BY CATHARIN SHEPARD Staff writer Returning to the coal mine where he and other prisoners of war were forced to labor in dangerous conditions with the threat of death hanging over their heads not only brought back memories for World War II veteran John Mims, it gave him the chance to get an apology for what he and thousands of other POWs suffered. Mims, a Bataan Death March survivor, was one of seven Ameri- can veterans given an all-expenses- paid trip to Japan last fall as part of efforts of the Japanese gov- ernment to heal old wounds and foster friendship between the two countries. During the trip Mims and the other veterans toured the country, giving talks about their experi- ences and visiting places they remembered from their time in the country as POWs. Mims, who lied about his age in order to enlist in the military as a teenager, was one of the thousands of soldiers captured in the Philip- pines and forced to march for miles under hellish conditions. Mims saw many of his fellow soldiers die along the way and also suffered beatings that smashed his teeth and broke his bones. He survived the march only to be put in a work camp in a rural part of Japan, forced to labor in a coal mine before the Allied Forces came to the rescue. This time around, Mims and the other veterans got a much dif- ferent welcome when they stepped off the plane. A line of excited schoolchildren, waving flags with the American stars and stripes on one side and Japan’s national flag on the other, were eager to hug the men and their families and take pictures with them. For the first time in more than half a century, Mims had the chance to return to the coal mine where he and other POWs were forced to work. The mine was shut down and closed off many years ago, but the gates are still there – and a nearby monument marking the location of the POW camp and memorializing the people who died there proved to be the scene of an unlikely meeting. A man with the last name of Yamamoto greeted Mims and told a surprising tale. “Him and his two brothers lived next door to the prison where I was at, and they used to watch the Japa- nese beat us, and they knew how bad they mistreated us,” Mims said. Even decades later, and now an older man himself, Yamamoto remembered the events of the war and what Mims and his fellow POWs did for the local community after the Allied Forces claimed vic- tory over the Axis Powers. “When I got planes to bring food into us and drop food into the camp, we distributed some food to the different families there that didn’t have husbands – they were all killed in the war,” Mims said. The unexpected reunion was an emotional one as Yamamoto came up to Mims and told him the story. His family was one that got much-needed food to survive when Mims and the other POWs decided to share their supplies with the local women and children. “We hugged each other and cried. He’s a white-headed guy now, he recognized me before I did him,” Mims said. Another unexpected moment came when an official with the Japa- nese government met with Mims and the other veterans. For the first time Mims could ever recall, the official offered an apology for what he and the other POWs suffered. The trip also gave Mims the chance to continue sharing his his- tory with others. In a moment that surprised them both, Mims and his wife met another American in the lobby of their hotel.A businessman from Texas named Bill Templeton took one of Mims’ cards, talked to him about his story, and imme- diately offered to sponsor Mims’ annual trip to the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, where military members and civil- ians join forces to remember and honor the fallen and the survivors of the Bataan Death March. “He turns around and says I can sponsor you,” Mims said. “When we got back here I said to my wife call him, see if he was kidding.” When Mims called the busi- nessman, Templeton turned out to be as good as his word. Returning to the coal mine where he and other prisoners of war were forced to labor in dangerous conditions with the threat of death hanging over their heads not only brought back memories for World War II veteran John Mims, it gave him the chance to get an apology for what he and thousands of other POWs suffered.

Mims, a Bataan Death March survivor, was one of seven Ameri-can veterans given an all-expenses-paid trip to Japan last fall as part of efforts of the Japanese gov-ernment to heal old wounds and foster friendship between the two countries.

During the trip Mims and the other veterans toured the country, giving talks about their experi-ences and visiting places they remembered from their time in the country as POWs.

Mims, who lied about his age in order to enlist in the military as a teenager, was one of the thousands of soldiers captured in the Philip-pines and forced to march for miles under hellish conditions. the other veterans got a much dif-ferent welcome when they stepped off the plane.

“Him and his two brothers lived next door to the prison where I was at, and they used to watch the Japa-nese beat us, and they knew how bad they mistreated us,” Mims said.

Have you ever thought about spending quality time with your mate but worry about leaving the children with a babysitter? There are lots of articles and books that guide the first-time sitters but not very many for parents. The best babysit-ting experience for your children begins with you, the parent.

It is our responsibility as parents to make sure that not only is the sit-ter we use competent and prepared but that our children know what to expect. Parents should take time before the sitter’s arrival to set ex-pectations and safety guidelines with the children. Tell the children what they can expect from the sitter – the sitter will interact with them and be there to take care of them while you are out. If possible, set up a meeting with the sitter prior to the babysitting event so that they can be introduced to the children. During this meeting, the sitter can learn some important

information about the children such as their temperament and their routines.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has these guidelines for parents:

• Meet and check references as well as training that the sitter may have had such as CPR and First Aid in advance.

