But it takes persistence. It takes determination. It takes facing your fears and doing that which is hard and necessary, instead of what is quick and easy. It takes skipping the mythical shortcuts and using our imagination as a map and preview of life’s coming attractions.” Let us choose to continue practicing Growth Mindset. Let us choose to show Grit. Let us choose to be Great! #GRITtobeGREAT! Let this be our commitment and battle cry this year. If we keep true to this, AY 2017-2018 will definitely be a “GRIT” year for all of us. School Opening Message from the Principal

!

“God has planted greatness in you. Let today be the beginning of a great

adventure as you step into the gifts He’s given you.” ~ Joyce Meyer

On behalf of the Management, faculty, and staff of Stonyhurst Southville

International School (S.S.I.S.) Batangas Campus, I would like to welcome everyone to

Academic Year 2017-2018! For the new students and parents, welcome to the Valiant

Knights Family! You had made the right choice in choosing S.S.I.S. to be your second

home and family. For the returning students and parents, we missed you so much.

Welcome back home and thank you for renewing your partnership with us. This year

promises to be a GREAT one for all of us as we all embrace GROWTH MINDSET and GRIT

through the 5Cs!

As we begin a new journey, I exhort everyone to sustain the practice of a

growth mindset by continuing to believe that with a lot of effort and optimism, “WE

CAN LEARN ALMOST EVERYTHING”. Let us continue to LOVE CHALLENGES so that we

can bring out the greatness in all of us. It is only when we tap our potentials and use

them that we will be capable of achieving the goals that we had set for ourselves.

Other than having a growth mindset, we can all be successful in attaining our

goals by showing a tremendous amount of GRIT in everything that we do—small or big,

simple or complicated, easy or difficult. More known as PASSION and PERSEVERANCE

to pursue GOALS, grit spurs all of us to work for our dreams and aspirations with a lot of

courage and heart. Having grit will enable all of us to remain steadfast in pursuing our

goals, even when we fall down, even when we screw up, even when the progress

towards our goal is halting or slow. GRIT KNOWS NO OBSTACLES. Let us then use it to

find our greatness!

As we all start this potentially great year, let us be inspired with this quote from

Zero Dean: “ALL OF US ARE MEANT FOR GREATNESS! We are stronger, smarter, and

more resilient than we think. We are capable of achieving far more than we believe.

We are meant for greatness like all of those who have achieved it. But it takes

persistence. It takes determination. It takes facing your fears and doing that which is

hard and necessary, instead of what is quick and easy. It takes skipping the mythical

shortcuts and using our imagination as a map and preview of life’s coming attractions.”

Let us choose to continue practicing Growth Mindset. Let us choose to show Grit. Let

us choose to be Great!

#GRITtobeGREAT! Let this be our commitment and battle cry this year. If we

keep true to this, AY 2017-2018 will definitely be a “GRIT” year for all of us. We “KHAN”

do this Valiant Knights! God bless all of us!

Valiant Knights Gear up for Standardized Tests

The students might have had a three-month learning gap due to summer vacation, yet the opening

of the school year is the most suitable time to test their enduring understanding of the lessons taught in the

previous years. For this week, the students are set to take two standardized tests- the MAT/SAT and the SBA.

Standardized tests provide an objective and relevant feedback to the school in terms of its quality

and effectiveness of instruction against national norms and international standards. The results of the

standardized tests: provide good feedback to the student on how well he/she has learned and the degree

of his/ her readiness to move to a higher educational level; pinpoint competencies of students and learning

gaps which serve as basis for learning reinforcement or remediation; and specify academic performance

standards by defining different levels of proficiency such as met standards, progressing toward standards,

and not met standards.

MAT is designed for Grade School students. It features a battery of tests that aim to measure the

general language, arithmetic skills, and reading comprehension. Assessment includes five disciplines-

Reading, Math, Language, Science and Social Studies. SAT for High School covers the same topics, though

questions are bound to be more complex and comprehensive.

SBA tests are administered to Grade School and High School students in subjects such as English,

Math, and Science. SBA is based on an outcomes based education philosophy. Far different from the

traditional teacher-made assessments, standardized tests evaluate the student’s performance based on the

required standards per grade level, rather than comparing a student’s performance with other students.

Pre-Tests results are used by the teachers and the school to identify the areas of strengths and

developmental areas which consequently can provide information for improvement of the institution’s

curiculum, instruction, and assessment. The series of standardized tests are not meant to burden the

students, but to determine the congruence of the tests results.

The school invites the parents of

6th and 12th Grade students to attend

the P.A.S.S. and Honors Orientation for

Parents on July 20, 2017, 10:00 a.m. at

the SSIS Main Hall. There will also be an

orientation on the SHS Curriculum for

parents of 11th and 12th Grade students

after the orientation. See you there!

OF THE WEEK

Testing One’s Limits, Going Beyond Comfort Zones

PARENTING CORNER Ways to Boost Your Child's

Academic Potential Written by Julie Vaughan

Parents are key players in the development of a child’s character,

confidence, motivation, and personal responsibility for schoolwork – all

of which contribute to the child’s academic and personal well-being.

Here are some of the ways on how the parents can help their children

boost academic potential:

1. Praise and encourage your child. You’ve probably heard the

phrase “Be your child’s biggest cheerleader.” For a child to do

well at school, he needs to believe in himself, to have

confidence that no matter what his report card says, he is

valuable and loved.

2. Find out what your child is good at – even if it’s not academics

– and help him cultivate that interest. But also, “Look at specific

areas that your child struggles with and take notice when the

smallest of accomplishment has taken place,” says Teresa

Madden. Let your child know you’re proud of who he or she is.

3. Take care of the basics. Make sure your child has enough

sleep, nutritious food, good hygiene, and regular medical care.

For example, the ministry of education in British Columbia

reports that children who eat a healthy breakfast before school

experience enhanced academic performance,

concentration, and cognitive functioning.

4. Know what your child is studying at school. Look at their

assignment book, ask them what they’ve been discussing at

school, flip through their textbooks and talk to their teachers.

5. Talk to your child’s teacher regularly. Over and over again, the

teachers reiterated the importance of parent-teacher

conferences. Schedule a time that works for both of you, and

show up at school-sponsored conferences whenever possible.
