AsthewintermonthsapproachIsureamlookingforwardtoabreakfromthecoldforMidwinterinSanDiego.EventsandscheduleforMidwinterareshapingupanditlookslikewe’llbedoingacombinedFridaynightdinner/happyhoureventwithGODORT.Also,IamworkingonsettingupatourorvisittotheSanDiegoZootoseehowtheyuseGISinconservationeffortsandgeneralzoomanagement.Detailswillbeannouncedonceeverythingissetinstone.

IgotnewstodaythatastudentstudyinglibraryscienceatDrexelUniversity(myalmamater)whoalsohasadegreeingeographyismakingherwaytoPennStatethisweektovisitwithmeandtalkaboutwhatitmeanstobeaMap/GIS/GeographyLibrarian.IhavetosaythatIamthoroughlyexcitedaboutthisvisitandithasmethinkingaboutoureffortstoreachouttostudentsstudyinglibraryscienceandwhatwecandotomakethemmoreawareofourspecialty.IknowwhenwehaveconferencesinthevicinityofalibraryscienceprogramasmallgroupofmembersgoandmeetwithinterestedstudentstotalkaboutMAGERT,andwehavetalkedaboutputtingtogetheramentoringdirectorywhereinterestedmemberscanmakethemselvesavailableforstudentswhoareinterestedinourfield.IthinknowmorethaneveritiscriticaltoincreaseawarenessaboutMap/GISLibrarianshipandMAGERT.SoIinviteyoutocometoanyofourmeetingswithideasonincreasingourvisibility(andhopefully,ourmembership!).

ThePolicyandStandardsDivision(PSD)oftheLibraryofCongresscontinuestodevelopgenre/formheadingsonadiscipline-by-disciplinebasis,andwillimplementgenre/formheadingsforcartographicresourcesonSeptember1,2010.

Asafirststeptowardimplementation,thePolicyandStandardsDivisionapprovedapproximately65newcartographicgenre/formheadingsonMay19,2010.ThesecondstepwilloccuronAugust18,2010,whenrevisionstotheformsubdivisionsthatincludetheword“maps”willbeapproved.Theexplanationofthedecisiontorevisethesubdivisionsisavailableinthedocument,“LibraryofCongresstoModifyStructureofFormSubdivisionsusedforCartographicMaterials.”

(Otherformsubdivisionscommonlyusedforcartographicmaterials,suchas--Aerial photographsand--Remote-sensing images,arenotbeingmodifiedatthistime.)

OnSeptember1,2010theLibrarywillimplementcartographicgenre/formheadingsandtherevisedformsubdivisionsinnewcataloging.PSDwillworktoupdateexistingbibliographicrecordstochangetheformsubdivisionsandaddgenre/formheadings,andexpectstocompletetheprocesswithinayear.

Theauthorizedcartographicgenre/formheadingsmaybeviewedinClassificationWebbysearchingontheheadingCartographic materialsanddrillingdownthroughthehierarchy.FullauthorityrecordsarealsoavailablethroughtheLibrary’sauthoritiesWebsite,throughitsSKOS-basedAuthoritiesandVocabulariesWebsite,andhavealsobeendistributedtosubscriberstotheMARCDistributionService.

Cataloging & Description of Cartographic Resources: From Parchment to Pixels, Paper to Digital

June24-25,2010,ALAAnnualConference,Washington,D.C.

Instructors:PaigeAndrew,PennsylvaniaStateUniversityLibraries;MaryLynetteLarsgaard,UniversityofCaliforniaatSantaBarbara(retired);SusanMoore,UniversityofNorthernIowa.

ThisALCTSPreconferencewasco-sponsoredbyMAGERTandOLAC.Withsuchfamousmapcatalogingexpertsasinstructorswhohaveworkedtogethersooften,itwasnosurprisethattheydeliveredsuchanoutstandingandwell-attendedmapcatalogingworkshop.PaigeAndrewandSusanMooretaughtcatalogingsheetmapsonthefirstday;MaryLarsgaardtaughtcatalogingdigitalmapsonthesecondday.Theyallhelpedoneanotherout,answeredquestions,interjectedcommentsandaddedhumor.Theirobviouscamaraderiequicklyputtheclassatease.

PaigeandSusanprovidedathoroughpresentationofthebasicsofcatalogingsheetmaps.Thereareafewareasthattendtobeespeciallydifficultfornewor“infrequent”mapcatalogers:1)title;2)mathematicaldata;and3)physicaldescription.Theinstructorsgavetheparticipantsplentyofopportunitiestodelveintothesechallengeswithanumberofhands-onexercises.Titleproblemsthatarisewithmapsincludehavingtoomanytitlestochoosefrom–tohavingnotitleatall(andeverythinginbetween,suchasscatteredtitleelementsandnocollectivetitleforamapset).Theinstructorsdiscussedhowtohandledescriptivelyeachofthevariouscircumstances.

A note on MARC coding

InJune2010,PSDannouncedthattheMARCcodingforgenre/formheadingswillberevised.Therevisionswillnotbeimplementeduntillate2010attheearliest.Catalogersshouldcontinuetousesecondindicator“0”(zero)inthe655fieldofbibliographicrecordsuntilfurthernotice.

