    INSPECTION REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDING ENGINEER,PR,SRIKAKULAM

    Present: Sri.B.Appalanaidu,B.Tech.,(FAC)

    Date of inspection

    Name of the work Construction of High level Bridge across the river

    Mahendratanaya on Bathupuram chinnakosta Road.

    Estimated Cost

    Nature of grant

    Officers Present:

    INSPECTION NOTE

    The proposed bridge site at Bathupuram was inspected on 25.6.2010.

    The total width of the river Mahendratanaya is 115m at the proposed site at Bathupuram.During high

    flood,the width of the river will be even more as per the local enquiry.The river at this point is very

    deep.The river bed is composing of Coarse,fine sand and silt. The alignment of the existing road from

    Bathupuram to Chinnakosta has to be altered to the proposed alignment of the bridge as the Bridge

    alignment should be perpendecular to the stream.

    Hence,the Deputy Executive,PIU,Sompeta and the Asst.Exe.Engineer,PIU,Sompeta are hereby directed to

    prepare the Detailed Project Report with the following provisions:-

    Approach road of 100mts to the Chinnakosta road side of the Bridge and 200mts to the

    Bathupuram road side of the Bridge should be provided with CC Pavement.

    Depending upon the observation of the high river banks and the road way is above HFL, it is felt

    that High Level Bridge is necessary .

    Depending upon the observation of the soil exploration obtained through trial bores and

    economical aspects,it is felt that Pile foundations may be necessary instead of open foundationsas the hard strata(Rock) is available at deeper depth(ie., @ 10 to 11mts from LBL).

    Depending upon the observation of the stream at HFL condition it is clearely evident that Linear

    waterway of the stream should not be less than 115mts.

    As the Bridge is to be connected by an important inter mandal all weather road the carriage way

    width of 7.5mts is necessary.

    As the stream is clean and has stright banks,no rifts or deep pools with fair surface the rugositycoefficient(n)may be taken as 0.03.

    The protection work like revetment with the toe wall to both the banks of the River at Bridge site

    should be provided.

    QUARRY CHART

    DESIGN CALCULATIONS FOR TOE WALL

  • 8/2/2019 Bathupuram Bridge Estimate(Latest Design)

    31/41

    A)Design data:-:-

    Angle of internal friction ' Q ' = 300

    Unit Wieght of Soil ' r ' = 18KN/cumCoefficient of Active Earth pressure ' K a ' = 1/3 P

    Unit Weight of concrete ' p ' = 16KN/cum

    Height of wall ' h ' = 2.50m

    Width of wall at Top ' b1 ' = 0.45m

    Design:- B

    R

    Let the width of the wall at bottom be ' b2 ' W

    Active Earth pressure Pa = 1/2Ka r h2

    = 18.73KN/m

    It acts horizontally at a height of h/3 from the base(Since there is no inclined surcharge and

    the face of the wall is vertical)

    The Wt.of the wall acting down wards through the centroid of the wall section ' W '

    = 9.00 +20b2

    Let ' R ' be the resultant of the above forces acting through the intersection of the above forces with

    components RH and RVFor no tension to develop,the resultant should pass through the middle third of the base,

    taking limiting case, R should act at 2b2/3 from heel ' B '

    From the condition of equilibrium of forces,

    RH = Pa

    RV = W

    and Sum of moments of ' W ' and ' Pa ' about " B " should be equal to the moment of resultant' R ' about ' B'

    RV X 2b2 /3 = W1Xb1/2 + W2[b1+(b2-b1)/3] + PaXh/3

    6.67 b22+ 3.00b2 -16.959375 = 0

    Solving b2 = 1.39m

    However provide 1.50m width at the bottom

    Hence Bottom width b2 = 1.50m

    Check For Safety Against Sliding:-

    Wt.of the wall ' W ' = 39.00KN/m

    Factor of safety against sliding is given by

    F =WTan Q/Pa

    1.200429 > 1.5 Hence Safe

    Check For Stresses:-

    DESIGN CALCULATIONS FOR TOE WALL

    Taking moments about ' B '

  • 8/2/2019 Bathupuram Bridge Estimate(Latest Design)

    32/41

    g

    39.00a = 36.459375

    Hence ' a ' = 0.93

    Hence eccentrici ty ' e ' = 0.18485577

    Maximum stress = W/b2(1+6e/b2)

    = 45.2 < 120KN/M2(Bearing Capacity)
