The series kicks off Friday (2/26) at 4 p.m. with the two teams playing a double header beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday and wraping up the series Sunday at 1 p.m. Last weekend, the Golden Flashes outslugged the Hilltoppers in the opening game of the 2010 season 13-10 after falling behind by four runs. Sophomore Travis Shaw gave Kent State its first lead of the season when with two outs and the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Shaw blasted the 2-0 pitch over the left field to give KSU the 6-4 lead. WKU retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth, but an RBI double by sophomore Kyle McMillen, a balk that scored sophomore David Lyon and an error that scored McMillen gave KSU the lead for good. Junior Justin Gill picked up his first win of the 2010 campaign while McMillen picked up his first save of his collegiate career Friday, recording the last five outs of the game on only 19 pitches. Redshirt junior Robert Sabo took the loss Saturday while sophomore David Starn took the loss Sunday. In the final two games of the series, pitching took over for the Hilltoppers, as they won Saturday 13-0 and 5-3 in the series finale. Wake Forest enters the series 2-3 after winning its first two contests of the year against Army and Dayton. However, the Knights and Flyers returned the favor by each handing the De- mon Deacons a loss to close out the weekend. The Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina handed Wake Forest its third-straight loss Tuesday by a final of 2-0. Redshirt junior Ryan Semeniuk leads the team with a .409 batting average, going 9-for-22 so far this season with two doubles, a home run and six RBI. Sophomore Austin Stadler is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA, giving up one earned run in six innings pitched in Wake Forest’s 6-2, season-opening win over Army. Stadler only has three hits in 12 at-bats, but two of the three hits are home runs. Wake Forest leads the all-time series 15-3, including a series sweep the last time these two teams played to open up the 2007 season. Wake Forest won 8-7, 8-4 and 8-6. Three current players from each team appeared in the series. KSU’s Jared Bartholomew started all three games and had five hits in 11 at-bats with three runs scored and an RBI. Anthony Gallas went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI while Robert Sabo made one appearance out of the bullpen, giving up one run in 1.2 innings of work. For the Demon Deacons, Joel Ernst and Alex Weisner saw time out of the bullpen while Mike Murray made one start. Ernst gave up three runs in one inning pitched while Alex Weisner gave up only one hit in 0.2 innings pitched. Mike Murray went 0-for-4 from the plate for the weekend. FouR dRAFted, thRee FReshMeN ALL-AMeRIcANsFour current Flashes were drafted by a Major League Baseball, but chose to either attend or return to Kent State. After a successful 2007 and 2009 seasons, redshirt junior Robert Sabo was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the

38th round (1,145th overall). However, Sabo came back to Kent State, following in the footsteps of 2008 Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Year, Chris Carpenter. Carpenter was drafted in 2007 by the New York Yankees but chose to come back to school. He was selected in the third round of the 2008 MLB draft by the Chicago Cubs.

Also drafted in 2008 with Carpenter was then-high school senior Travis Shaw. He was selected in the 32nd round (982nd overall) by the world champion Boston Red Sox. He decided to come to KSU and split time with Brad Winter at third base in 2009.

In 2009, Addison Dunn and Jason Bagoly joined the list of current Kent State baseball players who have been drafted. Bagoly was selected in the 40th round (1,201st overall) by the Colorado Rockies. Dunn was taken in the 45th round (1370th overall) by the Chicago Cubs.

Kent State also boasts at least one former Freshmen All-American in every class. Anthony Gallas was the first, earning this distinction by Louisville Slugger in 2007. In 2008, Ben Klafczynski earned four different Freshmen All-American honors, including first team honors from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper/Louisville Slugger and PING Baseball.

Last season, Andrew Chafin was named a Freshman All-American by Louisville Slugger. Chafin finished the season with the second-best single season ERA (1.26) in school history. He completed his freshman campaign with a 4-1 record and eight saves.

the WAKe FoRest coNNectIoNTo say there is a casual connection between Wake Forest and Kent State may be a bit of an understatement. Current

assistant coach Scott Daeley played for four seasons with the Demon Deacons and graduated in 2002. Current fifth-year senior Cory Hindel transferred to Kent State after spending two seasons at Wake Forest and former KSU head coach Rick Rembielak (1994-2004), a Varsity “K” Hall of Fame inductee in 2009, also coached the Demon Deacons for five seasons (2005-09).

