Fancy a trip to thebeach?There are lots of possibilitiesaround Exeter, and all are easy toget to by bus:
Exmouth – Service 57 runs fromExeter to Exmouth, Monday toSaturday every 15 mins, (daytime)and hourly (evening). The Sundayservice is every 30 mins (daytime)and hourly (evening).
Dawlish Warren – Service 2 runsevery 20 minutes during the day,hourly during evenings and onSundays. The Service 2 will alsotake you to Dawlish andTeignmouth.
There are also regular buses toSidmouth, Seaton and Torquayfrom Exeter.
Jurassic Family coming to visit? Why nottreat them to a day out along theJurassic Coast! The award winning
is the perfect wayto visit many of the mainattractions along this stunningWorld Heritage Site.
Why not use the bus to walk asection of the Coast Path or visitthe seaside at Weymouth, Seaton,or Lyme Regis. There are also lotsof attractions along the route, sowhy not have a day out atPecorama or Abbotsbury Swanneryor go fossiling at Charmouth orLyme Regis. Alternatively just sitback and enjoy the views from thetop deck.
A day out on costs so little - a FirstDay Explorerticket offers unlimited travel alongthe route for a day and can also beused on all First bus services inHampshire & Dorset. The ticketcosts just £6.50 per adult.
DartmouthThe historic port of Dartmouthhas a picturesque setting, beingbuilt on a steep wooded valleyoverlooking the River Dart. The Pilgrim Fathers sailed fromDartmouth in 1620 and manyhistoric buildings from thisperiod remain, includingDartmouth Castle, AgincourtHouse and the Cherub Pub,while Bayards Cove has beenused in many television series.
Things to doTake a trip on the river – regularRiver Link services will take you tothe mouth of the Dart to view thecastle, or up river to Greenway,Agatha Christie’s former house, orall the way to Totnes. Stroll aroundthe shops – there’s an interestingselection to visit as well as galleriesand plenty of places to eat.
Visit Dartmouth Castle – catch theboat from Town Quay to theCastle, which was in use from 1388until the Second World War,guarding the Dart estuary.
Getting to DartmouthFrom Exeter you can take the trainto Paignton, then the 120 bus fromPaignton to Kingswear where youwill be able to take a short trip onthe ferry across the River Dart toDartmouth, or alternatively takethe steam train from Paignton toDartmouth.
Alternatively, you could take thetrain or X64 bus from Exeter toTotnes, then service 111 toDartmouth, which also provides adirect link from Torquay. On theway to Dartmouth the 111 alsopasses Woodlands Leisure Park, oron some days River Link sail fromTotnes.
PlymouthWhy not visit the historicmaritime City of Plymouth. As well as a wide selection ofshops including the renownedDrakes Circus shopping centre,you can walk up to the Hoe fora great view over PlymouthSound, visit the historicBarbican, or take a trip to viewthe ships in Devonport.
Things to doVisit the National MarineAquarium, which has over 400species spread over six zones. Thereare all kinds of marine creaturesfrom seahorses to sharks.
Take a walk up to the Hoe and seewhere Francis Drake is said to haveplayed bowls before sailing toengage the Armada. Smeaton’sTower is the old Eddystonelighthouse, which when replacedwas rebuilt on the Hoe. Climb tothe top for the best views overPlymouth Sound and Drakes Island.Adjacent to the Hoe is the RoyalCitadel, which was originally builtin the late 1660’s and is still inmilitary use today. Guided tours areavailable on Tuesday and Thursday.
Explore the historic Barbican areaand the Mayflower Steps, fromwhere the Pilgrim Fathers sailed tothe New World. There are manyinteresting shops, galleries andplaces to eat in the area and boattrips to view the Dockyard departfrom adjacent to the MayflowerSteps.
Getting to PlymouthFrom Exeter you can either takethe X38 bus, or the train. The X38stops in the bus station, which isconvenient for the Town Centreand Barbican. The Rail Station isabout a 10 minute walk, or 5minute bus ride from the Town.
Why not trya day out by bus?There are lots of greatplaces to visit in Devon, sowhy not take a trip on thebus and enjoy the sceneryalong the way.
With a StagecoachExplorer ticket costing just£6.90 you can haveunlimited travel on allStagecoach South Westservices for the day.
FIRST also offer a similarticket for use on all FirstSouth West services for just£7.30.

SidmouthTake a trip to the seaside at thehistoric Regency town ofSidmouth, located on theJurassic Coast. Take a strollalong the Esplanade, explorethe town or stroll around theConnaught Gardens.
Things to doTake a walk up Peak Hill, forspectacular views over the townand coast. Visit the ConnaughtGardens with a collection of cactiand carnivorous plants in theshowhouse, a sunken garden and avariety of plants and topiary,immortalised in verse by Sir JohnBetjeman.
“Pause on Peak Hill, look eastwardto the town,Then to theConnaught Gardens wander downand in the shelter of its tropicbowers, I see its bright and outsizeDevon flowers”.
Spend some time on the beach. Thebeach next to the Esplanade ispebbles, but walk up the hill andJacobs ladder beach is sandy andsheltered by high cliffs. You canclimb Jacobs ladder to visit the Caféor Connaught Gardens from thebeach.
Take the bus to visit the DonkeySanctuary. From small beginningsthe Sanctuary now rescues andcares for hundreds of donkeys.
Visit Slade House Farm to meetsome of their donkeys and learnmore about the work of thecharity.
Stagecoach bus 52A operates fromSidmouth to the Sanctuaryapproximately hourly.
Getting to SidmouthFrom Exeter catch 52A or 52B. All the bus services stop at theTriangle which is convenient for theTown Centre and Esplanade.

BarnstapleTake a trip to North Devon’smain town, which claims to bethe oldest borough in England,having been granted its charterin 930. There’s a wide variety ofshops, while the traditionalPannier Market is well worth avisit.
Things to doVisit the Museum of North Devonto learn more about the physicaland human history of the area. Thedisplays include the Tarka Galleryand the regimental collection ofthe Royal Devon Yeomanry.
Take a ride along a section of theTarka Trail, which stretches for over180 miles in a figure of eight. Thesections from Barnstaple toBideford or Braunton make anattractive ride, so why not hire abike at Barnstaple Rail Station andfollow the trail alongside the Tawestuary. As both sections follow oldrailway lines they are flat and easygoing.
Visit the Heritage Centre at QueenAnne’s Walk, which will take youthrough the history of Barnstaplefrom Saxon times, throughexhibitions and hands on exhibits.
Once you are in Barnstaple, whynot venture afield and visit Croyde& Saunton. The long miles ofgolden sand at Saunton Beach area wonder to behold. The beachsand dunes behind are the largestSand Dune network in England andare a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.Croyde is known for its picturesquethatched cottages and shelteredbay. There are world famous pubsand anabundance ofcampsites andB&B’s. The 308bus runs halfhourly fromBarnstaple toCroyde, viaSaunton.
Getting to BarnstapleFrom Exeter you can either takethe 155 bus, via South Molton, the315 via Torrington and Bideford, ortake the train along the Tarka Line.The 155 and 315 both stop in thebus station, which is in the TownCentre. The Rail Station is about aten minute walk, or 5 minute busride from the Town.
