InclusionBarnfield Vale Academy is committed to providing an appropriate and high quality education to all. We believe that every child matters and all pupils have a common entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum, integrated into all aspects of academy life. We ensure that pupils of all abilities have the opportunity to flourish.
The Sub The ‘Sub’ (Support Block) is a dedicated separate building where pupils receive appropriate support and advice from fully trained and qualified staff.
Cognition and Learning Barnfield Vale has a large learning support team who work to support children with Special Educational Needs both in and out of the classroom and the Sub has a room dedicated to providing 1:1 or small group support away from their usual class environment. This room is fully resourced with the latest technology to support pupils’ needs.
Behaviour The Sub is also able to provide support for those children whose behaviour has been deemed as unacceptable. To ensure that pupils are able to remain focussed and continue to learn it is sometimes necessary to withdraw the child from his/her peers for a set period of time. A number of isolated work stations are set up and appropriate work and support is provided by staff. Social and Emotional Support A further room in the Sub is dedicated to nurture support and general tlc
(tender loving care!) for our pupils. There are a huge range of emotions experienced by our children in and out of the Academy, all of which have an impact on their mental well-being and the quality and their ability to learn. Staff are able to guide children through situations that are emotionally challenging and help to equip them with skills to enable them to cope better when the difficult times come along. They aim to make children’s time in the Academy more enjoyable and improve their learning. There are also many clubs available at lunchtimes including ‘social club’ which is the perfect place to make new friends.The Sub has the resources to provide breakfast for pupils who might benefit from nurture time before going into class in the morning. Sometimes pupils will visit this room as a reward for hard work or achieving targets e.g. class pupil of the week. On these occasions they might be provided with a hot chocolate and a biscuit.

Gifted and Talented We use a range of strategies to identify more able and very able children. The provision for Gifted and Talented pupils is the responsibility of every class teacher and their plans identify how pupils’ needs will be met. In addition to normal lessons the Academy will also seek to provide extra-curriculum and learning experiences when possible including:• A range of extra-curricular activities
to develop their particular talents, e.g. sport, music, art.
• Access to centrally provided activities e.g. Children’s University
• Specially organised visitors & trips• Competition opportunities• Enrichment activity opportunities
English as an Additional Language Many pupils in our Academy are literate to varying degrees, in a language, other than English. These children may have different levels of English, ranging from initial learners to those functioning at a higher level of literacy skills. Pupils with English as an Additional Language, are identified when they join our Academy and an initial assessment will be carried out to measure the pupil’s current level of language to enabling us to ensure that appropriate support is provided.

UniformWe are very proud of our Academy uniform. Our children feel comfortable in both academic lessons as well more physical classes where an alternative kit is required. We expect our children to dress in full uniform at all times and find that by feeling smart, inclusive and prepared for lessons they perform better and take pride in representing our Academy. Further details on where to purchase all items of the Academy uniform and branded goods can be obtained from Reception or on our website.
Early Years Foundation StageThe Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum will be a topic based, creative curriculum covering a number of key areas:
• Literacy Development involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters and to begin to learn to read and write. Children are given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems, and other written materials) to ignite their interest. We also include specific phonics, reading, writing, spelling and handwriting sessions, re-enforcing and placing a high importance on basic skills.
• Mathematics involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces, and measures.
•Communication and Language Development involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations.
• Physical Development involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive; and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. Children
must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and be encouraged to make healthy food choices.
•Understanding the World involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.
• Expressive Art and Design involves enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, and design and technology.

