Arcangelo Corelli

Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) was one of the most prominent Italian violinists and

composers of the Baroque era. He was employed as music director to Cardinal

Ottoboni, and as such wrote sonata de chiesa (church sonata) for church functions,

and sonata de camera (chamber sonata) for aristocratic audiences and events. Healso composed 12 concerto grossi, some of which have become popular in modern

western culture. He wrote only instrumental music, all for string instruments. Corelli

also laid the foundations for modern violin technique, being one of the first to write

double stops and chords for the violin.

Corelli Sonata in D Minor Op. 5, No. 12, La Folia:This piece follows the structure of theme and variations, presenting a 16 bar theme

then 23 variations on this theme.
