ARBOR DAY

Shirley Magner is chairman for Arbor Day. She spoke to Dr. Cole who said the tree they planted had died - one other had also died. She will talk to Pasquesi Home & Farm and decide what to do about replacing the two trees. There is a question as to what to do with rooms that have split classes. There is a total of 615 fourth graders. The display case at the library has been reserved. Arbor Day will be April 26th. The committee is checking into the most economical place to buy the seedlings. They may deliver each tree in a plastic bag with advertising on the sides of the bag. A grown tree from a previous student will try to be found for advertising Arbor Day. The consensus of the principals is they like alternating trees and seedlings.

PLANTER BOXES

Cinder Dowling will give her report in November. Kay Golitz complimented Joyce Simpson for the beautiful flowers in the gazebo.

BARRINGTON BEAUTIFICATION

Cathy Lee will present the Barrington Beautification winners at the November meeting. The winners she announced at the September meeting may be changed.

CONSERVATION

Garden Clubs are encouraged to help Citizens For Conservation in seed collecting. Daria Sapp says Stillman Nature Center also needs help in collecting seeds etc.

EDUCATIONAL FOCUS COMMITTEE

Carol McClintock reported the September 7 "Gardening Workshop Program" was successful - 55 people attended.

Penny Horne's classes for three Thursday mornings starting Sept. 14th are filled with 15 people. They will meet at the Methodist Church.

Maryjo Garre will present a single program "Flower Arranging For the Home" on November 11th at the Barrington Hills Village Hall. The fee is $30 - reservations for 15 only. If interested send a check for $30 payable to Council of Barrington Garden Clubs to:

Lorraine Briggs 62 Windrush Lane, Barrington Tel; 381-3931

Carol urges everyone to make reservations early to help in the planning of a program. Nine reservations were made for the Sept. 7th program and fifty five people showed up - makes being prepared difficult.

NATIONAL GARDEN WEEK

Irene LaCesa thanked all the presidents for their cooperation. National Garden Week turned out to have been very successful and there are plans to make it an annual event.

ADOPT-A-HIGHWAT

Little Garden Club has adopted a highway in Barrington. The village has four designated areas. Any club that wants to make a two year committment to cleaning a specific area (about 1 1/2 miles) can call Shirley Magner 639-2936 and she will give you information about the forms that need to be completed. There is hope that other garden clubs will want to adopt a highway.

RUTH AND ROBERT WORK PARK

This project was started in tne, 1960's. Mary Galvin and Peggy Graham are going to check the area to see what improvements need to be done. We plan to make the improvements - then end our participation.

LIBRARY PLANTINGS

Five of the red pines that the Council planted at the library had to be replaced. The new trees planted were; 3 Norway spruce, 1 Mugho pine and 2 Witch Hazel trees.

BY LAWS

The last update to the By-Laws of the Council were made March 9, 1988. Some changes will be made and sent out to be discussed at the November meeting.

COUNCIL PUBLICITY

National Garden Week was well publicized in various Barrington papers such as "Barrington Lifestyles", "Village Report" etc. In the "Letters to the Editor" column in the Barrington Courier Carol Beese wrote a nice letter thanking the Council for the planter boxes.

MEMBERSHIP BOOKS

Presidents attention: Please send two copies of your year book to Kay Golitz.

New Business

Kay asked if anyone knew who ls reponsible for the flowers in a small area "Arbor Park" situated at Hwy 14 and North Avenue. Does anyone know? Look into it.

Our meetings will be held in the large meeting room on the first floor of the library the rest of the year.

Carol McClintock suggested there be a category in "Peek at the Week" in the Barrington Courier called "Gardening". No action was taken.

Daria Sapp announced that the Garden Clubs of Illinois is sponsoring the 3rd course of the Environmental Studies School in Barrington, October 10-12. This is the first time that this has been presented in Barrington. The instructors are excellent and this is a great opportunity for us to attend here at home. Presidents please pass out the brochures explaining the courses at your next garden club meeting and encourage those who are interested in learning more about the environment to take the class.
