Last season, for the first time since 2004-2005, the Lady Wolves failed to qualify for the MACJC State Tournament. A 0-4 start in division play would end up being the undoing of Co-Lin. The Lady Wolves finished 9-1 in their last 10 division games, yet still missed out on snagging the No. 4 seed in the tournament. Three teams finished with identical 10-4 records in the South while Co-Lin and Southwest tied with 9-5 records. Many people, Co-Lin head coach Gwyn Young among them, thought the wording of the tiebreaker in the rulebook meant that Co-Lin had secured a playoff birth. Alas, the Lady Wolves were left outside looking in, but they did qualify for the Region 23 tournament. In the region tournament, Co-Lin started off with a 63-58 upset of No. 1 seed and state tournament champion Jones. The Lady Wolves dropped a 78-70 defeat to Baton Rouge in the semifinals and ended their season with a 17-8 record and wins over state champion Jones, region champion Baton Rouge, and region runner up Southwest.

Banks and Gibson return scoring load Co-Lin only returns three sophomore guards in 2014-2015, but in doing so they bring back one of the best in the MACJC and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), Claresa Banks. Banks led the team in scoring, rebounding, steals, and blocked shots in 2013-2014. Her greatest assets might be the type of things that can’t be measured with statistics, a huge heart and prizefighter-like toughness. Super sub Tyra Gibson also returns as a sophomore. Gibson led the team in oooh and aaah moments in 2013-2014, especially when she used her crossover to make defenders look silly.

Kentija Tarleton is the third returning guard and possesses explosive athleticism and an improved jump shot. The transfer of Arnissayur Robinson from the University of Mobile will also bolster the frontcourt. Robinson is a high-energy player who Co-Lin recruited out of high school at Raymond. The freshman class of guards knows what it takes to win as multiple players won championships while in high school. Point guard Alexis Collins was a leader on two state title teams at Forest Hill High, Jamilah Sanders ran the point guard spot on a state title team at Canton High, and Tenazhia Hinkeson was a leader on one of the best Pearl High teams in recent years.

Lumpkin fully healthy When not battling injuries, sophomore forward Caroline Lumpkin started every game in 2013-2014 at the power forward position. Lumpkin, a cerebral player who does a little bit of everything for her team, is joined by the player most likely to sub her out last season, Maleah Issac. Isaac was part of the front line rotation and saw action in nearly every game as the first post sub off of the bench. Isaac is strong, tough, and never shy about diving on the floor when her team needs it. Co-Lin will additionally count on frontline help from sophomore transfer Toni Woods who comes to Wesson after playing last season at NJCAA member school Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas. The freshman forwards are some of the tallest players on the team as Kybri Keyes (5-10), Kelley Allen (5-11), and Kristal Flowers (6-0) will all be counted on to win the physical low post battles night in and night out in the MACJC. Keyes and Allen were a dynamic duo as high school seniors last season at Puckett. The tandem helped the Puckett Lady Wolves hold down a No. 1 state ranking for a majority of the season. Flowers,

who has shown exceptional physicality for a newcomer, comes to Wesson after a standout career at Collins High.

Williams wins big in recruiting Gwyn Young will be the first to tell you, great players are essential to being a good coach. Of all the great players signed by Young during his time in Wesson, none may be bigger than Nikki Williams. As a player, Williams led Co-Lin to a two year combined record of 50-13, a Region 23 championship, and a sixth place finish in the NJCAA National Tournament, however her contribution to the program doesn’t end there. Williams, entering her third season as an assistant coach, is coming into her own as a recruiter. One only has to look at the freshman class assembled this year in Wesson to realize that. All of them were some level of All-District, All-Region, All-State, All-Star, or state champion while in high school. The layout of the MACJC changed greatly a few years ago when recruiting districts were abolished. Before that, the Lady Wolves had been blessed with one of the most fertile recruiting areas in the state. Co-Lin has become a recruiting force in the Jackson metro area behind the work of Williams. Of 13 players on the Co-Lin roster, six of them were named All-Metro by The Clarion Ledger at some point in their career.

Lady Wolves at the Next Level Co-Lin had two members of the 2013-2014 team sign to further their careers, Jessica Wilson with Mississippi Valley State and Ashley Minor with Mississippi College. Former Co-Lin point guard Chanta Poole will be a member of the Grambling University Lady Tigers in 2014-2015. Former Lady Wolf Tiffany Sims will be a senior for the William Carey Lady Crusaders. Brookhaven Academy product and former Lady Wolf Laura Beth Wright is a member of the University of Mobile Lady Rams. In their second game of the season, Wright and Mobile will take on one of her former Co-Lin teammates, Vintrice Briggs. Briggs is now a student-athlete at Xavier University in New Orleans. Last season Briggs and Wright both helped their teams make an appearance in the NAIA National Tournament. Former Lady Wolf Lavasha Allen also helped her team, Wiley College, make a NAIA National Tournament appearance in 2013-204. Allen will be a senior this season for the Lady Wildcats.

