Building a NewLife in IsraelBeit Canada Barnea Absorption Center

The Beit Canada Barnea Absorption Center is home to more than 440 new immigrants from Ethiopia. It is one of many Jewish Agency absorption centers throughout the country that help Israel’s newest citizens realize their dream of becoming part of the Jewish state.

Residents participate in intensive Hebrew ulpan classes, cultural and social activities, empowerment workshops and employment retraining programs. The Center’s dedicated staff supports immigrants through every step of the absorption process, helping them to find new homes, secure employment and enroll their children in school. Those in need also receive medical care and counseling.

The unique Yesodot/Foundations enrichment program gives children and teens immediate, targeted support for their new life in Israel. The multi-level, multi-age program builds their self-esteem,

prepares them for a lifetime of learning and addresses their social, emotional and scholastic needs. The program includes Jewish holiday celebrations, a learning center, after school tutoring ,computer education, bar and bat mitzvah ceremonies at the Western Wall and a Big Brother and Sister program.

Beit Canada Barnea is located in Ashkelon, a southern city terrorized by the constant threat of Kassam rocket fire. Since the beginning of the Second Intifada in 2000 and throughout the Gaza War, the city has suffered brutal rocket attacks which have inflicted serious physical and emotional damage. A new program was introduced at the Absorption Center to provide adults and children with special workshops that use drama and puppet therapy, bibliotherapy, yoga and relaxation techniques to help them cope with the ongoing trauma resulting from these terrifying attacks.
