The Historic Downtown of Zapopan houses the buildings with which the municipality has gained cultural prestige and has become a central point for the catholic faith in the western region of the country.

Paseo peatonal, tranquilo y fresco que lleva del Arco del ingreso a la Plaza de las Américas y a la Basílica de la Virgen de Zapopan, donde encontrará una variedad de restaurantes, cafés y bares para pasar la tarde y disfrutar de las actividades culturales que ahí se llevan a cabo.

A pedestrian promenade ornamented, a calm and cool walk that takes you from the entrance Arch to the Plaza of the Americas and the Basilica of the Virgin of Zapopan, where you can find a variety of restaurants, cafes and bars; to enjoy the afternoon and the cultural activities available.

MUSEO DE ARTE (MAZ)/ ART MUSEUM OF ZAPOPAN (MAZ)

El Museo de Arte de Zapopan (MAZ), fundado en el año 2002, se encuentra ubicado sobre el andado 20 de Noviembre. El MAZ es la única institución pública dedicada exclusivamente al arte contemporáneo en Jalisco y presenta exposiciones temporales de acervos significativos y proyectos desarrollados ex profeso para sus espacios.

The Museo de Arte de Zapopan (MAZ), founded in 2002, enjoys a privileged location, to one side of the Basilica of Our Lady of Zapopan. The MAZ, is the only public institution in Jalisco devoted exclusicely to contemporary art. It has distinguished itself by presenting temporary exhibitions of significant work and of projects created especially for the museum´s spaces.

PALACIO MUNICIPAL DE ZAPOPAN/ MUNICIPAL PALACE OF ZAPOPAN

De estilo neocolonial que albergó originalmente a la escuela primaria “Franklin D. Roosvelt” que data de 1942. Construido a base de cantera gris y utilizando como sede del poder municipal a partir de 1968. En su interior destacan la fuente central - con un vertedero de agua en forma de mazorca de maíz y en la segunda planta, una muestra del arte muralístico mexicano: el mural “La Revolución Universal”, ejecutado por Guillermo Cháves Vega en 1970.A Mexican Neocolonial building that originally sheltered the Franklin D. Roosevelt Elementary School and dates back to 1942, built with grey quarry stone and used as a setting for the municipal power since 1968. On the inside out stands a central fountain -with a corncob shaped spillway and a mural called “La Revolución Universal” The Universal Revolution, work of Guillermo Chávez-Vega in 1970.

PARROQUIA DE SAN PEDRO APÓSTOL/ PARISH OF SAN PEDRO APOSTOL

La parroquia de San Pedro Apóstol es una construcción de estilo neoclásico y de techos de piedra pómez, se ubica a un costado del Palacio Municipal y frente a la Plaza de las Américas. El templo original de una sola nave fue terminado en 1819, al cual recientemente se le han agregado dos naves transversales con el propósito de aumentar su capacidad. En su interior alberga “El bautismo de Jesús” pieza realizada en el siglo VXII por el pintor Juan Correa.

The parish of San Pedro Apostol is a building of neoclassic style and pumice stone ceilings is located next to the Municipal Palace and in front of the Plaza of the Americas. The original single bay temple was finished in 1819 and recently 2 cross-bays added in order to increase its capacity. On the inside you can find the “Bautismo de Jesus”, The Baptism of Jesus; a painting made in the XVII Century by Juan Correa.

MUSEO DE ARTE HUICHOL WIXARIKA/ HUICHOL WIXARIKA ART MUSEUM

El Museo de Arte Huichol ofrece al visitante una exhibición permanente de arte y artesanías elaboradas por este interesante grupo étnico. Así mismo se venden en el lugar algunas publicaciones que exponen la cultura de los huicholes y otros grupos étnicos, así como souvenirs. (Tel. 01 33 3636 4430).

