I was appalled to see the drunkern antics of some young people in Goldthorpe on the national news celebrating the death of Mrs Thatcher. I only hope that people across the rest of Britain don’t “tar us all with the same brush” here in Barnsley. We may not have agreed with her politics but to celebrate in the way they did was nothing short of embarrassing - especially as some shown on TV were too young to even remember the strike. A “touchy” subject Sarah. Thatcher and her government single handedly destroyed the mining industry in Barnsley which had a catastrophic effect on local communities which (in part) has produced some of the major problems in our town today. The anger is obviously still here particularly amongst some young unemployed people who must feel she is to blame.

A Charity Event has been planned to help raise funds and awareness for local lad Jake Blatch who has Diamond Blackfan Anaemia (DBA).

Diamond Blackfan Anaemia is a rare blood condition usually diagnosed before 12 months of age where patients fail to produce red blood cells properly and may need treatment ranging from monthly blood transfusions to regular steroid treatment, and in some cases bone marrow transplants.

The event held at Jump WMC in July will have the one and only Lady Bacardi starring and it promises to be the Charity Event of 2013.

Jakey’s Journey Charity Event Hi my name is Jake and I have a very rare blood disorder called Diamond Blackfan Anemia. This means my bone marrow

doesn’t produce red blood cells which carry the oxygen around my body, this only effects 600-700 people in the world and only a 105 in the UK. I was very very poorly at first and mummy and daddy weren’t sure if I was going to live or die for a while. My hemoglobin level was very low at 3.7. I was having transfusions every week at first, and they then it became monthly. Once my levels reached 8 I was able to start on a steroid medication which could help me. I started on a very high dose of 20mg a day and at first this wasn’t working and I was still having blood transfusions on a regular basis. Mummy and daddy were told that I would be in need of a bone marrow transplant but then 1 day my body starting reacting to the medication, and I am now maintaining. I still have bad days and I have to go for fortnightly check ups and one day the medication could just stop working and a transplant will then be needed but we live each day as it comes and enjoy all the good days and hold on during the bad ones. We want to raise funds and awareness for DBA UK so they can keep up the good work they do supporting families like mine. So please visit the website and donate any amount you can spare. Local veterinary surgeon Caroline Richards and partner for Barnsley Vets4Pets is warning dog owners to be on the lookout for a potentially fatal disease caused by infection from the lungworm parasite (Angiostrongylus vasorum).

Last year’s damp summer and mild winter conditions have proved ideal for slug and snail populations, leading experts to warn of a continued spread of lungworm in the UK.

A study by the RVCi shows that lungworm is spreading beyond the traditional geographic distribution with 20 per cent of veterinary practices across the country reporting at least one case of the parasite.

Lungworm is a parasite that dogs become infected with after eating common garden slugs and snails carrying the larvae. Once inside the dog’s system, the parasite travels through the body eventually ending up in the heart. If the infection is left untreated, the dog’s health can rapidly deteriorate, and can even result in death.

To help raise awareness of the parasite, Caroline Richards is joining other vets and owners nationwide in support of the national ‘Be Lungworm Aware’ campaign. The scheme will offer support and education to owners and vet practices throughout April, which has been labelled ‘Lungworm Awareness Month’.

Caroline Richards explains “Dogs which have picked up a lungworm infection can show a number of different symptoms. Lungworm often gives rise to breathing difficulties, ranging from a lack of energy to coughing. However, the symptoms can be varied and some dogs may appear healthy in the early stages of infection, so if owners are concerned about their dog’s health, they should contact their veterinary practice for further advice”.

Routine use of a specific treatment, available from veterinary surgeons, prevents dogs from developing a lungworm infection. Some pet owners believe that lungworm can be prevented using conventional worming tablets, which is unfortunately not the case.

Sculpture Set For Chamber Charity Appearance

The 125-foot sculpture will overlook the area from a site in Kimberworth, Rotherham when it is erected in 2015 and the model will be present when the ball is held at the nearby Magna Science Adventure Centre on Saturday 11 May.

