Barrack Heights Public School Term 3 Week 2
PRINCIPAL'S REPORT
Welcome to Week 2. This afternoon we are holding our parent, carer and teacher interviews in the
school hall. Thank you to all the families who have scheduled a time with a teacher, strengthening the
link between home and school is essential for the success of our students and Barrack Heights Public
School. Please remember, students are welcome to attend. Involving your child in a three way
conference not only gives them responsibility for their learning, but shows we are all working together
in their learning journey.
Celebrating Local Council Week - Today our students had the opportunity to visit Shellharbour City
Council and be involved in a number of activities to celebrate Local Council Week. Students and teachers
were involved in a number of fun activities which helped them learn more about our local area and the
role City Council plays in keeping the Shellharbour area flourishing. Take a look at our Facebook page for photos of the day.
Education Week - We are celebrating Education Week by hosting an open day next Thursday. Parents,
carers and loved ones are invited to the school hall at 12pm for a spectacular performance by our school
choir. Following this performance, classrooms will be opened where loved ones can engage in STEM
based activities as well as look at all the wonderful learning opportunities happening in our classrooms.
Following the open classrooms we will be having a picnic lunch out on the back oval. A meal deal order
form will be sent home with students today. Families are encouraged to pre -order meal deals to ensure
they do miss out. There will only be a very limited amount of left overs on the day. An information note
with further details was sent home last Friday. If you have any questions about this day, please contact
the school.
ThinkUKnow Parent Presentation - Barrack Heights PS will be hosting an online safety presentation for
parents and carers on Tuesday August 20 at 5:30pm. The presentation will be held in the school hall and
is open to all year groups. In today's society our children are facing an online world that they are not
prepared for, as parents and carers we might not be prepared for the world either. This ThinkUKnow
presentation is focused on understanding online footprints, the dangers associated with forums, gaming
and the like, as well as a place to raise concerns and questions. It is strongly encouraged for all parents and carers. For more information on this presentation, please see the section further in this newsletter.
Celebrating Success - At Barrack Heights Public School, we love celebrating the success of our students.
If your child has been successful outside of school, we want to know. Please send an email to our school
with a photo of your child and a short blurb explaining their success. We will then endeavour to include this in our school newsletter.
Our school email address is: [email protected]
Enjoy your week!
Warm regards,

TEACHING & LEARNING
From the Library...
Book Week is fast approaching and will be held in Week 5 (August 19 - 23). The theme for Book Week is
"Reading is my SUPERPOWER!". During Book Week we will be holding a parade - THURSDAY August 22
from 9:15am. Students can come dressed as their favourite character from a book. We strongly
encourage students to come as book characters, not just in dress up clothes as we want to promote the love of reading and travelling to new worlds through the engagement of stories and books.
In the weeks following Book Week (Weeks 6 and 7), we will be having a Book Fair where a huge
selection of books and items will be available to purchase from the school Library. The Book Fair will run from Thursday August 29 to Thursday September 5.
Book Club Issue 5 catalogues were sent home last week. Please remember ONLY ONLINE ORDERS are
accepted. All orders need to be placed by Wednesday 7th August 2019. If you have any problems with
ordering online see Ms Holloway or call Scholastic direct on 1800 021 233.
PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE
For over 16 years, the Premier's Reading Challenge has been supporting students in NSW to develop a
love of reading for pleasure and leisure and providing them with opportunities to experience quality
literature. In 2018, over 302,000 students successfully completed the NSW Premier's Reading Challenge
- more than in any other year. This year, Mrs Holloway invites all students of Barrack Heights Public
School to take part in the challenge so we can make 2019 the best year yet!
The challenge opened Monday the 4th of March 2019 and closes on Friday the 30th of August 2019.
The PRC student site is available again this year! Students can search for books to read, add books to
their reading logs, and track their progress throughout the challenge. You can fi nd the site at
https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/studentExperience.html#/
Happy reading!
YOU CAN DO IT!

Learning Intentions
1. Students will understand that they can succeed even when faced with obstacles.
2. Students will understand that they can use positive self-talk to overcome obstacles and solve problems.
3. Students will understand that by being kind to others, they will feel happier.
4. Students will understand the meaning of gratitude.
5. Students will be able to express gratitude for the people and things in their life.
EDUCATION WEEK - Week 3
SAVE THE DATE - Thursday August 8 at 12pm
ThinkUKnow Parent Presentation
SAVE THE DATE - Tuesday August 20 at 5:30pm
ThinkUKnow is a free, evidence-based cyber safety program that provides presentations to Australian
parents, carers, teachers and students. It provides information on the technologies young people use,
the challenges they may face, and importantly, how they can be overcome.
They aim to provide you with the tools to create a safer online environment for young people in your care. Their presentations cover what young people say, see and do online.
The presentations cover topics such as social media reputation management, cyberbullying, ‘sexting’,
online grooming, online gaming, inappropriate content, privacy management, identity theft, how to
protect your devices, and how to report matters when things go wrong.
We are hosting a parent and carer presentation on Tuesday August 20 at 5:30pm in the School Hall . All
parents and carers are invited to attend, no matter how old your child is. In today's society we MUST be
up to date with what our children are facing in their online world and we need to know how to keep
them safe. Even if you think you know... I am certain you will still learn something new at this presentation.
If you would like more information on this presentation please visit the website https://www.thinkuknow.org.au/ or call the school on 42 964222.
