I just get back into my boring blue or grey suit and that’s that. Wrong! A good grey or blue suit is a perfect base, of course, but always make sure to give it your own personal touch. Because the way we dress has more influence than you might think. Whether you like it or not, your clothing communicates. And so, it can have a serious im- pact on your ability to achieve success. Research shows that your appearance influences people’s perception of your authority, trustworthiness, intelligence, financial success and suitability for hire or promotion. Obviously there are the basic rules: wear clean clothes. Follow the dresscode (it’s almost always better to be overdressed than underdressed). Make sure your clothes are not wrinkled. Pay attention to the suit (make sure it fits you per- fectly), but don’t forget about shoes and acces- sories – they are just as important. Summer is over. After some well deserved holiday it is time to get back to the office. Hopefully re-energized and extra moti-

vated. To get you in the right mood we have dedicated this second issue of the Distinctly Dif-ferent Journal to personal style in (and around) the office. Some of you might think: personal style? I just get back into my boring blue or grey suit and that’s that. Wrong! A good grey or blue suit is a perfect base, of course, but always make sure to give it your own personal touch. Because the way we dress has more influence than you might think. Whether you like it or not, your clothing

communicates. And so, it can have a serious im-pact on your ability to achieve success. Pay attention to the suit (make sure it fits you per-fectly), but don’t forget about shoes and acces-sories – they are just as important. Wearing a perfect suit with the wrong tie or with unkempt

shoes will destroy the outfit as a whole. To get you started we’ve selected a few pairs of shoes for you (page 2) and listed some tips to keep them pristine looking (page 3). On page 4 and 5 owner of New Tailor, Roel Wolbrink, talks about the wonderful world of fabrics. Autumn means rain and wind, so we’ve produced an autumn emergency guide with tips and tricks to make sure both your clothes and you survive (page 6). On page 9 you can find our favourite office essentials. For some relaxation after work, get a cocktail from page 12. Good luck out there and don’t forget to enjoy it as well!

Autumn means rain. How shoe trees keep your shoes save.

Now you’ve invested in a pair of nice quality shoes, you

want to keep them that way. The basics are ac-tually a lot simpler than often thought. Proper shoe care starts with cedar shoe trees. Some men think shoe trees are an unneccessary purchase, but it’s the foun-dation of shoe care. The emphasis is on cedar. Aromatic cedar is famous for its natural benefits. When unvarnished, cedar protects the leather, fabric, stitching and soles of your shoes by absorbing moi-sture, salts and acid. And that is exactly what your dress shoes need. All feet sweat throughout the day, and the leather and lining of our shoes absorb that moisture. Over time, this moisture will cause the lining to rot, shoes to smell and the leather to crack. Cedar trees smooth out creases, linings and wrink-les in your shoes. The tree holds a shoe in its pro-per shape, so it dries out correctly. Because of the absorbent nature of cedar it will also dry out the lining of your shoes, so they don’t rot. Another great feature of cedar is its scent – it will make your shoes smell fresh again. So, yes, we understand you’ve just spent a lot of money on your leather shoes and don’t want to

waste more money. But remember: a pair of shoe trees is cheaper than a new pair of shoes. Using shoe trees will not only make your shoes look better, but also last longer.

Don’t waitSo does this mean you need a pair of shoe trees for all your dress shoes? Well, ideally yes. But if you only have a few pairs of shoes you use regurlarly, you might be able to rotate just two or three pairs of shoe trees. Be aware that shoes need a full 24 hours to dry before they can be worn again. So make sure you don’t wear your shoes two days in a row. Of course, the best way to dry them is by using a shoe tree. The most important time to use them is in the hour or two after you’ve worn your shoes. That is the moment they will actually draw out

the moisture and help the shoe return to its original shape. If you wait too long, creases will have manife-sted in the leather already.

After those two hours the trees will mostly retain the shape of your shoes and help with the odor control. The aromatic feature of cedar makes our shoe trees also perfect to use in your less formal footwear. That

is why we developed speci-al Sir Beecs cedar trees for sneakers. Not only do they take care of any unwanted odor and will they keep

your sneakers in shape, they also make your foot-wear collection look quite cool. Especially because of our fitted leather labels with the laser engraved sneaker logo of your choice.

