I worked many games including the basketball, dart and water gun games as well as spun cotton candy and popcorn. I learned how to account for my book of business and dealt with so many colorful personalities. It was an amazing experience and taught me so much about the psychology of customers stepping up to the counter to win the big prize on display. I also was able to spend significant time with the original founder of Newton Shows, Lewis Newton, who was a terrific mentor—he shared countless hours with all of his workers [who mostly were from Northport/East Northport] teaching us so much about the business of entertainment and about life. What a terrific foundation for a young person to build, as they would soon face life’s future challenges. I grew up in Northport as did my parents, and my father was a long time Spanish teacher at Northport High School. We were active participants in the Northport community and I was so thrilled to be given an opportunity to work for Newton Shows. Little did Lewis Newton know but his commitment to the community in hiring so many Northport/East Northport young people to work for him helped so many of us be successful later on in life and give back to the community ourselves. I went on to attend Colgate University, played professional soccer for a few years and then experienced a long and successful career at Weeden and Co. From some of the very skills Lewis taught me I was able to work my way up to become CEO for almost 20 years of what became and still is a very large financial services company catering to the world’s largest institutional equity investors. I can’t thank the Newton family enough for getting me started in what has been a wonderful and productive life. I highly recommend any potential association for a town, church or local institution to engage Newton Shows family for their entertainment needs. They are hard working, ethical and really care about the local communities they serve. I will always remember they took a ‘shot” on me, and it ultimately led to great things. I only hope they are able to continue on their tradition of fair, clean and fun entertainment with such a big heart as they have continually demonstrated through the years. When is a job much, much more? It is when 30+ years later you still reflect on the positive experiences

and apply them to your current occupation and everyday life experiences. It was from the period of 1979

- 1984 that I was given the opportunity to work at Lewis J Newton and Sons. I was hired to work in the

Games Operations of the carnival. It was a tight group of people banding together to create an

environment of fun and excitement for the towns we visited each weekend. As a younger employee I was

particularly excited to bring my best effort each and every day, to prove that I belonged. The ownership

group and managers worked with the employees to ensure that each had the necessary resources and

skill set to accomplish the daily tasks while creating an opportunity to develop confidence, teamwork and

independent execution of required tasks. We were a group of employees that took pride in our work, enjoyed challenges, and delivering to our

customers the best product -services that we could deliver. Years later I reflect back on the skills I

learned at Lewis J Newton and Sons as well as the friendships that were forged. It was an opportunity to

execute certain tasks with high precision, develop a high level of reliability, take pride in the trust that was

awarded to me (as a young employee working in the games we were entrusted to be the steward of other

people’s money), and probably the most important was learning to have confidence to solve non-scripted

problems, all in a team setting. This was only made possible by having an ownership/management group

that had the skill set to motivate and reward its employees.Although a significant period of time has passed, I still apply these acquired skill sets in my current

position as a Relationship Manager with one of the largest commercial banks in the US. The organization

that I work for is recognized for many strengths including community involvement, high credit ratings,

execution of customer service, but the one that I take a lot of pride in is that institution has won highest

integrity honors two years in a row (this is out of all companies, not just banks). The numbers may be a

bit larger with a few more commas, but the learned core values of trust and pride remain the same.I now have children of my own who are approaching the age when the Newton's gave me a chance to

prove myself. It makes me proud to have worked at the Lewis J Newton and Sons which supported its

community and numerous other organizations, and although I am now on the West Coast, I am

affectionately known as Carnie amongst my group of friends at the local community swim club, as each

weekend we host a swim event and I sit comfortably behind the counter servicing deserving patrons.Do not hesitate to contact me directly with any questions or comments you may have.

To whom this may concern, Newton Shows has way more to offer as a Job then I could of ever imagined. Taking the time to train each individual on each task at hand. Teaching you not only your day to day Job but life long lessons. Encouraging staff to try knew things weather it be a new game, learning the food trailers or get creative flashing your game. There is always something new and exciting to take out of your days work. Starting Newton Shows at a young age of 14, I believed it would just be a part-time job that I would have for a couple of years for extra money and thats that. Little did I know how much I would get out of this part-time job. Newton Shows gave me the opportunity to take on new responsibilities I never had before. There is so many different positions at Newton Shows that I was able to figure out what I was well at and enjoyed. I enjoyed getting creative flashing games and working in the cotton candy trailer use to be my favorite. Given the opportunity to Manager at age 16, I was able to learn how to recruit, train, mentor, and manage 10-25 member team, ensuring continuous delivery of outstanding customer service and food safe worksite in food trailers. Also learning how to improve operational processes to reduce shrink and achieve optimal profitability. I was given the opportunity to help create the opening/operations of the newly purchase Funnel cake trailer which is what steered me into the career I am in today. Now, 24 years old with a Associates degree in Baking and Pastry arts. I am currently a Manager of Wild Flours Bake Shop in Huntington, New York. I also started up my own cake business Cakeuccino, creating custom cakes for all occasions. All the experience I was given at Newton Shows, the training, the mentoring, the support, the flexibility and the opportunities has lead me to where I am today. My 14 year old part time Job turned into the stepping stone for my life long career. It is an amazing Company to work for and I will be forever grateful for the person it made me today. To Whom It May Concern:

I started working at Newton Shows when I was a teenager. I began working as a

concession employee and eventually became a manager of the game concessions.

Growing up in the Northport/East Northport community, this job was a great

opportunity for me to meet other people my age from the community as well as develop

an understanding of what it was like being a part of a work place. While working at

Newton Shows I developed friendships that I still have and cherish, more than 20 years

later. At times, Newton Shows felt more like a second family than a job.

Throughout my years at Newton Shows I learned what it was like to work with

many different types of people and personalities. On a daily basis, I needed to be able

to work with other employees as well as deal with the public. I developed teamwork skills

with my co-workers to create a workplace that was professional and fun to be at. Being

a manager at Newton Shows helped me strengthen my leadership and organizational

skills. Providing a midway that was safe, visually appealing and fun to be on was

something that I strived for. One of the things that I enjoyed most was helping the new

staff. I was able to train new staff to run games, handle their money and interact with

Page 8: Barry Small 1038 Ponus Ridge Road New Canaan. Ct. 06840 To ... · food trailers or get creative flashing your game. There is always something new and exciting to take out of your

customers and other staff. It was a pleasure to be a part of helping the younger kids in

the community begin their first job at Newton Shows.

Many of the skills that I developed while working at Newton Shows help me in my

current career as a teacher. Being a teacher I have to manage a classroom that is filled

with a diverse population of students. I need to create a classroom that children can

cooperatively work together in and feel successful in their daily activities. Providing my

students with a structured and organized environment helps them follow through on

their school work. These are all areas that I worked on while at Newton Shows.

Newton Shows provides a great work place for people in the community. There

are many things that people can learn through working here. It is a great place to learn

how to conduct yourself in the work place and allows you to develop relationships with

others within the community.

Sincerely,

Kelly O’Gara