These are only the trips/visits that incur a cost, all other visits will remain free of charge, unless something unexpected or exciting happens providing too good an opportunity to miss!There is an obvious cost to such trips/visits which the school cannot afford to pay, especially when using a coach to transport the children. Teaching & Learning - Years 1-8EnglishThe prime aim of the teaching of English at Barnfield Vale is that all students progress and develop confidence in their reading, writing, speaking and listening. Exciting and enthusing the students with a love of reading, story-telling, poetry and drama is our objective and in order to assist in achieving this, writers, story-tellers and theatre companies are brought into school and external trips arranged where appropriate.
Mathematics Our aim is to help all children to be confident in their use of mathematics in their daily life. We do this by teaching children a range of strategies, both mental and written; how to use calculators and ICT to solve problems; and by showing them the relevance of mathematic skills to other subjects and to the real world.
HistoryWe provide opportunities for children to investigate and learn about the past using a variety of sources and information. We develop a knowledge and understanding of British, European and Non-European history.Residential and day visits are an important aspect of this subject and we hope that parents will be able to support them.
GeographyWe expand the students’ knowledge and understanding of place at a local, national and world scale. A development of a sense of identity through the understanding of the home community and the U.K., together with a respect of and empathy with other cultures and communities, is an integral aim.
ScienceScience stimulates students and evokes curiosity about the phenomena and events in the world around them. At Barnfield Vale we have an emphasis on practical experimental work and offer opportunities for:•Developing the knowledge and
understanding of important scientific ideas, processes and skills relating them to everyday experiences;
• Learning ways of thinking and communicating ideas;
• Exploring values and attitudes to Science.
Art & Design Art & Design as a subject offers a valuable personal creative experience for children of all abilities.With art, children have experience of using a variety of materials creatively. Having grown up in an era of increasingly sophisticated visual artistic performance within popular cultures, art lessons offer a bridge between the humanities and technology; from using kilns in pottery to computer generated art and design.
Design & TechnologyThe purpose of Design & Technology is to enable students to be inventive in formulating solutions to problems and so bring about change to existing conditions.Students work both in groups and individually on a variety of themes, using a range of materials. They learn basic skills in Food, Textiles, Wood and Electronics.

Modern Foreign LanguagesLanguages are taught to all students at Barnfield Vale. Equal emphasis is placed on speaking and understanding the language as well as reading and writing.
MusicStudents are taught the three main strands of Composing, Performing and Listening/ Appraising. Through a wide variety of both Western and World music, we explore the way that music is constructed and how it can be used to create feelings and moods. In addition to curricular music, Barnfield Vale offers a wide range of lunchtime and after-school instrument lessons and groups which students are encouraged to take part in.
Religious Education (RE)We teach our students to understand and reflectonthebeliefsofthemainreligionsof the world and we encourage them to respect these beliefs and the feelings of other people. Visits to places of worship and visitors of different religions enhance this knowledge and understanding.We encourage all students to be involved in RE but should parents have any concerns, these can be discussed with the Principal.
Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE)All aspects of school life contribute to the personal and social development of students. Each class has a form tutor who really gets to know each of their students and is responsible for the students’ well-being. PSHCE is taught through Life Skills in mixed ability classes. Students consider personal well being which helps them to embrace change, feel positive about who they are and enjoy healthy, safe, responsible and fulfilled lives.
Physical Education (PE)Students participate in 3 lessons of PE per week. There is also an opportunity for students to take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities and represent the school in external fixtures against other schools.The aim of the Physical Education Department is to enthuse students to demonstrate to them the benefits that PE has to offer. At Barnfield Vale Academy our Year 5 children participate in swimming lessons.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT)We have three fully networked, internet connected computer suites, each equipped with new computers. All children have their own workspace where their work is stored. There is strict control on what children are able to view on the internet and parental agreement is required for the children to access the internet.ICT is a key part of most lessons where interactive white boards, video, sound and the internet all feature.

These are only the trips/visits that incur a cost, all other visits will remain free of charge, unless something unexpected or exciting happens providing too good an opportunity to miss!There is an obvious cost to such trips/visits which the school cannot afford to pay, especially when using a coach to transport the children. A range of clubs and activities have been put in place for the children to enjoy. These are the clubs that are already organised for the new academic year, however, further opportunities may be available. We reserve the right to change these, should it be necessary. Those likely to have associated costs have been printed in italics. All costs will be kept to a minimum, however, where specific resources or equipment are required e.g. cookery – a small cost will be applied to cover e.g. the purchase of ingredients. The majority of clubs will be operated by staff, however, where external providers are brought in, a cost will be incurred for parents.

Year 5 Enrichment/ Day TripsBelow you will find the trips and visits planned for your child over the next academic year. These are only the trips/visits that incur a cost, all other visits will remain free of charge, unless something unexpected or exciting happens providing too good an opportunity to miss!There is an obvious cost to such trips/visits which the school cannot afford to pay, especially when using a coach to transport the children. Wherever possible, the school mini-buses will be used which will incur a cost of £1 per child to help pay towards the fuel and running costs.