Tips & Tricks

Place the cedar trees in your shoes immediately after taking them off. The leather is still flexible then which makes it easier for the shoe-tree to keep your shoes in the right shape and to smooth out creases, linings and wrinkles.

Do not wear your shoes two days in a row. Wearing your shoes every other day will keep them in better shape.

Lightly scour your cedar shoetrees once a year (use sandpaper with a grit of 200 or higher). That way the cedar shoetree maintains its effectiveness.

If your shoes get wet, put your shoes on their side and let them dry in this position. You can also fill up the shoes with newspapers. Don’t put back the shoetrees before your shoes are dry.

You can wear the most amazing suit, but if you choose the wrong shoes – it all goes up in smoke. Shoes are the foundation of any outfit, so pick them well. Yes, quality shoes are an investment, but – if you take good care of them – they will last longer than several pairs of cheap shoes.

A pair of quality leather shoes might not always be the most fun thing to buy,

but it is the absolute essential to your wardrobe. Some might think people don’t even really notice what seems almost hidden un-der your suit, but if you wear the wrong kind of shoes, they will most definitely. That is why every man should make sure to spend some money on one or two pairs of quality leather shoes. We have a personal preference for the classic English shoes of Loake.

Loake was founded by three bro-thers in 1880 in Kettering, Nort-hamptonshire. Today it is still run by the Loake family. That heritage is at the core of all their shoes. Their special Loake 1880 series is proof of it. This pre-mium range still follows the strict quality guidelines the company put on themselves more than 130 years ago. Using bench-made shoema-king techniques and only the finest quality materials, it is a collection to which many shoemakers can only aspire.

Furthermore, each pair of Loake shoes is made at their Northamp-tonshire factory in England. It is the perfect example of craftsmanship. A pair of Goodyear Welted Loake shoes can take up to eight weeks to make. Some 130 skilled craftsmen, up to 75 shoe parts and over 200 different operations are involved. That truly is the art of shoemaking. The Loake shoes come in all styles and colours, which make them the perfect shoe for any man. Are you looking for a dress shoe that goes with your suit? How about the pre-

mium brogues, Loake Strand. Or the cap toe Loake Aldwych. The elegant wingtip full brogues, Loake Buck-inham, are always a great classic as well. Do you prefer a more casual look? They have a great line of suede chukka boots, Pimlico, or the elegant classic loafer, Whitehall. Loake shoes don’t only look good, they are also very comfortable to wear. The soft calf leather used for the Loake shoes are of the highest quality.www.distinctly-different.com/loake

KING OF FABRIC

roel wolbrink

A shirt is not just a shirt. Shirts come in all shapes and qualities. A refined shirt is made of a refined cloth. Pay attention to the details. New Tailor’s

Roel Wolbrink explains shirts and fabrics.

It all started almost twenty years ago when Roel Wolbrink opened New Tailor in Utrecht,

The Netherlands, with his compa-nion Hans van Goch . Their refined tailored clothing was an immediate success and by now the bespoke tailor has also set up shop in Am-sterdam. What makes New Tailor speci-al? A passion for tailored clothing which ensures the right cut, appeal and comfort for you personally. “A bespoke suit or shirt is often considered a luxury, nonetheless,

we rather view it is as a pleasant necessity. Our advice is obviously tailored to each individual. After all, you are what you wear (at least for others),” explains Wolbrink. While more and more men begin to understand the importance of a good suit, a bespoke shirt is quite often undervalued. A big mistake, according to Wolbrink. Because a good shirt can make any outfit. “Shirts are nowadays quite easily worn with just a pair of trousers. Denim or Oxford are well suited for this purpose. Prints, too, do well without a jacket. Perhaps they are all the better for it. “White shirts forever set the