The Huichol Museum of Art offers visitors a permanent exhibition of works of art and handicrafts made by this interesting ethnic group. They also sell some publications related to the Huichol culture and other ethnic groups as well as souvenirs. (Tel. + 52 3636 4430)

PLAZA DE LAS AMÉRICAS, JUAN PABLO II / “PLAZA DE LAS AMÉRICAS

JUAN PABLO II” SQUARESe ubicada frente a la Basílica de Zapopan con un kiosco con cúpula de cobre, donde puedes disfrutar de diversas actividades culturales. En el extremo sur erigen 29 astas alineadas, que representan a los países de América Continental y algunos del Caribe, de ahí surge el primer nombre de la Plaza de las Américas, el segundo es en honor al entonces representante de iglesia católica, además en este lugar puedes encontrar las esculturas de Centeotl (diosa de maíz) y Teopitzintli (dios niño).

Is located in front of the Basilica de Zapopan, with a copper dome kiosk, place where you can enjoy various cultural activities. On the extreme south side of the square there are 29 flagpoles representing the countries of Continental America and the Caribbean from witch it takes its first name, the second is in honor by then the catholic church representative, in addition, in this place you can find the sculptures of Centeotl (goddess of corn) and Teopiltzintli (Child god).

EL COLEGIO DE JALISCO/ COLLEGE OF JALISCO

Espacio dedicado a la investigación, la docencia y la difusión de la cultura regional e instalado en 1992 en la Cabecera Municipal de Zapopan. El Colegio de Jalisco cuenta ahora con un nuevo edificio para su biblioteca, que aloja gran cantidad de materiales donados por el historiador Miguel W. Mathew, por quien lleva su nombre.

LA ROMERIA/ THE PILGRIMAGE

La Romería es una peregrinación religiosa que tiene lugar cada año el día 12 de octubre. La virgen de Zapopan sale de su santuario para visitar las iglesias y parroquias de la zona metropolitana, regresando a la Basílica de Zapopan desde la Catedral Metropolitana de Guadalajara en un desfile multitudinario justo el día 12 de octubre. La peregrinación es una tradición que remonta a 1734. Durante el recorrido se pueden ver danzas de diferentes regiones del país, acompañados de casi 2 millones de peregrinos.

The Romería is a religious pilgrimage that takes place each year on octuber 12th, the Virgin of Zapopan leaves the sanctuary to visit the churches and parishes of the metropolitan area starting on May 20th and returns in a triumphant and multitudinous pilgrimage on October 12th from the Metropolitan Cathedral to her shrine. The pilgrimage is a tradition that dates back to 1734. During the tour you can see Indian dancers from different regions of the country accompanied by almost 2 million pilgrims.

La Ruta Franciscana consta de un conjunto arquitectónico de capillas edificadas durante los siglos XVII y XVIII, legado histórico que dejaron los frailes franciscanos en el municipio.

The Franciscan Route consists of an architectural complex of chapels built during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, historical legacy left by the Franciscan friars.

La Basílica de la Virgen de Zapopan es un edificio religioso construido originalmente en 1690. Es uno de los centros religiosos más importantes del occidente del país debido a que cobija la imagen de la virgen de Zapopan. Desde 1734, cada año es visitada por más de 2 millones de personas en su tradicional Romería.

The Basilica of the virgin of Zapopan is a religious building built originally in 1690. This is one of the most important religious centers of the west of the country since it houses the image of the Virgin of Zapopan. Since 1734, each year is visited by more than 2 million people in its traditional Pilgrimage.

Es un monumento de tipo colonial que mide más de 20 metros de altura. Fue diseñado por el Arq. Guillermo González Ibarra, su esposa, la escultora Ma. Del Carmen Rábago de González , ejecutó las hermosas esculturas y relieves que adornan el arco por ambos lados y que dan a conocer con su simbolismo la historia y tradiciones de Zapopan.

A colonial style monument with more than 20 meters high. Designed by Architect Guillermo González Ibarra, and his wife, sculptor Ma. del Carmen Rábago de González, who made the beautiful sculptures and engravings that ornament the arch on both sides and that tell the story of the traditions of Zapopan.
