Goal Setting

At Baringa State Primary School, studentsfrom Prep to Year 6 use learning goals tofocus their energies on improvement incertain areas. Educators too, have learninggoals related to developing further expertisein educational areas that benefit ourstudents. Many adults will likewise be

familiar with the value of goal setting.

An essential component of goal setting is the acknowledgmentof improvement, even though the original goal may not havebeen met….yet.

A term often used to describe goals that satisfy certain keycriteria, thereby ensuring goals are purposeful, is SMARTGoals.

What is a SMART Goal?

SMART is an acronym that you can use to guide your goalsetting.

To make sure goals are clear and reachable, each one shouldbe:

1. Specific

Your goal should be clear and specific, otherwise you won't beable to focus your efforts or feel truly motivated to achieve it.When drafting your goal, try to answer the five "W" questions:

2. Measurable

It's important to have measurable goals, so that you can trackyour progress and stay motivated. Assessing progress helpsyou to stay focused, meet your deadlines, and feel theexcitement of getting closer to achieving your goal.

• Specific (simple, sensible, significant).

• Measurable (meaningful, motivating).

• Achievable (agreed, attainable).

• Relevant (reasonable, realistic and resourced,results-based).

• Time bound (time-based, time limited, time/costlimited, timely, time-sensitive).

• What do I want to accomplish?

• Why is this goal important?

• Who is involved?

• Where is it located?

• Which resources or limits are involved?

A measurable goal should address questions such as:

3. Achievable

Your goal also needs to be realistic and attainable to besuccessful. In other words, it should stretch your abilities butstill remain possible. When you set an achievable goal, youmay be able to identify previously overlooked opportunities orresources that can bring you closer to it.

An achievable goal will usually answer questions such as:

4. Relevant

This step is about ensuring that your goal matters to you, andthat it also aligns with other relevant goals. We all need supportand assistance in achieving our goals, but it's important toretain control over them. So, make sure that your plans driveeveryone forward, but that you're still responsible for achievingyour own goal.

A relevant goal can answer "yes" to these questions:

5. Time-bound

Every goal needs a target date, so that you have a deadlineto focus on and something to work toward. This part of theSMART goal criteria helps to prevent everyday tasks fromtaking priority over your longer-term goals.

A time-bound goal will usually answer these questions:
