Barium Enema
What is Barium Enema? Is an x-ray examination of the colon .
When the lower gastrointestinal tract is filled with barium, the radiologist is able to view and assess the anatomy and function.
Indications of Barium Enema
A physician may order a lower GI examination to detect:-benign tumors (such as polyps).
-cancer.-ulcerative colitis (inflammatory bowel disease).
-Hirschsprung disease in children.-Diagnose IBD
The procedure is frequently performed to help diagnose symptoms such as:
-chronic diarrhea.-blood in stools.
-constipation.-irritable bowel syndrome.
-unexplained weight loss.-a change in bowel habits.
-suspected blood loss.-abdominal pain.
Contraindication
1-Pregnancy .2-Allergy to iodinated
contracted materia .
Disadvantages
1-Distention of the colon is uncomfortable .
2-only a few patients find it very painful .
3-Any X-ray test procedure involves some risk of radiation exposure .
4-conctipation after the procedure. 5-Complications of Abases or
Peritonitis.
How does the patient prepare for a barium enema?
1-Empty the colon By : eliminate as much fecal material from the colon and rectum as is possible , Fasting and use laxative.
2-remove jewelry, removable dental appliances, eye glasses and any metal objects or clothing that might interfere with the x-ray images.