Themed around ‘Yorkshire Pride’, the ball will celebrate the region’s mining and steel heritage, then travel into its future at the forefront of technological and manufacturing excellence.

The event will also recognise Yorkshire’s superb businesses and the region’s cultural prowess in sport, music and art with entertainment from the Gillian Banks Theatre School.

“This wonderful occasion will be a celebration of ‘Yorkshire Pride’, recognising the ambition and achievements of innovators and entrepreneurs across the region and the Man of Steel will add to this; honouring the steel and coal heritage of the City Region and embracing the new technology sector led by facilities such as the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre in Rotherham,” said the Man of Steel sculptor Steve Mehdi.

Yorkshire-based contemporary dance company, Mad Dogs Dance Theatre, presents the world premiere tour of Dogs Land, a new hard-hitting contemporary dance theatre work choreographed by Artistic Director Douglas Thorpe.

Written by Yorkshire-based playwright Joanne Hartley, the piece uncovers a touching story of love, power and emotional attachment between man and wife. Provocative and profane, Dogs Land examines the relationships between two couples living in East London gang land. Within both relationships there are tensions and delusions. Time and space blur as each tragic individual reaches out tenderly for something that feels real. Jealous anger explodes, driving the story to a full throttle dramatic climax as relationships are pushed to the limit.

A high impact, ‘full throttle’ piece of work, Dogs Land also has a surprising tenderness, exploring what happens when relationships fall apart.Mad Dogs Dance Theatre was founded in 2008 as the company of Douglas Thorpe. Since its foundation the company has committed to creating extremely explosive, powerful, physical dance theatre, with its based in Leeds, Yorkshire UK. To date, the company have created and toured 5 works – Dry Toast (2008), Beast (2009), A mind as beautiful (2010), Missing (2012-2013) and Dogs Land (2012-2013).

Following the success of Beast, Douglas was commissioned to work with Internationally acclaimed ACE Dance & Music and Phoenix Dance Theatre whose work toured extensively throughout the UK and beyond during 2009-2010. In 2011, Douglas was commissioned to create a new work for Staatstheatre Tanz Braunschweig, Germany. This was shortly followed by a commission from Leeds Canvas and Brothers Quay to create a new work for Overworld’s and Underworld’s, Yorkshire Cultural Olympiad project that took over Leeds City Centre in May 2012. This work has since gone on to be presented at Yorkshire Dance and Dance City and will be presented at Dancebase as part of the Edinburgh Festival

“Dogs Land” Comes to The Civic on the 4th May

New volunteers are being sought to help provide care for patients staying at Barnsley Hospice.

The hospice is urgently seeking dedicated people to work as auxiliary nurse support volunteers in its Inpatient Unit (IPU) plus volunteers for the unit’s kitchen.

The IPU has ten rooms and is staffed around the clock, every day of the year, by specialist nurses who are part of a team of professionals. Both patients and their loved-ones have access to a range of services. Auxiliary nurse support volunteers carry out a range of jobs. These include helping to wash and move patients, sitting with them or reading to them, greeting visitors, and changing beds.

Current volunteer Sam Prince, (right) aged 19, who is on a gap year before going to medical school, took up the role two years ago and spends every Saturday morning at the hospice, at Gawber. Sam, from Cudworth, decided he wanted to donate his time after initially doing a school work experience placement as a fund-raiser. He said as well as giving him valuable experience for his future career it was personally “very, very rewarding”. He commented: “Every time you leave, you have a massive sense of accomplishment because you’re making a different to people’s lives.” Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer should get in touch with volunteer services manager Barbara Cronin for an initial chat.

Barnsley College Hair and Beauty students have put down the scissors and straighteners to take on a fitness challenge this Summer.

Each week for the next seven weeks, the Level 1 Hairdressing students will train with Sports Academy staff to increase their fitness and get them ready to take on a Race for Life. The sessions run every Tuesday morning starting with warm up and stretching exercises followed by walking and running to music at the Honeywell Sports centre. There will also be a selection of indoor and outdoor exercises including some gym work to increase stamina.