PaigeandSusanwentontodiscussthemathematicaldataelementsthatareusedinmapcataloging.(Havingtodomathalwaysprovokesabitofangstamongsomeparticipants.)Theyprovidedmanyexamplesofrecordstohelpillustratethisdata.Theyalsoprovidedmanyhands-onexercisesforthisportionoftheclass.Theparticipantslearnedhowtodeterminescale,whattodowithprojectioninformation,andhowtoprovidecoordinates.(PaigeshowedushowtoproperlyusetheNaturalScaleIndicator.)Thisdataresidesinthe255and034fields.

Thephysicaldescriptioncanalsogetcomplicatedwithanumberofcreativepublishingscenarios.Thesimplestpossibilityisonemapononeside—butthereareoftentwoormoremapsononesheet,oronemapontwosheets—oronemaponbothsides(onemapcontinuedonthebackofthesheet),andmore.Therewasalsoquiteabitofdiscussionaboutancillarymapsandinsetsandtheirroleinthebibliographicdescription.

Subjectanalysiswasalsoatopicofthisworkshop.PaigeandSusanshowedushowtobuildaLibraryofCongresscallnumber(usingtheLC“G”classificationschedule).TheytouchedonauthoritycontrolandhowtouseLibraryofCongressSubjectHeadingsformaps.Theyalsogaveusaheads-upontherecentlyapproved65cartographicgenre/formheadingsalongwithothersubdivisionchangesthatwillbeimplementedbytheLibraryofCongressonSeptember1,2010.

Onthesecondday,MaryLarsgaardtaughttheclasshowtocatalogcartographicmaterialsthatareinelectronicform.Theparticipantslearnednewtermsandphraseslikedatums,ellipsoids,digitalrastergraphs,anddigitalorthophotoquarterquads.Metaloginggeospatialdataisabrandnewworldoutthere!Thisdiscussionmadethepriorday’smathematicaldatadiscussionseemlikeapieceofcake!Itwasagoodintroductiontothesenewtermsandphrases.Ms.Larsgaardemphasizedtheneedforrecordingprojection,coordinates—andespecially—resolution.

TheRDAToolkitbecameavailableJune23,2010,whilemostofuswereenroutetoALAAnnual.MarydiscussedsomeaspectsofRDAandwhatitmeanstomapcatalogers.

Inadditiontotheusualfieldsthatareusedtocatalogmaps,therearesomespecialonesfordigitalmaps,including:

KathleenalsopresentedaproposedlicenseagreementbetweenEBSCOandMAGERTtoindexCoordinates.DavidAllen,currentCoordinateseditor,hademailedhisconcernstothecommitteeaboutthecontract;heisspecificallyconcernedaboutsections2.1and2.3thatseemtoimplythatwemaynotreceiveroyaltiesifthepublicationisopenaccess,andthatwemaygetintotroubleifoneofourauthorsdecidestopublishanarticleforprofitormakesitavailabletosomeonewhointendstosellitforprofit.ToDavid,theseprovisionsseemtorestrictthe“openaccess”statusofthepublication.KathywillshowthistohercopyrightpersonatTexasA&Mandgettheiropinion.ItwasalsosuggestedthatwefindanotheropensourcepublicationindexedbyEBSCOandpublishedbyALAsowecanhaveamodeltogoon.KathleenwillcontinuetoworkonthisandreportbackbyMidwinter.

Digitization of other MAGERT publications–Wearetryingseehowmanypastissuesofbase linenotalreadyonlineareavailablebeforewestartlookingintoscanningissues.Fullissuesofbaselineareavailableonlinefromv.23(2002)topresent;v.20-22areonlyselectarticles.Oncewegetbase linedoneweshouldconsidergettingtherestofMAGERT’spublicationsonline,ifonlyforhistoricalpurposes.

MAGERT Map Scanning Registry update–ChrisKollencontactedWAMLaboutthepossibilityofcombiningtheirscanningregistrywithours;perMichaelSmith(alsoaWAMLmember)theyareinterestingindoingso.CurrentlynotmanypeopleareusingtheMAGERTregistry.KathysuggestedaGoogle-basedindexmapofregistrycoveragewouldbeuseful.Questionsassociatedwithcombiningthe2registriesinclude:Whowillhostit?Whowillprovidetechsupportandsecurity?andwhowillredesignthesite?MichaelwillcheckwithWAMLandgetbacktoChrisregardingmergerlogistics.

MAGERT wiki update–Theproblemswewerehavingwiththewikibeinghackedandunwantedupdatesbeingaddedappearstohavebeenresolved;Halliehasnothadtocleanupanypagesrecently.Withthependingswitchincontentmanagementsystems,whichwillintheorymakeupdatingthewebsiteeasier,wemayfindwenolongerwant/needtomaintainthewiki.

Website–ALAexpectstoswitchfromCollagetoDrupalasitscontentmanagementsystem,hopefullyearlyintheirnewfiscalyear.AsubcommitteeledbyChrisKollenevaluatedthewebsiteafterMidwinterandcameupwithrecommendationsforupdates;mostofthesehavebeenimplemented.ThissubcommitteewillbemadepermanentandChriswillcontinueasitschair.PertheEmergingLeaders’reportthewebsitecouldbeenhancedtodrawinmembersandvolunteers.WestillneedanassistantWebmaster,althoughwiththeswitchtoDrupalitisexpecteditwillbeeasiertofindsomeonewillingtotakethison.
