In May and June 2019, Mediation Services received settlement information regarding 64 bargaining relationships encompassing 26,605 employees. There were 33 private sector and 31 public sector settlements, covering 3,166 and 23,439 employees respectively. Highlights Calgary Board of Education The Calgary Board of Education and four of its unions / associations settled their collective agreements in May and June 2019. The bargaining units are comprised of approximately 6,100 maintenance, professional, and support staff employees. Arbitration Bill 9, the Public Sector Wage Arbitration Deferral Act came into force on June 28, 2019. The legislation defers wage arbitration negotiations for teachers, nurses, and government workers until October 31, 2019. Contracting out is the major outstanding issue. Bargaining Update is a monthly report that provides information about the unionized workforce, primarily in Alberta.

The settlement data reported in this issue of Bargaining Update is based on the collective agreement settlement information received by Mediation Services in May and June 2019. In May and June 2019, Mediation Services received settlement information regarding 64 bargaining relationships encompassing 26,605 employees. There were 33 private sector and 31 public sector settlements, covering 3,166 and 23,439 employees respectively.

Highlights

Calgary Board of Education The Calgary Board of Education and four of its unions / associations settled their collective agreements in May and June 2019. The bargaining units are comprised of approximately 6,100 maintenance, professional, and support staff employees.

Arbitration Bill 9, the Public Sector Wage Arbitration Deferral Act came into force on June 28, 2019. The legislation defers wage arbitration negotiations for teachers, nurses, and government workers until October 31, 2019.

Wood Buffalo Housing & Development On May 10, 2019 forty-three employees represented by CUPE Local 1505 were locked out by Wood Buffalo Housing & Development. Contracting out is the major outstanding issue.

Agreements Ratified To date, 138 agreements were ratified between January 2019 and June 2019. 86 settlements affecting 22,520 employees were negotiated. 51 settlements affecting 26,148 employees were settled through the mediation process. And one settlement affecting 449 employees was settled through voluntary arbitration. Ratified agreements included:
