It was a great opportunity for the P&C representatives and myself to advise of the financial position the uniform shop is currently in, which then has a flow on effect to the school and uniform expectations. In short the message that I can give you is that there is an indefinite date for the change of uniform. A combined letter, from both myself and the P&C will be forwarded to all families next week outlining the financial position, stock, future orders and Kindergarten 2020 student uniforms, so parents are well-informed and able to understand the decisions made. Students Arriving Early to School There are a number of students who are arriving at school very early in the morning and left unsupervised by the parents. Students should not arrive at school prior to 8:45am as teachers are not on duty until this time. Staff who are onsite prior to this time are preparing lessons or involved in planning meetings. It would be appreciated if parents make alternate arrangements with local before and after school care services if they have work commitments. School Counsellor School counsellors work with students of all ages and their families, providing valuable individual or small group support, counselling and psychological assessment for students with specific needs. Their daily work activities may include counselling students, assessing students’ learning and behaviour, helping families make informed decisions about their child’s education, identifying adjustments to support students’ learning and liaising with external agencies regarding students’ wellbeing. Mrs Sathiah and Mrs Buglass are our school counsellors and between them they work 5 days a fortnight, doing an outstanding job, however, at this time of year have a very busy schedule supporting families applying for support class placements and transitioning to high school. The counsellor caseload is determined in consultation with the Learning Support Team and the Principal according to need. School Counsellors focus on identifying need and often refer onto more specialised services for intensive follow- up and support. If you have concerns in relation to your child please contact your child’s class teacher or stage leader to discuss a Learning Support Team or School Counsellor referral. SASS Recognition Week This week is SASS recognition week. Our School Administrative and Support Staff work tirelessly across the school in the office, library, classrooms and school grounds. They work to provide a quality school environment that also supports teachers in providing quality learning experiences and care for our students. On behalf of the school community I wish to thank Mrs Hatton, Mrs Ratcliffe, Mrs Newton, Mr Little, Mr Paul, Mrs Timbs and Mrs Skapetis for all the work they do four our school. Dear Parents and Carers,

UniformI’d like to thank those community members that were able to take the time to attend the information sessions that were held last week abut our school uniform.

Students Arriving Early to School

There are a number of students who are arriving at school very early in the morning and left unsupervised by the parents. Students should not arrive at school prior to 8:45am as teachers are not on duty until this time. Staff who are onsite prior to this time are preparing lessons or involved in planning meetings. It would be appreciated if parents make alternate arrangements with local before and after school care services if they have work commitments.

STAGE 1 WOLLONGONG BOTANIC GARDENS EXCURSION

Last Wednesday, saw 82 extremely excited Stage 1 students and 5 teachers board the bus and wave their mum/dad/carer goodbye as they ventured down the coast to the ‘Wollongong Botanic Gardens’...The excitement on their faces as they saw the blue scenery (coastline) heading down Mt Ousley was priceless!!!!!

The beautiful weather coupled with a fantastic program led by the Educational staff in the gardens kept our kids busy and most of all engaged the entire time!!! Students experienced sessions around the importance of composting, the world of worms (and looking at the structure of a worm farm), planting an Australian native seed (which they got to take home), learning about bush medicine (working in nicely with NAIDOC week) and discovering/learning about our cross pollinators - BEES and the incredible role they play amongst the natural environment.

What a great day!!! The staff at the gardens had nothing but praise on how well our students listened and behaved on the day. Congratulations to all boys and girls….Read some interesting informative pieces of writing from our students below...amazing facts…and an honest reflection of this amazing excursion.

Mrs Smart

One thing I learnt on my excursion was that Aboriginals used trees for things.

They used them for keeping kids safe, diarrhea, sore tummys, headaches, constipation, bruises, swollen arms and black eyes.

Wollongong Botanic GardensAboriginal medicine. I learnt that if Aboriginals hurt themselves and their skin is bleeding they will look for an Ironbark tree. They use the bark that has fallen off and put it in hot water until it is hot enough, then they put it on their sore. They wrap with a type of long grass. We also learnt about the worm farm.I want to go back because I want to touch the worms in the worm farm!!!!The part I really enjoyed the most was collecting pollen because we got to make monster flowers. It was so much fun!Oliver

The best part of the excursion was when we had to make coloured groups. The group had a leader. My leader was Matilda. Each group had a coloured counter. My groups colour was blue. Our team came first but we did not win anything. I learnt that bark can help your hands if your hands are sore.I want to go back because I love the flowers and I want to show my family all the things we learnt.Helaina