There are three further sessions throughout the week open to both staff and students considering taking on a Race for life. These are Mondays and Thursdays 4.00pm to 6.00pm and Wednesday 12.00pm to 2.00pm. The sessions are free and will take place outdoors if weather permits.

Sports Participation and Project Coordinator Michala Spacey said: “Barnsley Sports Academy appreciates that undertaking a challenge like this can be daunting, but with a bit of practice and motivation anyone can do it. Come and walk, jog or run the 5K distance with help and support from others in a safe and supportive environment. “We encourage people to wear suitable footwear and clothing and bring a water bottle, a sense of humour and a smile.”

Hillies Swings Back Into Action with Revamped CourseOn May 15th Hillies Golf Course in Wombwell will be visited by Cllr Linda Burgess to officially open the revamped course.

Since 2012 the BPL facility has received a number of upgrades to improve the golfing experience for all players of all abilities. The course has also changed from a 9 hole par 31 to a par 32. The redesign of the Hillies course has taken place to stop congestion, enhance the speed of play and overall playing experience. Aesthetically there has been a replant of new flower beds to make the course as equally pleasing on the eye.

After a day of golf, the clubhouse is the ideal venue to relax while you talk over the highlights of your round. The spacious lounge and sun terrace with views of the fairways are complemented by the fully licensed bar, snack bar and pool table. It would be very easy to get carried away with a job like mine – I can understand how divas are made. People stop me in the street and say how much they like the books, they ask for autographs and go all twittery when I sign books for them. It’s very flattering and seductive. However, if I did get ‘up myself’ I would feel a virtual clout around my ears, I’m sure. I was, as my godmother so nicely puts it, born in the wrong place to get up my own ****.

I was once signing a book for an elderly lady who said to me, ‘I’ve seen you in the Chronicle this week. And on the TV. And doing a talk in the library. ’ ‘I know,’ I replied, ‘I’m everywhere at the moment.’ ‘Aye,’ she replied. ‘Like dog muck. That’s everywhere at the moment as well.’ No you can’t get up yourself with comments like that.

And they aren’t just confined to strangers – family put in their two pennorth as well. There I was, swanking off my new Merc to my dad – flicking on the heated seats, demonstrating the parking sensors and the Bluetooth phone. ‘Hmm,’ he wrinkled up his nose. ‘Doesn’t play cassettes does it though?’ I admitted defeat – it doesn’t. My swanky car does not impress dad. Neither did my Mont Blanc pen which my beloved bought me for Christmas. ‘How much are the refills for that going to be?’ asked dad, a proper Yorkshire question. And when I treated myself in the old house to a chandelier of that episode of Only Fools and Horses’s grandeur,

his only comment was ‘How are you going to clean that?’ (my answer was that I wasn’t, in case you’re wondering). My parents are still waiting for me to get a proper job. Any grand ways will not wash with them. When someone commented how lovely my house looked on Come Dine With Me, dad told them that ‘It’s the first time he’s seen it tidy.’ Nope – can’t get up myself.

You can guarantee that when one person gets excited when they see me in town and says to her friend, ‘Look it’s Milly Johnson.’ The friend nearly always says ‘Who?’ I then have to stand there wishing the ground would swallow me up whilst the person tries to explain what I do whilst the friend’s blank expression never lifts. Nope, you just cannot get afford to get up yourself, you’ll only get chopped down. I’m a long way off demanding riders of bowls of blue smarties and a box full of fluffy kittens to play with.

To be honest, even if I were in a position of being able to demand a rider – I think my ask wouldn’t cause too much upset: egg mayo (Hellmann’s and not of that light stuff either) and spring onion sandwiches on granary, a foot long eclair and a pint of Baileys.

That’s as far up myself as I hope I ever go and I’m presuming that I wouldn’t get too much of a clip around my virtual ear for it.

Recently at Karl Smith Men’s Grooming we decided after nearly 4 years in this unit at the lucorum building a little revamp was needed just to keep things fresh and add a bit of interest to the shop.