benchmark, as they can accom-modate almost any match. They can be worn with a jumper, with a suit, or simply with a pair of jeans. The sleeker and thinner the shirt’s fabric, the more formal its appea-rance. Try and make sure that the fabrics you wear match the season. The ideal shirt wardrobe varies from one person to the next. Whi-tes, light blues and a denim, howe-ver, should always be included.“Apart from the colour and print you’d like for your shirt, your choice of cloth will greatly deter-

mine its look and feel. A two-ply shirt has better durability and a better shine than a single ply as the two-ply is a yarn spun of two single strands in such a way that any protruding fibres are tucked in and hence no longer visible. Cloth is woven in several main types of weave: Plain (Poplin, Fill a Fill, Zephyr, Oxford and Pinpoint), Twill (Twill, Honeycomb-Dobby- Marcella) and Satin (Batiste). “Personally I like twill because it’s easy to iron plus it’s clean. Mo-reover, it doesn’t shine through. I like to wear white for all occasions except for weekends. “For a little more casual look I go

for Oxford. Also for weekends alt-hough a jersey is very relaxed and soft. Those are excellent in blue or grey for weekend days. Of course, I have a Jeans shirt as well. Made as a business shirt it combines very easy with all kinds of outfits. “In the summer I like Giro Inglese; an open weave which is very nice to wear. And in this period of year I prefer a linen and cotton combina-tion over 100 percent linen because it is softer.” A quality shirt might be a bit more expensive, but it is definitely an

investment you should consider. It will last longer and look better. The quality of the fabric and the hand-craft will make it stand out. Ma-king a shirt might appear simple, but producing a quality shirt, like Emanuel Berg, involves the aid and assistance of thirty different indivi-duals and as many machines. This includes a severe quality control and removal of any excess threads, a process taking up 140 minutes of effective time. But the result is more than worth it. Our advice? Start with a simple blue or white Oxford or Twill shirt, which goes with anything, and see the difference for yourself.

“A bespoke suit or shirt is often considered a

luxury, nonetheless, we rather view it as

a pleasant necessity”

KEEP THEM DRY

Nothing is more annoying than starting your day soaked. Not only because your clothes

will be wet all day, but also because rain ruins your suit

and shoes. That’s why we love our COVY’S. These rubber

covers for your shoes are the ultimate protection against

rain, mud and snow. They are 100 percent water resistant, so your feet will stay dry – no

matter how bad the weather is. The slip proof sole is also a big

plus: it gives you better grip. So no slipping on your leather soles. Due to the simple and

stylish design the COVY’S can be easily combined with a suit

or casual look.

CLEAN THEM UP

Most people don’t realize it, but the soles of your shoes are

quite vulnerable as well. Rain and dirt affects them as it does the leather upper part

of your shoe. Saphir’s Sole Guard is a protective vegetal oil – especially formulated to

offer the best protection for the exterior of your shoe soles. The

vegetal oil impregnates the leather, preventing salt and

moisture from penetrating the sole.

By nourishing your soles with this 100 percent vegetal oil

you slow down the wear and tear of your soles. Making

your shoes look better and last longer.

GO FOR IT

Even if you’re prepared, shoes will get dirty. Heavy rain, mud and puddles will never do your

shoes any good. You should always make sure to protect your shoes. For instance with

Saphir’s Crème de Soins. This beeswax based shoe

cream is especially intended to care for smooth leather shoes. The Crème de Soins enriches and waterproofs the leather. Of course prevention is better than cure – but if your shoes still get dirty, there is a solu-tion: Saphir leather cleaning

soap. Perfect to clean and pre-pare leather for polishing by

removing dirt and old layers of polish.

Nothing beats the fresh scent of clean laundry.

