BASIC RIGHTS OREGON 2012 ANNUAL REPORT Friends, I’ve never been more proud or more excited to be a part of the fight for equality across Oregon and across the country. During 2012, Basic Rights Oregon and Basic Rights Education Fund took on the tough fights and won. And we’re not slowing down. We helped win the freedom to marry for our neighbors in Washington. We elected (and re-elected) equality champions across the state. We won trans inclusive health care for countless Oregonians. We built alliances within Native American communities where we are helping to increase equity and visibility for two spirit/LGBT native families. None of this could have happened without supporters like yourself. We have built a politically powerful voice and we are creating meaningful change in the lives of LGBT Oregonians. Together, there is no limit to what we can accomplish. Yours in solidarity, Jeana Frazzini Executive Director, Basic Rights Oregon

Friends,

I’ve never been more proud or more excited to be a part of the fight for

equality across Oregon and across the country.

During 2012, Basic Rights Oregon and Basic Rights Education

Fund took on the tough fights and won. And we’re not slowing down.

We helped win the freedom to marry for our neighbors in Washington.

We elected (and re-elected) equality champions across the state. We won

trans inclusive health care for countless Oregonians. We built alliances

within Native American communities where we are helping to increase

equity and visibility for two spirit/LGBT native families.

None of this could have happened without supporters like yourself. We

have built a politically powerful voice and we are creating meaningful

change in the lives of LGBT Oregonians. Together, there is no limit to

what we can accomplish.

Yours in solidarity,

Jeana Frazzini

Executive Director, Basic Rights Oregon

FOR MaRRiage equalityOur Trans Justice program priorities are set by the Trans Justice Working Group, a volunteer team of community leaders. In 2012, we worked with businesses across the state to remove barriers to medically-necessary health care, and with Oregon’s Insurance Division to issue a historic bulletin making it clear that there is no place for discrimination in private insurance plans in this state. In 2013, we will ensure that these historic wins are implemented and that statewide public insurance plans remove discriminatory exclusions. Basic Rights Oregon successfully expanded support for the freedom to marry and built our political power in 2012 by working to win the freedom to marry in Washington, elect a pro-equality majority in the Oregon legislature and main-tain LGBT champions in critical statewide offices. Thanks to our volunteers, we built one of the most powerful political action programs we’ve ever run! This year, we’re launching our 2014 campaign for the freedom to marry by building support in communities across Oregon.

Our Mission: to ensure that all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Oregonians experience equality by building a broad and politically powerful movement, shifting public opinion, and achieving policy victories.

In 2012, our Racial Justice program worked with Native families to create a new Our Families video highlighting Two Spirit/LGBT Native Americans. We collabo-rated with Indigenous Ways of Knowing on a Tribal Equity Toolkit, and worked with Portland PFLAG Black Chapter and Urban League of Portland on a first-of-its-kind report on the experiences of Black LGBT Oregonians. In 2013, we are providing strong support to our partners to advance key racial justice policy priorities, recruiting hundreds of new volunteers and engaging more LGBT Or-egonians in our shared struggle for justice.
