PRINCIPAL REPORT
Welcome back to school everyone! I hope you all had a
relaxing and fun holiday!
I look forward to a productive and happy term ensuring that all
our students achieve their very best in all areas of their learning
as well as being happy and safe at school.
Staff Development Day
Our Staff Development Day was spent focusing on staff
professional learning and preparation for the busy term ahead.
Staff focussed on compliance training, Assessment and
Reporting, Learning Support for students and data driven
programming in the area of Literacy, specifically Reading and
Writing. Our teachers are extremely committed, passionate and
dedicated. They strive to do their very best for the students at all
times. It is an absolute pleasure to work alongside them all. Our
Staff Development Day was a productive, extremely positive and
student-focused day.
ANZAC Day
I had the very great honour and privilege of attending the ANZAC
Day dawn service at Riverstone cenotaph during the school
holidays. I sincerely thank all students, staff and parents who
attended with me and represented our school so beautifully. I felt
extremely proud. On Wednesday 2nd
May, our school had a
special ANZAC assembly organised by one of our teachers, Ms
Sarah Guy. Ms Guy did an absolutely wonderful job, this
assembly was one of the most beautiful and moving assemblies I
have ever attended. I have to admit that I fought back tears
during the assembly when our students very gently placed their
flowers in memory of all those who had died or suffered as a
result of war. Our choir sang beautifully and the behaviour of all
our students was absolutely outstanding, respectful and
considerate throughout the entire assembly. Heartfelt thanks to
our special guests, Lieutenant Lachlan Cairns and Greg Englert
who made the assembly especially meaningful for our students.
Cross Country Carnival
Many thanks to Mel Hayhow and her amazing team of teachers
who organised a wonderful Cross Country carnival. Our students
were fantastic, showing excellent behaviour and exemplary
sportsmanship at all times. I was fortunate to be able to attend for
part of the day and was very impressed by students and staff.
The event was well attended by parents who were really positive
and supportive of all our competitors. What a superb day!!

Mother’s Day
Many thanks to our wonderful P&C for organising the Mother’s
Day Stall and Mother’s Day Morning Tea. Our P&C parents
continually go over and above to support our students and our
school community. They are superstars!!
NAPLAN
Next week our year 3 and year 5 students will be completing NAPLAN. We ask all parents to assist this process by encouraging their child to do their very best without causing them to feel pressure to perform as this can result in extreme anxiety and stress. Please ensure that your child arrives at school on time after a good sleep and a healthy breakfast. Ensure that your child has a healthy lunch and healthy snacks each day. This is great advice, generally for all students every day of the year!! It is helpful to acknowledge that your child may be worried or anxious. NAPLAN provides an opportunity to help students build resilience to anxiety through teaching them some relaxation techniques such as deep, controlled breathing, relaxing the shoulders and keeping thoughts calm and positive. In every newsletter, I like to include some information that
may be of interest to parents and carers.
THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP Getting a good night's sleep often comes down to routines.
Avoiding late-night technology use and keeping a regular
sleep schedule are two important techniques as children
head back to school. Recent studies found that adolescents
used multiple forms of technology late into the night,
including gaming systems, cell phones, and computers. As a
result, they had difficulty staying awake and alert throughout
the day.
Any factor that decreases the quality or quantity of sleep will lead
to difficulty with school performance and poor behaviour
problems. When children stay up late at night texting in bed or
playing computer games, they are increasing their risk for neuro-
cognitive problems.
According to research, having a regular bedtime was the most
consistent predictor of positive developmental outcomes in four-
year olds. In this 8,000-person sample, language, reading and

maths scores were higher in children whose parents reported
enforcing regular bedtimes.
Disrupting the normal sleep pattern, whether with
technology or not, can reset the brain's circadian clock. A
common problem, staying awake late and sleeping-in on the
weekends, can make it difficult to fall asleep and wake-up
during the week, so it is important to maintain a consistent
schedule all week long.
The number of nightly sleep hours required by children varies by
age. In general, five-year olds should get 11 hours of sleep,
nine-year olds need 10 hours and 14-year olds require at
least 9 hours. If the child is not alert and functioning properly
during the day, sleep length should be gradually increased or
decreased, or the bedtime routine should be adjusted.
For better sleep, it is important to maintain a routine bedtime
pattern to prepare the brain for sleep.
Exciting, high-energy activity should be avoided within one hour
before lights-out.
Pre-bedtime activities like taking a bath, teeth-brushing, and
reading a non-stimulating book will signal to the brain that it's time
to sleep. Exercise, caffeine, and sugary foods should be avoided.
The ideal sleeping atmosphere is a dark, quiet room that is kept
below 20C. Technology should be removed from the bedroom.
Insufficient sleep and poor sleep habits have been linked to
health problems such as obesity, cardiovascular disease,
diabetes, depression, moodiness, irritability, reduced memory
functioning, and delayed reaction time.