• Make sure the sitter is at least 13 years of age and mature in case there is an emergency.

• Show the sitter around the home indicating potential problem areas and escape routes in case of a fire or gas leak; inform the sitter to leave the house and go to a neighbor’s house

to call 911.• Discuss routines your child

has to include feeding, diapering, bathing, and sleeping. Also, discuss any specific needs such as medica-tions the children may be taking or allergies.

• Make sure there is an emergency kit available that includes a flash-light, first aid chart, and supplies.

• If there are guns in the home, put them unloaded into a locked cabinet.

Because all of us have problems remembering simple facts when we are under stress or upset, write important information down and place it beside the telephone or on the refrigerator where the sitter can easily see it. Include the parent’s full name, address and both home and cell phone numbers. Other in-formation that needs to be included is the name of the children’s doctor and phone number, the number for

Corrie Haskins, daughter of Al and Yvonne Haskins of Hoke County, is in need of votes. Now living in Australia, she is competing in a competition for buskers—street performers.

A student at Hillsong Inter-national Leadership College in Sydney, Australia, Haskins grew up in Hoke County and was involved in the Hole County 4-H program, even serving as the North Carolina State 4-H president. She attended Sandhills Community College as a dual enrolled high school student and then went on to graduate from UNC-Greensboro with honors degrees in music and fashion.

After college, Haskins worked for the North Carolina Coopera-tive Extension Service in Scotland County as a 4-H agent and then as a violin teacher at the Cape Fear Christian Academy of Dunn, before leaving for Sydney in 2012. She was the principal violinist of Manna Church in Fayetteville for six years, and feeling it was a calling that she had to follow, she left for Australia in 2012. She plays on the worship team for the school and for many of the 12 church services held weekly. The church draws about 21 thousand members every week.

Planning to stay only for one year, she quickly changed her mind after being there for only a few months. To support herself, she is a regular busker at the local mall. The Rouse Hill Town Centre provides places for buskers to play each week. Haskins is a favorite and makes enough money to pay her rent and expenses. She also teaches private violin students.

Recently the mall sponsored a “Battle of the Buskers” competition and Haskins quickly signed up. The competition is open now until April 6 and the winner will receive gift certificates worth over $3000. The

first one is to the local music store and would provide much needed equipment for her electric violin that she plays at the church. Also, the mall, where she buys groceries, is offering a $1000 gift certificate.

To help Haskins win the competi-tion go to the website:

http://www.rhtc.net.au/bat-tleofthebuskers/index.php?

You may also navigate to Face-book and search for “Rouse Hill Town Centre” and then click on the right hand box that says “Battle of the Buskers”—Vote Now. A bar will come up where you type 4 and click vote. It’s that simple.

You can see the Buskers and hear them play by clicking on their picture. Haskins is on page four and is number four.

poison control, and a contact number for where the parents will be. Also, indicate times for meals or snacks, bed, and when you expect to be home. Notify a neighbor or nearby relative that you are going to be out for the evening and that a sitter will be with the children. Give the sitter the name and phone number of the neighbor or relative so they will be able to contact them if they are needed. In case of an emergency, the neighbor or relative may be able to get to your home before you can.

You may want to plan some ac-tivities that the sitter can do with your child such as watching a specific age-appropriate movie or television

show, board games that they can play, or puzzles. You may also want to inform the sitter what snack food your child can have.

When you are leaving, don’t be in such a big rush that you forget to tell the children bye and you will be back. Make sure that you have reviewed specific instructions and answered any questions that the sitter may have. Encourage the sitter to call if they have questions or problems. Remember that the sitter’s job is to take care of your child while you are away.

Parents As Teachers believe that all parents want to be good parents and we are here to support you. The Parents As Teachers Program has certified parent educators who are available to provide information on your developing child and to help you to become your child’s first, best and most influential teacher. If you are interested in the Parents As Teachers Program, please contact us at (910) 875-2000 or stop by the NC Cooperative Extension office at 116 West Prospect Avenue, located next to Turlington School.

Can faith in God enhance your health and well-being? Recently, several doctors have written books advocating spirituality’s health benefits, and top medical journals have published articles exploring the topic.

Though medicine remains firm-ly anchored in science, through

the years, faith exhibited by patients has time and again confounded medical experts and helped restore lives.

What a wonderful truth to consider this sea-son.
