    the team(Barnsley Acoustic Roots Festival!)

We have established our own website and we would encourage everyone reading this to subscribe to our newsletter, so that you can be kept informed of future events:www.barnsleyacoustic.co.uk

All of the company: Carol, Hedley, Charlie and Stephen, give their time voluntarily, but we do ac-knowledge the help given by oth-ers and would like to thank those from Barnsley Council, The Civic, Kingstone School, University Cam-pus Barnsley and any other indi-viduals who have shown that they want to see Barnsley back on the festival circuit.

Our final thanks go to Arts Council England, who are supporting the festival through the Lottery Funded programme Grants for the Arts.

Up until the 80s, Barnsley hosted an annual folk festival at The Civic Hall. Famous acts regularly visited, but closure of the Hall and reduced finances ended the tradition.

The re-opening of The Civic in 2009 led to interest in a Folk Festival from a number of individuals and 2010 saw the re-launch of the Barnsley Folk Festival.

BARF took off in March 2010, with a night at The Civic, followed by two days at Kingstone School. Since then, BARF has been established as a company, laying the founda-tions for other festivals.

Building on the success of last years festival, we are pleased to announce a weekend of outstand-ing music with artists from America joining the best from the British Isles.

We are pleased this year that Gan-dalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams will be joining us. Along with fellow travellers, Larkin Poe, Stephanie Lambring and Lit-tle Miss Higgins and the UKs Show of Hands. Other headline acts in-clude Karine Polwart, Vin Garbutt and Cara Dillon.

  • Day 1 The Civic Hall

    7.30pm - 10.00pm

Show of Hands have been widely acknowledged as one of the finest acoustic roots duos in England.

Theyve been together since 1991, and since then, have widely ruled the folk scene.

Steve Knightley writes most of the bands fantastic material, and Phil Beer is the dazzling multi instrumen-talist.

The duo have built up an enour-mous following, seeing them sell out at the Royal Albert Hall three times, headline major festivals from Glastonbury to WOMAD and tour all over the world, from Europe to America, Australia to India.

Show of Hands were also voted Best Live Act by the public at the 2004 Folk Awards and at the 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Steve and Phil received a prestigious double accolade when they were named Best Duo and also clinched the Best Original Song award for Steves punchy Arro-gance Ignorance and Greed title track.

Since the 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Arrogance, Ignorance and Greed has gone on to be one of the most acclaimed songs in the Show of Hands repertoire.

As a band, Show of Hands is not just about folk music, but they blend a beautiful and creative mix of rock, roots, blues, country and trad, and often their songs are inspired by the music of other countries.

Their work is played on an array of instruments from slide guitar to fid-dle, mandolin to South American cuatro.

    5

Support for Show of Hands will be provided by Phillip Henry and Han-nah Marin, a Devon based duo with a captivating blues and folk sound.

Formed in Sleepy Hollow, New York in the late 90s, Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams is one of the best known and loved bands in their home state, singled out as Hudson Valley Magazines Band of the Year for three con-secutive years.

The band cites influences as di-verse as Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, Daivd Bowie, The Incredible String Band and early Pink Floyd.

On stage, Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams like to create an enchanting atmos-phere, using traditional folk instru-ments, tasty electric guitar and the distinctive singing and songwriting of Joziah Longo.

Longo describes the bands music as punk-classical-hillbilly-Floyd, a mental rollercoaster of whimsical and thought-provoking songs.

The Circus think that their live shows are where the real magic comes down, earning them critical ac-claim as well as a fiercly loyal following.

Stephanie LambringStephanie Lambring plays the acoustic guitar and her songs are a self-penned collection, written as the overlooked fat girl at the back of class, easily abandoned by her one-night stand boyfriends, she skewers the reality of teenage rela-tionships as acutely and painfully as Janis Ian did years ago.

He became a singer and guitar player, touring the world and making solo records. Born in Northern Ireland and raised by a musical family in an area steeped in Irish traditional music, Cara showed great vocal abil-ity from an early age, winning the All Ireland Singing Trophy at age 14. She went on to sing with Oige, De Dannan and joined folk group Equation in 1995.

Her self-titled first album was met with popular acclaim. The combi-nation of Caras expressive vocals and Lakemans lyrical piano work gave ancient material new life

Caras second album, Sweet Lib-erty, proved to be as intimate as the first. It used a wide range of instrumental textures and includ-ed five original Dillon/Lakeman songs which allowed Cara to show poignancy and depth in her vocal ability.

Caras husband Sam produced her first three albums and her third gave her the most successful radio hit of her career, Never In A Million Years, which featured on the BBC Radio 2 playlist.

Caras talent has been described as incredibly rare. Her gen-tle charm and natural personal-ity combined with a gift to retell a great story through song has helped her to defy borders, cul-tures and even languages. She is an emotive and captivating performer.

They are sisters, music lovers and foremost storytellers. Ever since they were little, Larkin Poe have been awed by the power of a good story teller. They would hound their parents for stories and once they learned to read themselves, they would hound the bookshelves. A decade later, theyre still search-ing for stories and strive to tell them well. Named after a great ances-ter, a legend, a tall tale, a truly ev-erlasting story, their ambition is to be remembered just like him.www.larkinpoe.com

    Supporting young performers

The Barnsley Acoustic Roots Festi-val is keen to support young per-formers.

Prior to the festival weekend, we have been working with pupils from The Kingstone School who have been exploring traditional music, dance and story telling. With the support professional per-formers, a special concert will be held on Thursday 31st March at the school. Tickets will be available on the night, with proceeds being used to support further out reach activites.

In addition, young local perform-ers, solo artists and duos aged 21 and under are taking part in audi-tions at Kingstone School on Sat-urday 2nd April from 11.30am. The auditions will see the ten acts who have applied, perform a short set to the audience. 2 or 3 of these young performers will then be in-vited to perform on the main stage on Sunday 3rd April.

This year, one young act will be supporting Cara Dillans concert, and will receive: The 2011 Seth LakemanRising Star Trophyfrom a member of the Lakeman family, as a reward for their efforts!

Other opportunities for the young, and not so young, include the open mic sessions organised for Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
