Stephen Macknik and his wife SusanaMartinez-Conde are scientists at BarrowNeurological Institute but they havenrsquotbeen spending much time in the lab lately

Instead the neuroscientists are promotingtheir new book ldquoSleights of Mind What theNeuroscience of Magic Reveals About OurEveryday Deceptionsrdquo

BNIrsquos staff is keeping things moving alongback at the lab while the duo take theirmagic show on the road

Macknik director of the Laboratory ofBehavioral Neurophysiology at BNI which isbased at St Josephrsquos Hospital and MedicalCenter in Phoenix said the book exploresways magicians use the mind to trick thebrain Basically he said itrsquos a look at whatleads the mind to believe magic tricks arereal

The couple are considered experts in anew field called neuromagic which is thecross-disciplinary meeting of magic and science They have spent several years travelingthe globe meeting some of the worldrsquos greatest magicians and convincing them to allowtheir techniques to be studied

ldquoMagic tricks work because humans have a hard-wired process of attention and awarenessthat is hackablerdquo Macknik said ldquoBy understanding how magicians hack our brains we canbetter understand how the same cognitive tricks are at work in advertising strategybusiness negotiations and all varieties of interpersonal relations When we understand howmagic works in the mind of the spectator we will have unveiled the neural basis ofconsciousness itselfrdquo

Understanding these concepts also could help patients undergoing rehabilitation saidMartinez-Conde director of BNIrsquos Laboratory of Visual Neuroscience

ldquoMagicians manipulate our attention and awareness They can make you pay attention toone thing and suppress possible distractions Those distractions are the secret movestheyrsquore makingrdquo she said ldquoImagine if we can figure out principles behind magic tricks anduse them for neuro-rehab patients in the clinic who are having a hard time paying attentionbecause they are impairedrdquo