This has come in the form of going back to the roots of our industry. At the moment we trying to recreate the feel of an old school barber’s with a touch of gentlemen’s club thrown in for good measures. This will be achieved not just with the decor but with the uniforms as well. So far the changes have been received really well with aray of antique berbering equipment on display along with old pictures of barber shops and barber related adverts from the late 19th and early 20th century, it’s created a real talking point for us and our clients.

The recent changes have been inspired by a number of things, one being the number of our clients wanting clean old school styles including side parting, quifs and modern intercaptions of rocka billy styles. (right).

This style has been created using two great products from Structure. Beach sea salt spray and Twist styling Gum. Whilst the hair is damp spray in the beach spray and start blowdry the hair thaw sea salt in the spray gives the hair great volume and control meaning not much styling product is needed on this occasion we used Twist styling Gum, which gave us a great shine on the finished style without setting solid.

Rebecca Grant who plays the Dingle’s Doctor in Emmerdale and nurse Daisha Anderson in Holby City dropped into Rob Royd farm Shop, Worsbrough last month.

Rebecca who was promoting healthy home grown British food as part of her healthy living campaign has recently been filming “Prisoners Wives” in Sheffield when she spotted Rob Royd Farm Shop by chance.

Grant has a host of roles as part of her acting career and as well as parts in Emmerdale and Holby she has appeared in ‘Other People’ opposite Martin Freeman, ‘The Way We Live Now’ and ‘Kristina’ (an Independent Film in which she won best actress at The International filmmakers Festival for World Cinema) as well as on the big screen in ‘Chakara’, ‘Flipside’ and ‘The Other Boleyn Girl’.

Her stage credits include: Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Bombay Dreams and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest starring Christian Slater directed by Terry Johnson, Tagore’s Women by Kali Theatre; The House of Bernarda Alba; Who is this Jesus?; Bloodwedding; Why is John Lennon Wearing a Skirt?; Carmen; Mahabharata; Burlesque; Twelfth Night and The Glass Cage.

Rebecca, who grew up in Nottingham, says, “I love being up North but I currently live in London, finding Rob Royd Farm Shop was a real surprise!” Rebecca visited last month and walked away with unique foodie products that she says she even struggles to find in London.

Rob White (Pictured above with Rebecca) who is the owner of the Farm Shop is well known for his quality farm grown and local produce. He says he is very proud to attract customers like Rebecca Grant. “We want to make a difference and we try to find local produce that is healthy.”

The Farm shop has recently expanded and employs over forty staff. Rebecca Grant is currently on holidays around the Peak District.

From April 2013 people aged 24 and over will be able to invest in their future by taking out a loan for Further Education.

Currently, many learners have to pay an upfront fee in order to start their chosen course, but the new 24+ Advanced Learning Loans will mean there is nothing to pay until the learner is earning more than £21,000. This is a great opportunity for anyone returning to education after a break, those who need qualifications for work or business, or anyone who simply wants to learn a new skill or take a refresher course. For the first time in the UK, these loans will give learners in Further Education the access to financial support for tuition costs that many learners in University already benefit from.

The loans are not means tested or credit checked and are available to anyone planning to study a full or part time Level 3 or Level 4 course, Access to HE course, A Level or Advanced and Higher Apprenticeship. Students will be able to apply for a loan to meet the upfront costs of their qualification, which will be paid directly to the College on their behalf.

Barnsley College Principal, Colin Booth said: “This is a great way for adults to access courses that previously, for financial reasons, may have been out of their reach.”

Rates of interest will be lower than anything currently available and outstanding balances will be written off after 30 years. Loans can be taken out for Access to Higher Education programmes and if the student subsequently progresses to a HE course, the 24+ Advanced Learning Loan will be written off. Learners with an existing degree qualification can also apply for a loan if they are looking to take a course for a career change.

Prospective learners are encouraged to seek independent financial advice from The Money Advice Service at www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk before taking out a loan.

