOGYThe official journal of the ISS, Skeletal Radiology, continues to thrive with an increasing number of paper submissions to the journal through 2015. In addition to being the official journal of the ISS, Skeletal Radiology has now become the official journal of both the Society of Skeletal Radiology (SSR) and the Astralasian Musculoskeletal Imaging Group (AMSIG), with goals of further increasing the visibility of the journal through affiliated societies. We applaud this effort and look forward to working more closely with those societies, and others in the years ahead.

After many years of dedicated work on behalf of the Society and the journal, Dr. Juerg Hodler stepped down as an editor of Skeletal Radiology allowing him to take on more responsibility as secretary-elect. Following an extensive search process, Dr. Gunnar Ästrom has agreed to serve as a new editor of the journal.

NEW NOMINATIONS SOCIETY EXECUTIVECongratulations are extended to the following individuals who were elected to the Society Executive Committee based on recommendations of the Nominating Committee: Secretary Elect Dr. Juerg Hodler, and Members-at-Large Drs. Meera Hameed, Mark J. Kransdorf, and Andreas Heuck. These new Members-at-Large will be replacing Drs. Andrew Grainger, Donna Blankenbaker and Carrie Inwards who we would all like to thank for their time and efforts serving on the Executive Committee on behalf of the Society membership.

These members supported the society during their lifetimes and each made his or her contribution to our profession. Although separated from us by death, they are fondly remembered by all of us.