Daeley lettered for WF in the 1998 and 1999 seasons. He went 91-261 (.349 average) in 199 with 91 hits, 27 doubles and three home runs. Hindel, who redshirsted in 2006 with the Demon Deacons, appeared in 12 games in 2007 for Wake Forest, making five starts. He had five hits in 21 at-bats with seven runs scored and an RBI.

Finally, Rick Rembielak coached for Wake Forest from 2005-2009 with an overall record of 142-142 with the school. At Kent State, he finished with a 373-251 record at Kent State (200-100 in the Mid-American Conference), the most overall and conference wins in school history.

MAKING the GRAdeWinning nine MAC Championships in the last 10 years, Kent State is no stranger to success on the baseball diamond.

To go along with their victories, they are also doing well in the classroom. In the fall semester, the basesball team had cumulative 3.20 GPA, the best in program history.“I think it is a testament to how hard our kids have worked,” said head coach Scott Stricklin. “As a coaching staff,

we have really stressed academics. It goes back to our players and the pride they take off the field in doing things the right way, which we all feel is very important.”

For the semester, 20 of 34 players on the roster recorded a GPA of 3.0 or better. Of those, 11 recorded a 3.5 aver-age or better.

eNdING the 2000’s IN stYLeThe 2000’s was the decade of the Golden Flashes in the Mid-American Conference. Kent State was either the MAC

Regular Season or Tournament champions every year in the decade except 2005.However, 2009 looked like it might end in disappointment when the Golden Flashes lost two MAC series to Akron

and Buffalo, the two MAC East teams who failed to qualify for the 2009 conference tournament. Momentum, and the 2009 season, may have turned around on one all-too familiar date: May 16.

On that date in 2008, the Miami RedHawks scored 12 runs in the bottom of the ninth to win 17-16. A year later, the Golden Flashes turned the tables on senior day. Down 11-5 entering the ninth, every senior in the lineup collected a hit as Kent State scored seven runs to win 12-11. Senior Greg Rohan, the 2008 MAC Player of the Year, provided the game-winning hit.

For the decade, Kent State led the MAC with a record of 166-79, a .678 winning clip. That is the best record the last 10 seasons in the conference, an amazing 14.5 games better than Ball State (154-96, .616% from 2000-2009).

déjà vu Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. For Northern Illinois and Western Kentucky against

sophomore Travis Shaw, the message was delivered loud and clear. On April 5, 2009, with the score tied at nine and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Shaw hit a 2-0 pitch

over the field wall to give Kent State a 13-9 win and complete the series sweep of Northern Illinois. On Feb. 19, 2010, in the top of the fourth against Western Kentucky, Shaw came to the plate and on a 2-0 pitch, hit

his second career grand slam over the left field wall to give Kent State a 6-4 lead. KSU went on to win 13-10.

Kent State BAseBALL

Notes: WAKe FoRestheAd coAch scott stRIcKLIN

I t took just two seasons for Scott Stricklin to earn Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year

honors after leading Kent State to a MAC regular season championship in 2006. And one year later, Stricklin had his alma mater playing in an NCAA Regional.

In his five seasons at Kent State, Stricklin’s teams have a combined 183-103 record.

The Golden Flashes had one of there best seasons in school history in 2009. Ranked 18th in Baseball America’s preseason poll, Kent State finished the season with a 43-17 overall record and 17-9 in the Mid-American Conference. The 43 wins were the third-most victories in school history. In the NCAA Tempe Regional, the Golden Flashes eliminated nationally-ranked Cal Poly.

The season featured many other highlights, including a no-hitter by pitcher Brad Stillings, the schools Mid-American conference-leading seventh tournament title, national player of the week honors, Andrew Chafin receiving MAC Freshman of the Year honors and seven players being drafted in the June MLB Draft, which tied a Kent State baseball record.