Barnsley Eye favorites Hitomi return with their third EP titled, ‘Home.’ The band have been working on the 5 track EP for the past six months and decided to self produce the tracks with guitarist, Joshua Ingamells, mixing the album.

Since we last reviewed their stunning “Unravel Me” EP Hitomi beat over 10,000 competing bands to earn their place at the Live & Unsigned national final at the o2, London.

During 2012 the band self produced and released some great rock anthems, and then had success with several of the tracks being aired on BBC radio and used on national, prime time TV shows such as Hollyoaks.

Hitomi are launching the Home EP at Sheffield venue, Corporation, followed by a tour of venues across the north of England.

March saw a welcome return to MAGNA of the CAMRA Beer Festival.

Around 3,000 people gathered around the main stage to enjoy a huge selection of real ales and great music as primo Friday night position was taken up by Rotherham based TUSH. This local band’s origins span twenty years, during which the have morphed into an extremely capable band, who on the night performed an eclectic mix of top quality rock and pop.

Vocally led by charismatic Barnsley resident Roddy Bridges, alongside veterans John Fox on guitarist and Ian Crowther on drums, TUSH created a ‘Wall of Sound’ experience. With rhythm guitarist Paul Woodcock, Sam Earl on Bass and Liam Fretwell on synthesizer and keyboards, performing fluently, TUSH worked through an enjoyable and diverse set-list with passion, professionalism and consummate skill.

Initiating the set with fantastic covers of Simple Minds, The Stereophonics, Stevie Wonder, The Cranberries and Muse, climaxing with a cracking performance of Kings of Leon’s ‘Sex on Fire’ by way of the finale. Throughout, the festival was extremely well organized and supported, and for me at least, topped off by a band well worth seeking out.

The season may be coming to a close for Barnsley Football Club (and what a rollercoaster it has been) but there is still one big event to go at Oakwell.

This year former Oakwell hotshot Bruce Dyer’s Love Life UK annual Community Festival and Street Ball tournament will be staged at Oakwell which will include a special all-star exhibition match on the main Oakwell pitch.

The date of the event is Monday 6th May 2013 and various events will be starting from 1pm to 6pm with the exhibition match kicking off at 4pm on the main pitch.

There will also be a live stage with music, a fun fair, food stalls and a Street Ball 3 v 3 tournament taking place on the day. Miracle man Fabrice Muamba will visit Barnsley Football Club as part of a fun festival organised by retired footballer Bruce Dyer.

Committed Christian Muamba (above) shot to prominence when he collapsed and stopped breathing in an FA Cup quarter-final between Bolton and Spurs. He remarkably recovered but was forced to retire.

He will visit Oakwell on Monday 6 May to share his story and meet fans at the Love Life Festival.

Dyer said: “We’re really excited and this promises to be a historic event for the town. I met Fabrice at the Reebok Stadium. He’s a great guy with a powerful story and he’s excited about coming to Barnsley. “A big talking point about the day will be the exhibition game. I’m close friends with Bobby but we will be opponents on that day and will be going up against each other aiming to win.

“He keeps joking with me that I’ve put a bit of weight on since I retired but I’ve scored a lot of goals on that Oakwell pitch and I’ll be aiming to bag a couple more!”

It seems like ages ago and in that time the magazine has had it’s fair share of ups and downs especially in tough economic times but 5 things have always remained in our ethos throughout the 106 issues we have produced...

1. We strive to give away a quality FREE glossy publication to the people of Barnsley no matter who you are; rich or poor, young or old...it’s YOUR magazine!

2. We make sure that the news stories are always and of interest to everyday local people, not bringing about doom and gloom or touching on boring, controversial or political issues.

3. We always include a letters section where people are free to express themselves in any way they wish - we very rarely edit down these letters.

4. We try not to overload the magazine with adverts. Indeed - it is with the aid of revenue raised by advertising that the magazine can continue to be produced but we make sure there is always a balance between articles, columns, competitions, news, pictures and advertisements.

5. Where possible we use local people to produce the magazine and always give the public every opportunity to get involved through their own columns, writing, photography and art.