Once you invest in quality clothing, you want to keep it

in good shape as long as possible. That’s where the eco-friendly line of deter-gent and fabric care, The Laundress comes in. Their special shampoos and sprays preserve your clothing and extend their lifetime. The products can be used on some of your most delicate clothing, like wool and cashmere, enabling you to wash it yourself instead of bringing it to the dry cleaners. The American Gwen Whiting and Lindsey Boyd came up with the idea when they were still young fashion enthusiasts, launching careers in one of the world’s best-dressed cities, New York. As Gwen

and Lindsey invested in building their wardrobes, they were confronted with the frustration of maintai-ning them: replacing pre-maturely worn items and paying painful dry cleaning bills.Beginning in 2002, the pair spent two years re-searching and developing the very elixirs they longed for. Their result is the highly effective, nontoxic line of laundry and home

cleaning products you find in our online store. Each product is carefully crafted to work its magic on a spe-cific fabric or surface with outstanding results.Use wool and cashmere shampoo for your precious sweaters and cardigans or their Stiffen Up spray for the perfect ironing results. handcrafted glovesBeautiful and elegant leather dress gloves for any occassion. That what Hestra stands for. This Swedish family business is known for quality and style. Their unlined models are perfect for autumn weather, to

protect your hands from wind and cold.

I t’s literally all about hand-craft in the Swedish family business Hestra. The compa-

ny has a long history of making the finest ski and casual gloves of the finest materials. Everything that they do today has grown out of the timber forests of the uplands in the village Hestra in the Swedish province of Småland. That is where Martin Magnusson and his family settled and where he began making gloves in 1936. He set up his work-shop in a farmhouse and made gloves for the local lumberjacks.

In 1937, a ski slope was created nearby and as its popularity grew, Magnusson saw a new market for his high quality, durable gloves. His sons became keen skiers and star-ted working in the family business in their teens. Over the years, the word about their gloves spread to places beyond the village of Hestra. Since then, two more generati-ons of the Magnusson family have entered the company; Svante and Claes, who grew up among skis and gloves, and now their sons, as well.Although the brand is popular

worldwide, it is still a true family business. Design and development is done at the headquarters in town. The gloves are manufactured in their own factories and they buy all leather, fabrics, wool and other materials their selves. It gives them control of the production chain and ensures a high level of quality. Their experience, eye for detail and their knowledge of quality fabrics enables them to make perfect fitted, beautiful and long-lasting leather gloves. When unlined, the gloves are perfect for an autumn

day. Whether you go for deerskin or hairsheep leather – they are very flexible and comfortable to wear. A fan of craft? Go for the Jacob gloves; they are hand sewn. That process takes around two hours per pair. It also gives the gloves a great natural look. More interested in something a bit different? Pick the Steve gloves; a great fashion item – inspired by and named after the legendary Steve McQueen. If you prefer a classic look, the Emerson gloves – with a woven cotton pat-tern on the back – are for you.

DARK ‘N STORMY

60 ml dark rum150 ml ginger beer

1 lime (for 30 ml juice and a wedge to garnish)

optional: a splash of sugar water and a slice of ginger

A Dark ‘n Stormy might be the perfect autumn cocktail. The rich taste of the rum and the spicy ginger beer is a joy for cold and rainy days. The key to nailing a Dark ‘n Stormy is the precise ratio between the

spice of the ginger beer and the richness of the rum. Depending on which brands you use, you may want to play around with

the proportions. Combine the rum, the ginger beer, and the lime juice in a glass full of ice cubes. Stir.Garnish with a lime wedge.

OLD FASHIONED

1 sugar cubea splash of bitter (such as

Angostura)A soft Irish whisky

OrangeClub Soda

If there is one cocktail every man should know how to make

it’s the Old Fashioned. The cocktail dates back to 1880

(they called it Old Fashioned even back then). A drink that has sugar, bitters, spirit, and orange peel. A drink that is

elegant, timeless and makes a powerful statement.

Add the sugar to the bottom of a large tumbler. Then pour in

the bitters and soda. Stir gently. Add ice, and pour in the whisky, stirring it all together. Garnish

with an orange wedge.

GIN TONIC

50 ml Gin Mare120 ml tonic

squeeze of lime juicelime wedge to garnish

2 thyme sprigs

A Gin Tonic is always a good idea. But instead of going for the standard version of this

classic drink, why not spice it up a bit?

This version of the Gin Tonic is made for autumn, fresh but spicy and with a lovely taste. You can also try it with other herbs like basil or rosemary.

Fill a glass of your choice with ice cubes. Pour in the gin and

top up with tonic. Stir the whole thing and garnish with a lime

wedge and some thyme sprigs.