Yesterday I went on an excursion to Wollongong Botanic Gardens. This is what I did there.I planted a seed in the first area. It was so much fun!The second thing we did was look at different trees. There was a tree called the Iron Bark. The bark was used as a bandage for Aboriginal people. The part I Enjoyed the most was using a paint brush to collect pollen as well as finding coloured counters in our groups/ my leader was Matilda. We looked at lots of bees to!!!It was an awesome excursion. I want to go back again!Amelia

My trip to Wollongong Botanic GardensThe part I enjoyed the most was when we collected pollen with paint brushes. With the pollen we collected we made a monster flower – this is where pollen from a flower is placed on a different flower.I learnt that worms lay eggs and eat demin, and that trees help Aboriginal people.I would like to go back because it will be fin to show my mum and dad because they have not been there before.Tynan

Wollongong Botanic GardensThe part I enjoyed the most was collecting coloured counters in our groups. We were actually pretending to be bees!!We also looked at the bees flying around in the tall trees. There were heaps! I learnt that there are trees that can help when you are sick. There is a tree called the she Oak that Aboriginal children must wait under if they are lost, so their parents can find them easily.I want to go back because I love looking at all of the flowers and I want to show my family.Charlotte

During mathematics lessons, KA have been learning about area. They have been predicting whether a surface will be larger or smaller than another surface. KA have also been explaining their reasons for this prediction. They all tried to see if anyone had a bigger hand than Mrs Stadler.

We in 3-6W enjoy caring for our chickens. Thanks to a wonderful, supportive community we now care for 7 hens. We collect all the food scraps after lunch each day and work out the fraction of the bucket that is filled. So far, we have learned what ¼, ½ and ¾ looks like and thanks to Mrs Timbs we have visuals to help us. This is assisting us to learn how to add fractions as we work out the total food waste at the end of each week. We clean out the hen house and provide clean drinking water. Thanks to our community we have lawn mower catchers that the hens lay their eggs in. We fill these catchers with strips of newspaper to make it more comfortable for our friends. The eggs we collect we give to Michelle in the canteen to turn into yummy food. We love our hens very much and enjoy cuddling them and

taking good care of them every

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) At Bargo Public School PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) is a school wide behaviour initiative. We deliver weekly Social Skills lessons (Monday afternoons) as a part of ‘You Can Do It’ program that supports our PBL whole school initiative.

A positive school environment, where all students are included and feel safe and supported improves student learning. Behaviour issues are viewed as an opportunity to learn and develop.

Students at Bargo Public School are making great choices on the playground. We are learning all the time how to best treat ourselves and others. When we make a mistake, we realise that this is an opportunity for learning to take place. We can reflect on our behaviour and the choices we make. We can think of other choices that we could make in the future. We realise that there are consequences for our choices. We are looking to make the best choices for ourselves and others in our school.

PBL Focus: Right Place, Right Time. By 3/4C

Being in the right place at the right time is an expectation (rule) at Bargo PS. This is important because we like everyone at Bargo to be safe. We are safe, respectful learners. We know where we are supposed to be. We know that rules are made to keep us safe. If we cannot see a teacher, they cannot see us. We are in the wrong place. This is called ‘Out of Bounds’ and means we are in a place we are not supposed to go OR it is the wrong time to be there. We could be injured or hurt and no one would know to send for help. We don’t want anyone to be hurt, especially our friends. We can encourage our friends to make good choices. It is good to be in the right place, at the right time.

We should only go to classes with teacher supervision at the right times. We know which equipment we can play on. Older students set the example and help us learn how to behave.

Under the COLA is the right place if you do not have a hat at lunch or recess.

Am I in the right place at the right time at home and in our local community? Am I being safe? Does someone know where I am?

You Can Do It Focus: Wellbeing: Resilience and Happiness

Resilience is being able to bounce back from stress, challenge, tragedy, trauma or adversity. When children are resilient, they are braver, more curious, more adaptable, and more able to extend their reach into the world. The great news is that resilience is something that can be nurtured in all children.

Happiness is a feeling of pleasure and positivity. When someone feels good, proud, relieved or satisfied about something, that person is said to be “happy”.

What makes you happy? Are there particular people or situations in your life that make you happier than others? Have you thanked the people in your life who make you feel happy? Are you taking every opportunity to bring happiness to other people’s lives?

Congratulations to the Classes with most playground tokens for this fortnight:
