14TH MARCH 2011

FOCUS ON……TAS

TAS classes across the board have made an impressive start to

the school year. It is very important that all students maintain

their efforts, each of you to the best of your personal ability. If

you slip behind don‟t give up: your efforts to catch up or to lift

your performance will give you and your teacher a lot of satis-

faction.

Within the TAS faculty, students are given the opportunity to

study a wide range of subjects. We are fortunate to have a very

dynamic, experienced and professional staff who are constantly

improving and implementing current and new curriculum objec-

tives.

TAS Student uniform and footwear

We all need to play a part in ensuring student safety at school. A

TAS priority is to follow and maintain good safety practices

within the faculty. All students who have elected a TAS subject

with the exception of computing subjects must wear appropriate

footwear for practical activities.

Footwear such as open weave cloth type shoes, shoes with open-

ings at toes or heels,

platforms or high-heel shoes cannot be worn in a workshop,

kitchen or agricultural area. They present a potentially

hazardous situation. It‟s

important that parents or guardians ensure that these require-

ments are met. Students who do not wear the appropriate foot-

wear will be excluded from practical activities.

Appropriate Footwear: Fully enclosed black or white shoes

with a leather or heavy vinyl upper material.

Vocational Education

Students studying a vocational education subject in TAS are

currently completing their final work placement, completing a

minimum of 70 hours experience in the workplace. We offer a

diverse range of vocational subjects which include Metals and

Engineering, Construction, Information Technology, Primary

Industries and Hospitality. Feedback received by many host

employers has been fantastic, commenting on the level of skill

our students have already attained, also the manner in which our

students conducted themselves in the workplace. Many students

who enter into a vocational education course are offered

employment opportunities throughout the time they are

completing their mandatory work placement.

Thanks and well done from the School and its Community to

students studying Construction pictured above.

Recently Construction students and their teachers Mr Brian

Walsh and Mr Joseph Hardy undertook quite a large project

creating a new classroom. A range of competencies including

wall framing and carpentry skills were assessed throughout the

project.

Special mention for their efforts:

Kieran Muldoon, Mitchell Roxburgh, Bradley Nancarrow and

Kurt Weal-Finnerty

Industrial Technology – Timber and Furniture

Industries and Multi-Media

The Faculty and particularly their teachers, Mr George

Shoemark and Mr Laurence Capper are extremely proud

of a group of dedicated students who are currently

studying the year 12 Industrial Technology courses. This

is the first year 12 cohort completing the new category A

HSC elective.

Students present to Board of Studies markers a major pro-

ject which showcases their skills and the knowledge

gained throughout their time at BHC. The major project

is a significant proportion of

their final HSC mark.

Agriculture

It has been an exceptional

growing season at the

school‟s Ag farm this year,

with a wide variety of vegeta-

bles sown. As the colder

months approach the students have been busy harvesting

tomatoes, spinach, carrots, cucumber, beetroot, celery,

capsicum and climbing beans. You have to be quick!

Often produce is consumed immediately after picking

and most importantly, students learn how essential fresh

vegetable are in their diet.

Senior Primary Industries students are currently in the

process of sowing down a paddock of Blackbutt oats, a

most valuable crop necessary to keep our livestock in

peak condition throughout the winter months ahead.

Engineering

Currently Mr Paul Waine is hard at work blending robot-

ics, computing and electronics specialisations into our

Engineering Technology curriculum. Students are gaining

experience and knowledge in diverse range of technolo-

gies.

We haven‟t the space to acknowledge all class efforts in

this newsletter though there are lots of commendable

things happening in all areas. We will try to cover other

aspects and endeavours in future newsletters.

Bathurst Show

Mr Hardy once again is organising the Animal Nursery at

the show. If there is anyone in the School Community that

could lend or donate young farm animals it would be

greatly appreciated. Please contact Mr Hardy. Bathurst

High has been proudly involved in the show for many

years. Students from the school play an integral role in our

display, setting up and liaising with visitors to the nursery,

as well as caring for the animals. It is a most rewarding

learning experience.

News from the Principal’s Office

Geoff Hastings

Campus Principal

Learning at Bathurst High

I never cease to be impressed by the learning that is happening in classes as I walk around the school. The fact that Bathurst

High makes a difference to students from 7 - 12 is supported by our data and by ad hoc information such as the number of

positive learning comments recorded against students in our tracking system. The fact that teachers make sure they take the

time to enter these recognition entries demonstrates how much they appreciate the commitment of the students. Part of the

reason that this culture of recognition continues to develop at Bathurst High is due to the excellent work of our Positive

Behaviour for Learning team. To date 993 separate positive recognition entries have been made at Bathurst High.

Congratulations to every student who has received a positive entry.

Congratulations P&C

The P&C AGM took place before the normal March meeting. It was very pleasing to see a strong attendance of interested

and committed parents at the meeting. As a result all positions were filled and our new executive consists of:

President: Carol Neary

Senior Vice President: John Browett

Junior Vice President: Murray Jewkes

Treasurer: Wendy Inwood

Minutes Secretary: Lyndall Ross

My thanks to those who put up their hands for these positions. They are vital to the ongoing development of the campus and

therefore for our students.

In addition the P&C had a presentation from Assets Management on the design for the Gymnasium proposal. This was

done by Regional Assets Manager Richard Connolly and was well received. A Curriculum document has also been prepared

as an additional argument for the establishment of a gymnasium.

An parent can stay abreast of the deliberations and decisions of P&C. By going to the Bathurst High website and entering

the parents link - there you will find the latest P&C minutes as a downloadable pdf file.

Changes to Curriculum We are making a number of changes to our curriculum. As a result of our increases in student numbers we are making a

seventh class in year 8. This will be a third class of independent workers. Parents need a reminder that in year 7 and 8 core

classes are divided into an extension class, an independent student classes and learning assistance classes.

In addition, an extra core class is being started in Year 10 in all mandatory subjects except PDHPE, an extra Technology

class in Year 8, and an extra Community and Family Studies and Advanced English class in Year 11. Classes in Senior Sci-

ence Year 12 will be collapsed to one as numbers in the course have fallen.

Uniform Shop and Canteen

Both the uniform shop and canteen are running smoothly and students and staff have been quick to take up opportunities for

hot chocolate presented by the new coffee machine.

A reminder on uniforms that shorts and track suit pants must be all navy - no logos or white stripes. The school has not

enforced this requirement before due to the lack of availability of a line of clothing like this. Now that we have a reliable and

cheap supplier their will be more emphasis on this as the year progresses.

Leave

I have been offered an opportunity to work for Charles Sturt University at their Burlington Campus in

Canada for the second half of this year. This opportunity is one that will allow me to teach in areas of

leadership and teacher training to aspiring Canadian Principals so if all things remain equal I will be on

leave from Bathurst High for terms 2 and 3. More information on relieving personnel as the date draws

nearer.

Within the next couple of weeks an invoice for the payment of school fees will be sent home. It is important that fees are

paid as soon as possible as they cover the cost of materials used by students in their chosen electives. Fees can be paid at

the office by way of cash, Mastercard, Bankcard etc. Eftpos is not available, however, over the phone payments can be

made with a credit card. If you are experiencing difficulty in paying fees please contact the Deputy Principal of either the

Junior or Senior school to organise assistance.

News From The Senior School

Year 12 is busily preparing for their HSC Mid Course Examinations commencing on the 28 th March and they will run

for two weeks. They have received their Board of Studies entries and all students need to check the spelling of their

names and ensure the courses listed are the ones they are studying for the HSC. If a student is studying a TVET subject

and requires it for their ATAR they must ensure they enrol in the HSC exam for that subject, because it is not compul-

sory to sit for a TVET examination. Students who wish can have the competencies they have completed listed with their

record of Achievement.

The Leadership Team has been organising some excellent acts for the assemblies and to date Loren Café and Will

Tremain have entertained the whole school at the two scheduled assemblies each week A. Will is also going to perform

at lunch next Tuesday to promote his new CD which will be on sale at school for $15.00. The Leadership Team is also

organising a team for the Relay for Life to be held soon in Bathurst.

Bathurst High Captains, Brock Collins and Brianna Wade are now in the SRC roll call class and this gives the Leader-

ship Team a link to the SRC and assists in coordinating fund raising activities and other events across the school.

Simone Carroll from Lithgow TAFE was at the school this week to outline the requirements for the 10 day course which

includes camping, canoeing, rock climbing and bush hygiene and safety. There were over thirty students at the meeting

from both HSC and Preliminary years and the enthusiasm is due to the fact that the course is fun and also worth 2 units

of study.

Preliminary course changes ceased two weeks ago and students are now set in their study pattern for the Preliminary

year which is completed at the end of Term 3. There will be room for students to drop a course during Term 2 as long as

they are studying 14 units. The timing for this will be when TAFE notifies the school that TAFE courses are guaranteed

to be included in each student‟s 12 units that are needed to complete the Preliminary Course.

Senior students are reminded that late arrival for school due to morning classes at Kelso High or study periods (Year 12

only) makes it necessary for them to sign in at the office. A school report with a large number of unexplained absences,

will not impress any employer or future university accommodation application reviewers.

Year 10 students are reminded that class work and assignment work must be completed in order to meet

Board of Studies requirements. An “N Award” in any of the compulsory subjects means that the student

will not be awarded a School Certificate. Students who receive a warning must complete the requirements

listed.

The Bathurst Regional Youth Council met on Thursday the 10th March for the first meeting of 2011.

Denison College Bathurst High Campus was represented by three excellent nominees in Lauren Inwood

and Eric Mayhew from Year 11 and Anne Murray from Year 10. These students will work with students

from the other Bathurst High Schools to organise youth events and discuss issues

affecting their peers. Bathurst High congratulates all of them on their selection and

knows they will be exemplary representatives of the school.

Hi everyone!

It is great to see everyone embracing the new uniform. I have had several comments from parents on how smart our

students look. Congratulations everyone and keep up the good work!

The weather has started to get cooler in the mornings so you may need to think about our winter uniform. We have our

Junior hoodies, Senior hoodies and track pants in stock, as well as our wool jumpers. Feel free to come in and have a

look.A huge THANK YOU to those Senior students who have been very patiently waiting for their polos to arrive.

They are finally in and are ready to be collected from the shop.

The Uniform Shop price list and opening hours are attached for your convenience.

PLEASE NOTE – CHEQUES NEED TO BE MADE PAYABLE TO DAYLIGHT SPORTSWEAR.

Thank you!

News From The Middle School

Yr 7 Camp The excitement is building amongst Yr 7 students as they prepare to go to camp at Lake Burrendong next week. Today

students were given a list of items to pack, as well as being invited to sort out their cabin buddies. Great times ahead!

It‟s not too late to contact us about your child attending the camp. Please contact us, rather than have your child miss

this wonderful opportunity to learn in a different environment, make new friends and life-long skills and attributes.

Class Placements Year 7 and 8 We are almost finished the process of examining each student‟s placement in their class. We will be discussing any

recommendations for class change with parents. Change of classes will be determined according to teacher profes-

sional judgement, current test results and learning needs.

In Year 8 we will see some significant class changes due to our increase in student numbers. We are forming a new Yr

8 core class, a 9th Technology Class and increasing supervision of sport from 8 to 9 teachers.

These structural changes, not only in Year 8, necessitate a new timetable and Mrs Howard and the team are working

hard to produce the new timetable as soon as possible.

Year 9 Electives Yr 9 are settled and there are no more elective changes to occur, unless there are exceptional circumstances and

parents are involved in discussions.

Opportunities Please remember to check out our website regularly, not only will you find the newsletters, but you will also discover

the many excursions and events taking place at Bathurst High, such as the successful

recent Yr 7 Meet the Teacher event.

Each day in Roll Call teachers read out the Daily Notices listing opportunities for students to try out for particular

teams or events. Students have many opportunities to participate in excursions, teams, work experience, competitions

and performance groups. Let your child‟s Student Adviser know if your child enjoys certain activities, but is reluctant

to step forward – we can encourage and support your child in making the most of the opportunities available.

Arriving to School on Time The majority of our students arrive at school before the bell at 8.55am or 9.30am on Wednesdays. If, however, there

have been serious, unavoidable circumstances causing your child to be late, a note is required to explain the lateness.

Students who are arriving at school late without explanation are placed on lunch detention. We stress to our students

that attendance = learning and the importance of being at school on time and ready to learn.

Emergency Evacuation All personnel at Bathurst High have practiced evacuation in case of an emergency. In the upcoming weeks we will

also have a Lockdown practice.

The Positive Behaviour for Learning Team have completed a consultation process to determine a motivational recognition

system for all students. The new system will be introduced soon, with students able to earn „Flags‟, „Grandstand‟ and

„Podium‟ awards. In Roll Call, students have been creating board games to teach the importance of Safe, Respectful

Learners. Teachers regularly recognise student positive behaviour and improved behaviour and record this on our

Millennium system. Parents who have a Log-in to our Portal are able to see the positive incidents recorded.

