Academic Obligations

• NCAA Divs. I and II require that athletes take a certain number of certified core courses and maintain a 2.0 GPA in those courses

• Test score minimums are determined on a sliding scale – the better the GPA the lower the test scores can be

• NCAA Div. III has no standardized eligibility criteria – utilizes each school’s general admission standards

• NAIA – 2.0 overall GPA, top ½ of class, minimum test scores – 2 out of 3

• NJCAA – high school diploma or GED

NCAA Eligibility Center

• To be considered an eligible D1 or D2 prospect you must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center.

• You should register not later than the completion of your Junior Year.

• At the end of your senior year you must send the clearinghouse your final transcript.

• IF YOU DON’T DO THIS, YOU WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIP MONEY OR PLAY YOUR FIRST YEAR!

• Your counselor should have the forms, or you can register online at: https://web1.ncaa.org/eligibilitycenter/common/ .

• You cannot take an official visit until this task is done.

Know the Rules

Coaches have certain times of the year that they can actively recruit players - generally no contact when you are playing for your High School team.

Understand that until you speak directly with the coach or recruiting coordinator at the college and have a signed letter of intent you need to keep your options open!

Register with the NCAA clearinghouse. This makes you an eligible prospect.

Contact & Evaluation Period

• Rule 13.02.4

• 13.02.4.1 Contact Period. A contact Period is that period of time when it is permissible for authorized athletics department staff members to make in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts and evaluations.

• 13.02.4.2 Evaluation Period. An evaluation period is that period of time when it is permissible for authorized athletics department staff members to be involved in off-campus activities designed to assess the academic qualifications and playing ability of prospects. No in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts shall be made with the prospect during an evaluation period.

• 13.02.4.3 Quiet Period. A quiet period is that period of time when it is permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts only on the member institutions campus. No in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts or evaluations may be made during the quiet period.

• 13.02.4.4 Dead Period. A dead period is that period of time when it is not permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts or evaluations on or off the member institution’s campus or to permit official or unofficial visits by prospects to the institution’s campus. The provision of complimentary admissions to a prospect during a dead period is prohibited, except as provided in Bylaw 13.8.2.5 for a prospect who visits an institution as part of a group. During such a dead period, a coaching staff member may not serve as a speaker at or attend a meeting or banquet at which prospects are in attendance, except as provided in Bylaw 13.1.9.1, and may not visit the prospects’ educational institutions. It remains permissible, however, for an institutional staff member to write or telephone prospects during such a dead period.
