The CAIR® Cushion SystemThe CAIR® Cushion System replaces the traditional fillings in the saddle panel with air cushions. CAIR® air cushion technology provides significant performance advantages in the way it distributes the rider’s weight and cushions the horse’s back.

Distributing the rider’s weight: Under the rider’s weight the air cushions continu-ally mould to mirror the horses individual confor-mation and working muscles. This ensures a close, even contact over a much larger weight bearing area and eliminates instances of pressure points.

Cushioning the horse’s back: The dynamic nature of air ensures it works in synergy with the horse’s muscles, rather than the horse’s muscles working against a static medium. Additionally, air provides the ultimate shock absorption, reducing instances of trauma to the horse’s muscles in work.

Performance Panel Design all Bates Saddles feature a generous panel, designed to ensure a large “footprint” on the horse’s back, maximising the weight bearing surface of the saddle and resulting in a reduction in pressure per sq cm/inch and increased comfort for the horse. Coupled with a wide and even chamber, the performance panels support the horse’s working muscles and maximises movement in the shoulder area.

Elastiflex TreeFeatures a rigid head to maintain clearance over your horse’s wither, whilst possessing lateral flexion to work with your horse’s muscular movement with every stride. Bates saddles, featuring the revolutionary EASY-CHANGE™ Fit Solution, offer the highest

flexibility for achieving an optimal fit and the ultimate performance for your horse.

after the initial saddle fit, we recommend that you have the fit of your saddle checked within the first three months, as it will settle in the head during the initial riding period, as is standard with all new saddles. Following this initial settling in period, your saddle fit should then be assessed every six months throughout your saddle’s life to ensure the saddle continues to fit correctly as your horse changes shape according to its age, level of fitness and work programme.

it’s always recommended that you seek professional advice on your horse’s saddle fit, where possible. However, the following information can assist you in not only assessing your saddle fit, but understanding when simple adjustments should be made. in order to check the clearance, bearing and balance of a saddle it is important that the saddle is initially positioned correctly.

Ensure your horse is standing square and is on level ground. in order to check the clearance, bearing and balance of the saddle, it’s important the saddle is initially positioned correctly. Locate your horse’s shoulder and check to see that the nail of the saddle is approximately three fingers distance from the edge of your horse’s shoulder.

Checking for sufficient clearanceSufficient clearance of your horse’s wither across the width and length of the spine should be maintained at all times. Check to see that the channel of the saddle is clear of your horse’s wither and spine through the length of the saddle.

Checking for even bearingYour saddle should bear evenly on your horse’s back, providing a close fit. Run your hand between the horse and the panel of the saddle to check for even bearing. if your saddle features the CaiR® Cushion System it’s important that a rider sits in the saddle to check the bearing, as the air panels become dynamic under the rider’s weight.

Checking for a balanced seatCheck that the deepest part of the saddle is central and level to ensure perfect saddle balance.

Should your saddle require further adjustments, select the optimal combination of EaSY-CHangE™ Risers to achieve sufficient clearance, even bearing and perfect balance.

Proper care is crucial to maximising the performance of your Bates saddle. it is a natural product and its life is reliant on maintaining a certain level of moisture.

Your saddle should be regularly cleaned, using glycerine saddle soap and a damp cloth or sponge to remove dirt, which may otherwise scratch the surface. Cleaning should always be followed with a rich, wax-based dressing, such as Bates Leather Balsam. We do not recommend the use of oil on your saddle.

Prior to riding in your new saddle, it is recommended that you liberally dress your saddle with Bates Leather Balsam, allowing it to soak in overnight. The overnight process ensures maximum penetration into the leather,

helping to seal in the moisture and protect your saddle. Bates Leather Cream can also be used to replenish and rejuvenate the moisture content in your saddle, however a leather balsam penetrates deeper into the leather and offers a surface barrier, protecting against wear, water and sweat.

apply your leather balsam or cream heavily in high wear areas, such as the top of the saddle flap where the stirrup leathers will rub. You may apply your dressing to all areas of your saddle that are not suede, including the padded inserts and girth straps.

Treated in this manner, you will achieve the traditional, rich patina of aged worked leather and can expect years of excellent service from your saddle.