Year 7 students‟ efforts and achievements will be recognised at a Commendation Ceremony at the end of this term.

Our focus areas for positive behaviour are: Keep left in the corridors, line up safely outside classrooms, put rubbish in the

bin, speak politely, and be on time for school and class. Each focus area is demonstrated, taught and practised.

Plans for the PBL Launch – a spectacular event- are in the pipeline!

Swimming Report 2011

Bathurst High had a small contingent of 9 swimmers travel to Cowra on the 2nd March. Our usual relay swimmers had a rest

this year so our team was small but determined!

Several of the girls – Rosie Hogan, Meg Dawson and Jessica McLeod were keen to add to their program so they decided to

enter the relay. The only spot available to cater for all their ages saw them combine with Jodie Simson (KHC) to enter the 16

years relay. The result was surprising but pleasing with the team blitzing the field and earning a trip to

Sydney. Well done girls! Meg will also be competing in the 14 years breaststroke after finishing in second place in her trial.

Rosie was never out of the top ten in her three events in the 13 years girls. Jessica finished

within the top ten in most of her events swimming improved entry times in her 100m back-

stroke and 200m freestyle.

Jacob Davey was our only year 7 student this year. He found the competition tough but

swam an improved time in the 100m freestyle compared to his school swim. Emily Lynch

swam two events 50m freestyle and 100m breaststroke just missing a Homebush swim

coming 5th and 4th respectively.

Bede Hanrahan had to contest the top age (17-19years) this year and found the going tough

against the older students. He couldn‟t breakthrough in his 50 and 100m freestyle swims

finishing just out of qualifying in fourth place. The 100m breaststroke was his best effort where he finished third and will

swim this event in Sydney.

Gil Hanrahan usually competes in the relay but as there wasn‟t one this year he had to rely

on his own ability in the 16 years 50m freestyle which he was able to do finishing in third

position.

Braydon Ross had a heavy program competing in

5 events, he was always within the top ten but

couldn‟t break the barrier for a swim in Syd-

ney. He swam an excellent leg in the 100m

breaststroke but he was beaten by milliseconds

into fourth place.

Joshua Stapley swam in the 14 years like Braydon and he was always within the

top ten in his six races. Josh improved his 200m freestyle time by 7 seconds

which placed him into third and gave him a swim in Sydney.

A big thanks to all the parents who transported the swimmers.

The team of Meg Dawson, Bede Hanrahan, Gil Hanrahan, Rosie Hogan, Jessica McLeod and Joshua Stapley will now

compete between the 24-26th March 2011. Good luck to all swimmers.

A Piece of π

Year 12 are having their mid course exams in the last 2 weeks of term.

Yr 11 are having an assessment task week 9.

Years 8, 9, 10 will have a non calculator test Week 10.

Some students are forgetting to bring calculators every lesson, which may results in a detention and letter home.

All students should have their www.mathsonline.com.au password and login for 2011. If not please ask your teachers to

hand them out and visit the site and start getting the free tutorials and worksheets.

Last week we had a Green Day on Friday 4th March. All Year Sevens helped pick up rubbish , weed the Maths garden

and tidy the playground. Thanks for such a positive response.

7N Maths also sold some sweet treats to raise money especially to get tree guards

made to go around the trees that 7N 2010 raised money to buy.

Thanks to Isaac Ayoub, Courtney Ham, Georgia Browett and Emma Warburton,

parents who donated cakes, biscuits and fudge and Mrs Krajcer‟s bubble gum balls

we raised nearly $50. Well done team!!

Choc Challenge A man died leaving all of his money to be

divided amongst his widow, four daughters and three

sons. He stipulated that each daughter should receive three times

as much as each son and each son should receive twice as much as their

mother. The exact amount left was $7936, so how much did everyone receive?

Choc Challenge Answer

Try and write an algebraic equation to see why it works.

Here is a little trick you can try with a friend after you have tried it yourself. If you use a

calculator press equals after each instruction.

Write your house number.

Multiply by 2.

Add 5.

Multiply by 50.

Add your age in years.

Add 365.

Subtract 615.

Find the house number and age in the answer and tell the other person how old they are and

their house number.

For a chocolate, can you explain how it works?