In 2008, the Golden Flashes turned a tough conference start into a MAC Cham-pionship. After beginning the conference slate 0-5, Kent State rattled off 16 wins in their final 19 conference games to claim the regular season crown. The Golden Flashes won their final six MAC series of the year, including sweeps of Toledo, Buffalo and Bowling Green. KSU advanced to the finals of the MAC baseball tournament before falling to rival Eastern Michigan.

Kent State summoned an unprecedented run to close the 2007 regular season. After opening the season with a 17-23 record, Stricklin’s team posted wins in 12 of its final 13 games to win the MAC East Division and enter the conference tour-nament as the second seed. In the tournament, Kent State’s pitching-laden squad claimed four more consecutive wins, never allowing the opposition more than three runs. The highlight of the 2007 tournament run was back-to-back 3-2 wins against Eastern Michigan on the Eagles’ home field.

And as has become tradition for KSU, the off-season brought not only jewelry, but draft choices as well. For the second straight year, five players signed pro-fessional contracts and pitcher Chris Carpenter took part in arguably the most prestigious of summer leagues - the Cape Cod League.

The Golden Flashes finished 38-19 in 2006, including a MAC best 19-7 mark in conference play. KSU advanced to the championship game of the ‘06 MAC Tourna-ment and placed six players on the All-MAC First Team. Midway through his second season, Stricklin earned hit 50th career victory on April 11, 2006 at Duquesne. Fol-lowing the season, five players from the 2006 team signed professional contracts.

In 2005, Stricklin led the Golden Flashes to a 33-win season, the second most victories by a MAC East team.

Now beginning his sixth season, Stricklin became the 16th head baseball coach at Kent State in July of 2004, replacing long-time head coach Rick Rembielak who accepted the head coaching position at Wake Forest.

The appointment was Stricklin’s first head coaching job at any level and according to those who know him best, is a perfect fit to continue the tradition and excellence of Kent State baseball.

Stricklin, 38, returned to Kent State after serving his previous three seasons as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Georgia Tech under former Kent

State head coach Danny Hall. Stricklin was responsible for the Yellow Jackets’ hit-ters while working with the catchers and serving as the team’s first base coach. Stricklin, who also was a volunteer coach with the Yellow Jackets from 1998-99, rejoined Hall’s staff in July 2001 after spending the previous two years as pitching coach at Vanderbilt in 2000-01.

“This has been a very exciting opportunity to come back to Kent State,” Stricklin said. “It was an honor to take over a program that has had such great tradition. This is an exciting time for this program because of the generosity of the Schoonover family and the stadium project and under the leadership of Laing Kennedy, I feel this program is starting to take the next step.”

In his role as Georgia Tech’s recruiting coordinator, Stricklin landed a recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in 2002. That class included a pair of second round draft picks in Micah Owings and Tyler Greene, the highest drafted players ever to enroll at Georgia Tech, in addition to the highly regarded Jason Neighborgall. The Yellow Jackets’ 2003 recruiting class also was ranked among the best in the nation.

As the recruiting coordinator at Vanderbilt, Stricklin attracted a nationally-ranked recruiting class in his final year with the Commodores that was ranked seventh in the nation by Baseball America magazine.

In 2002 at GT, Stricklin helped Georgia Tech was extremely successful as the Yellow Jackets won a school-record 52 games and advanced to the College World Series in 2002. Under Stricklin’s direction, Yellow Jacket hitters produced one of the most successful seasons ever. The Yellow Jackets hit .330 as a team, including six regulars who batted .340 or higher, and averaged more than eight runs per game. Georgia Tech was the top hitting team in the 2002 College World Series with a .392 team batting average.

The Yellow Jackets were equally proficient on the basepaths, stealing an ACC-high 130 bases during the season, the highest total at Tech in 18 years.