MACJC South Division will be tough It’s been a while since the South Division of the MACJC has been as good as it was in 2013-2014. Co-Lin, Meridian, Southwest, Jones, and Pearl River waged a battle for the four state tournament playoff spots. The five division losses for Co-Lin came by five, five, ten, three, and three points. The stakes to win the south division are even higher in 2014-2015, as the division winner earns the right to host the MACJC State Tournament. Hosting the tournament can be the difference in winning and losing a gold ball, as Co-Lin knows firsthand. The 2011 MACJC State Tournament was held in Wesson after the Lady Wolves earned the right to host with a division title. Co-Lin won a tough semifinal game over Itawamba and picked up

an 85-77 win over Jones in the title game. The outcome of both those games was in question late and Co-Lin played with the confidence that comes from being in your home gym. Co-Lin returns 34.6 points per game scoring, which is one of the reasons the Lady Wolves are picked to finish among the division leaders in 2014-2015. Co-Lin was tabbed as the preseason No. 2 team in Region 23 by voting conducted by the NJCAA.

Young continues winning tradition In 1981 the price of a postage stamp was 18 cents, Ronald Reagan was running the country, and the Co-Lin Lady Wolves posted their last losing record. It has been 32 seasons since that team finished 7-16. In those 32 seasons Co-Lin has finished with double digit losses only three times. The one constant through it all has been the leadership of coach Gwyn Young. While some coaches coast towards retirement late in their career, there is no letup in sight for Young. He still spends hours each week breaking down film and planning practice. He still travels to far-flung high school gymnasiums during weeknights in the winter as he searches for the next crop of recruits. He still rides the bus, eats the sack lunches, and experiences the late nights and early mornings of the season along with his players. The Lady Wolves don’t win because they have some secret drill or system. The team wins with great effort and that effort swells from the allegiance Young creates in his players. The players see the gold balls in his office, they know about the tradition, and they don’t want to let their coach down. Very good players, giving maximum effort, and being led by Gwyn Young, that’s been the Lady Wolves way since 1975.

Moral victories are something that no coach cares for and Copiah-Lincoln head basketball coach Kenny Bizot is no exception. That being said, you couldn’t fault anyone associated with the Wolves basketball program for being encouraged by the results of the 2013-2014 season, 9-14 record withstanding, especially when you examine the adversity the team faced to get there. On January 27, the Wolves took a home loss, 70-56, at the hands of Pearl River. The loss evened Co-Lin’s record to 8-8 with seven regular season games remaining. Co-Lin had nicely rebounded from a 0-3 start, helped in part by a five-game winning streak that preceded the Pearl River game. Things would change greatly after the Pearl River game as an off-court incident resulted in a season long suspension for six of the 11 players on the roster. In their next game Co-Lin was forced to take on a nationally ranked Gulf Coast with only five players dressed out. The Wolves lost valiantly in overtime, 78-76, to the Bulldogs in a game that no one in Wesson will soon forget. Co-Lin was able to add another player to their active roster from the practice floor and played the final six games of the season with only one substitute each night. The six-man roster suffered some cruel defeats, losing at

the buzzer to East Central and Hinds and dropping a three-point defeat at Pearl River, but Wolves did take a thrilling win, 75-73, over Meridian. Of the 14 losses suffered by Co-Lin in 2013-2014, nine of them came by six points or less.

Morris to lead youthful backcourt Guard Terry Morris, one of only three sophomores on the roster, will be expected to be the leader of the backcourt in 2014-2015. Morris was primarily a point guard as a freshman and gained valuable experience in running Bizot’s set based offense. Morris can also score the ball and shoots it well from outside. His team will need him to do both of those things well as the young Wolves gain their footing early in the season. A large group of freshmen guards bring a little bit of everything, except experience, to the 2014-2015 Wolves. Darrius Kennedy and Donovan Rice are two newcomers who have both played the point guard position for high-level programs in high school, Jim Hill and Picayune respectively. Dearius Griffin carried a large scoring load at Natchez High and can get hot from downtown. Josh Washington is a strong physical guard who has a college ready body. Shemar Williams is one of the best jumpers on the team and showed he can guard bigger or smaller players while at McComb High. Joe Shelby is older, wiser, and stronger than most of his teammates after

initially playing college football after graduating high school in 2010.