Have a great fortnight, everyone!

ANZAC Care Packages
We would like to say thank you to the
Barnier Public School community for your
support with the ANZAC Care packages.
We were overwhelmed with donations and
exceeded the amount of boxes with a total of
57 boxes being sent to Australian service men
and women who are serving all around the
world. Also a special thank you to the families
who came along to pack the boxes. We are
sure that these boxes will be well loved and
enjoyed.
Mrs Bird, Mrs Ristic and Miss Guy.
ANZAC Service at Barnier
On Wednesday 2nd May 2018 , Barnier Public
School commemorated ANZAC Day with a whole
school ceremony.
We were lucky enough to have Lieutenant
Lachlan Cairns who is a current serving member
of the Royal Australian Navy attend for the
ceremony. Lieutenant Cairns visited many
classrooms during the day and explained what a
day in the Navy is like. He also answered many
interesting questions from the students.
The choir sang a beautiful rendition of ‘Lest we
Forget’, this brought tears to many eyes. The
student leaders ran the ceremony in a respectful
manner, which reflected the school values.
Thank you to the class representatives who laid
flowers as a sign of respect and remembrance.
Thank you to, Samuel P, Evelyn S, Emily G,
Sienna H, Sadhula W and Akane P who spoke
about what ANZAC Day means to them.
It was great to see so many parents and family
members attend the ceremony.

ANZAC Service at Riverstone-Schofields RSL Sub-branch
On Wednesday 25th of April, the school leaders
McKenzie V, Samuel P, Abby S, Dominic H
and Kodi E attended the ANZAC Day Dawn
Service at Riverstone. We met when it was
early and still dark. As we marched down the
road the school leaders carried the school
banner with Mrs Hollis. As the service and
commemorations continued McKenzie the
President and Samuel our Vice President
carried and laid the wreath on behalf of the
Barnier Public School. It was a quiet and
respectful service, and an honour for us to be
able to attend.
Barnier Student Leaders
Stage 1 Excursion - Australiana Pioneer Village In Term 1, Stage 1 students attended the
Australiana Pioneer Village. It was an
absolutely wonderful day out and the weather
was wonderful too. The students took a trip
into the past to learn how people dressed,
learnt, travelled and lived. Some of the
highlights of the day included the horse and
cart ride, making butter and walking into a
classroom from the past. The teachers would
like to congratulate all students on their safety
and beautiful manners on the excursion. A big
thank you to Mrs McCarthy for organising such
a great day.
NAPLAN (Year 3 and Year 5)
During Week 3 and Week 4 all students in Year 3 and Year 5 will
be completing NAPLAN tests in Writing, Reading, Language
Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and
Mathematics. Our school will be completing NAPLAN online this
year (with the exception of Year 3 writing) with all school Australia
wide moving towards online testing by 2020.

Stage 2 Excursion - Muru Mittigar
Stage 2 had a great time last term
exploring Aboriginal culture at the Muru
Mittigar Aboriginal Cultural and Education
Centre.
Across the day, students rotated between
different activities. During the first
rotation, students learnt about Aboriginal
artworks and created one of their own,
using ochre paint and traditional symbols.
In another rotation, students were taught
about many different tools, weapons and
instruments and the purpose of each. In
the last rotation, students had the
opportunity to practice throwing a
boomerang and understand how various
plants were important as a food source
and medicine.
Cross Country
Our yearly Cross Country Carnival was
held on Thursday 3rd
of May at
Paterson Reserve. The day was warm
and sunny which meant perfect
conditions for the event. All students
were eager to try their best and the
house spirit and atmosphere was
uplifting. It was especially encouraging
to watch the kindergartens at their first
carnival running around with big
smiles. A big thank you to all parents,
grandparents, carers, teachers and
students for making the day such an
incredible event. Good luck to those
students who made the Zone Carnival
which will be held on Wednesday 30th
of May.