In 2003, Stricklin helped lead the Yellow Jackets to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship by sweeping North Carolina, Florida State and North Carolina State on the final day of the tournament in the first triple-header in ACC history. Tech averaged nearly eight runs per game, and the Yellow Jackets topped 100 stolen bases for the second consecutive season.

Stricklin’s defensive work with Tech’s catchers paid off as the Yellow Jackets al-lowed just 86 stolen bases in 130 games over two seasons. Tech’s catchers threw out nearly 35 percent of all attempted base stealers.

In 2004, Stricklin helped the Yellow Jackets to a 44-21 record and a return trip to the NCAA Super Regional.

A class-A all-star in 1994, Stricklin played five seasons of minor league baseball, retiring in the spring of 1998 after a major league spring training stint with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Following his selection by the Minnesota Twins in the 23rd round of the June 1993 draft, he played the 1994 and 1995 seasons in the Twins organization, reaching the triple-A level. He signed as a free agent with the Atlanta Braves in 1996, playing double-A ball at Greenville and then with the Tampa Bay organization in 1997.

Stricklin lettered three seasons as a catcher at Kent State for Hall. He earned All-Mid-American Conference honors in 1992 and 1993 and was named to the 1993 NCAA South II Regional All-Tournament team. In those two seasons, he handled pitching staffs ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the nation in earned-run average.

Stricklin graduated magna cum laude from Kent State in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. Stricklin and his wife Cheri have two daughters, Sydney (7) and Keaton (2) and son, Cale (5).

May 1, 1936: Dr. Marion E. “Lefty” Garner, a member of the Kent State Athletic Hall of Fame, threw the first no-hitter in school history, leading the Kent State to a 6-0 victory over Ashland. Garner struck out 24 of the 29 batters faced.

April 17, 1953: Lou Bocci, a member of the Kent State Ath-letic Hall of Fame, threw the first home no-hitter in Golden Flash history. However, Toledo won the game 1-0.

April 23, 1954: Lou Bocci became the first, and still the only, Golden Flash to throw two no-hitters when he hurled a 6-0 win over Marshall. It was the first no-hit win on Kent State’s home field.

May 1, 1982: Lou Caracci faced only one man above the minimum in his 7-0 no-hit performance against Bowling Green. Caracci struck out five and walked two and Rob Goodwin made a fine sliding catch in the seventh inning to preserve the no-hitter. Caracci’s no-hitter came exactly 46 years after the school’s first no-hitter, pitched by Garner.

March 26, 1983: Rick Moyer, in the Flashes’ first game since their spring break, threw Kent State’s fifth no-hitter, defeating Dayton 9-2. Moyer struck out nine Flyers.

March 13, 1987: Freshman Brian Schubert made his first collegiate start a memorable one, no-hitting Youngstown State in the second game of a doubleheader. He faced only two batters above the minimum, striking out three and walking two. Only two pitchers in NCAA history had thrown no-hitters in their first collegiate outing before Schubert’s 6-0 win.

March 29, 1993: Sophomore Travis Miller was a hit batter and a walk away from perfection in the first half of a doubleheader against Wright State. After retiring the first seven batters, Miller hit Rod Miller in the third inning but managed to get the next batter to hit into a double play. A sixth-inning walk of Andy Banks was the only other blemish on Miller’s otherwise perfect game and 1-0 win.

February 25, 1995: Junior Jim Farrell struck out 13 and walked four in a 12-2 seven-inning no-hitter. He struck out the first seven Dayton batters and did not allow a Flyer baserunner past second until the seventh inning.

April 23, 1997: Junior Mike Skeeles struck out three and allowed five walks in a 1-0 no-hit win against Akron. Todd Mezlak, who went to second on a wild pitch in the fourth, was the only Zip to advance past first.

April 10, 2009: Junior Brad Stillings struck out nine and did not allow a walk and hit a batter in Kent State’s 1-0 win over Toledo. Kent State scored its only run in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Ben Klafczynski. Toledo threatened in the bottom of the sixth when the lead-off hit-ter was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on two-straight ground outs, but Stillings escaped unharmed.