Lumpkins among athletic front line After a year in Wesson it has become apparent that Bizot favors athletic forwards who can do a little bit of everything as opposed to wide bodies that set down anchors in the paint. His first signee who fits that mold, Jordan Lumpkins, returns for a sophomore season in which much will be expected from him. Lumpkins showed in 2013-2014 that he can mix it up in the paint and put unsuspecting opponents on a poster with a dunk. The southpaw New Orleans native brings a level of eagerness and is open to coaching in a way that sets a great example for his younger teammates. Co-Lin has only one transfer on the roster, but it’s a big one, as sophomore Lucas Burris comes to Wesson after spending his freshman season at Mississippi College. Burris will surely be a crowd favorite as the always supportive West Lincoln faithful never fail to show up and cheer on one of their alums. Burris possesses wide shoulders and a workman like attitude in the post, two qualities needed by the team. The freshman trio of Chris Williams, Terik Richardson, and JaDarius Haymer are the type of guys who impress you even in lay-up lines. All long and athletic, they’ll all get an opportunity to run the floor as Bizot rarely stops his team from pushing the ball. Donte’ Watson comes to Co-Lin after a highly decorated high school career in New Orleans and has impressed his teammates and coaches in the preseason with his skills. De’Archie Stewart, playing just a short drive from his roots in south Jackson, is the type of banger that every successful team needs. Tyler Turner has shown in the preseason that scoring won’t be a problem for him as a freshman, something the team will badly need as they seek to replace nearly all of the points per game from 2013-2014.

Reed comes home to coach Bizot didn’t only have to replace players in the offseason as his long time assistant, Justin Henley, exited Wesson after one season with the Wolves. Henley accepted the head coaching position at Petal High School after previously coaching with Bizot at Jackson Prep, University of Texas at Tyler, and Co-Lin. The bond for Bizot and Henley goes all the way back to when Henley suited up for Mississippi College while Bizot was an assistant coach. Bizot made a popular hire in Wesson when he brought in a former Wolf, Jake Reed, to fill the position on his staff. Reed was a standout player for Co-Lin from 2010-2012, averaging 9.4 points and 3.1 rebounds per game and being selected for the MACJC All-Star game as a sophomore. Reed played two more seasons at William Carey after leaving Wesson and recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Health, P.E. and Recreation.

Reed has already been impressive with his leadership in the weight room. A lifter himself, the young coach has pushed the team and seen gains from each member.

Wolves at the next level As always there are a handful of former Wolves continuing their college careers at colleges and universities around the country. Former Wolves Jay Case and Eric Smith will be teammates again this season as they both suit up for the Mississippi College Choctaws. Michael Vardaman, a MACJC All-Star last season, now plays at Fisk University (Nashville, Tenn.). Former Co-Lin point guard Anthony Davis will suit up for the East Texas Baptist University Tigers this season. Chris Miller, a Vicksburg High graduate who last played at Co-Lin in 2012, will be a member of the Alcorn State Braves this season. Former Co-Lin guard Joseph Cunningham will be a member of the William Carey Crusaders in 2014-2015. Former Co-Lin big man Fred Fairman will play his senior season in 2014-2015 at Rust College after transferring from Wiley College (Texas). Michael Campbell, a high flyer who last played at Co-Lin in 2010, will suit up as a senior this season at College of Faith in West Memphis, Arkansas. Former Wolf and Natchez High product Kelli Puckett is now playing for the Tougaloo Bulldogs after spending a few years in the military. He’ll be joined at Tougaloo by another player who once suited up for Co-Lin, Marshun McGee.

Former Co-Lin point guard Tadavius Williams is currently playing professional basketball in Bolivia. His teammate while at Co-Lin, All-State forward Greg “Spud” Truvillion, is now playing for a team in Italy after previously spending time in Argentina. They join a growing list of former Co-Lin players who have played international basketball of late. That list includes Rob Wallace (Romania), Lawanski Newsome (Mongolia), Jeremy Richardson (Italy), and Thomas Terrell (France).

MACJC best in the country last season The Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) had a historical season in 2013-2014 when the men’s basketball national championship tournament ended with the Jones Bobcats taking the title. A MACJC team had never won the national championship before then and with restrictions on how many out of state players can suit up on a roster, there were many who thought it would never happen. Just to show you how deep the league was last season, consider this, Meridian, the only team Co-Lin beat after their roster was shortened, won a game late in the season at home over the eventual national champion Bobcats. Co-Lin will begin the 2014-2015 season with their usual plate of non-division games against the likes of Delta, Holmes, Baton Rouge, and Delgado. The Wolves will also face tough early season competition at the Southwest tournament when they play Northwest and Southern-Shreveport. One thing the Wolves can take solace in is that their 12 freshman roster won’t be the only youth filled squad in the MACJC. Jones returns more experienced players than anyone else in the conference, indicative of why they are a popular pick to be at the top of the league.

Bizot demands accountability and toughness Bizot enters his second season with a much firmer hold on what it takes to win night in and out in the MACJC.

Always known as a player’s coach, he demands his teams defend, rebound, and play with effort above all else. His coaching style on defense is tied down to neither man nor zone, but whatever works best against the opponent that night. Offensively, he gives his players the ability to create while staying within an organized system. He’ll rarely pull a player from a game for missing a shot, but quickly will call for a sub when one of his men fails to show effort in rebounding. Men, it’s the preferred inflection used by Coach Bizot when describing his team. He doesn’t call them boys, he calls them men. Treating them like men and holding them accountable on and off the court while showing caring and love, that’s how
