President’s Message...Cherie Wood

3

Having just returned from the 75th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee of our National

Federation of Republican Women in Louisville, Kentucky, I'm so happy to report that

our very own Maureen "Mo" Karas was Nevada's "Volunteer of the Year" with the

most hours in the entire state!! I know each of you will join me in congratulating Mo

with this great honor of recognition! Bittersweet, at the same time though, was that

ARW was not publicly honored for achieving the Diamond Award. We qualified for it

and all of our members deserved to be recognized for their collective achievements

but for whatever reason the paperwork confirming this accomplishment was lost in the

shuffle! Just very glad confirmation of Mo's volunteer hours located in the same

paperwork, made it safely into the awards booklet, though. Further disappointing was

the seemingly lack of support from our NvFRW President and state Achievement

Chair. Once copies of the achievement awards were emailed to us due to the gallant

efforts of Eleanor Mills and Margaret Helsper, we were told the documents had to be

"certified" even with our leadership present. Perhaps the embarrassment of the

oversight was too difficult to bare or for which to apologize. ARW still did not receive

the deserved recognition at the convention while another NFRW member was

acknowledged publicly late in the convention program after being omitted for her

achievement of highest number of volunteer hours for the state of Illinois. Later we

discovered another club, Sierra Nevada Republican Women were omitted, as well.

Hard work for Republican values and community service deserves RECOGNITION

for that is what the NFRW continually touts on behalf of it's 75,000 membership

organization.

So it is with the utmost gratefulness in my heart that I dedicate this message to my

fellow members of Active Republican Women of Las Vegas with a HUGE

CONGRATULATIONS!! ON ACHIEVING THE

New ARW Reserved Table Policy

The ARW board has voted to adopt a formal policy regarding reserved tables at our monthly meetings. Effec-

tive October 1, 2013 a full table can be reserved if all RSVP's are paid through our online PayPal system or a

check mailed and received 2 days prior to each monthly meeting. If any member requests a reserved table of 10, all seats must be paid for in advance.

I'm certain all ARW members will respect the fairness of this policy. The board feels this will allow for a more

welcoming environment for our guests and new members. With that said, the board really encourages a

timely RSVP to our monthly meetings and payment in advance in order to allow the staff at Spanish Trails

Country Club to provide the expert service for which their establishment is well known. To do less, is to de-prive them from performing at their very best.

Thank you all for continuing to make Active Republican Women of Las Vegas GREAT!

Literacy...Molly Governs

ARW Literacy

Literacy is a community outreach program. That is something we ARW ladies do very well.

I would encourage anyone who has a few minutes to first, contact me, Molly Governs, via

email for a few helpful hints on doing volunteer reading in our local schools or day care cen-

ters. My email address is [email protected]. Put “ARW Literacy” in the subject heading.

Your neighbor hood school will most certainly have a need for guest readers. Just call their

office and talk to the school’s volunteer coordinator or the principal.

The ARW Literacy is always looking for donations of elementary school level books to give

to needy schools in the Las Vegas Valley. Also, books of any type for our Veterans are also

welcome. The books can be gently used or new.

Homework and Literacy

Literacy takes on many forms. It has recently come to my attention through a weekly news-

letter published by the National Center for Literacy Education (NCLE) that a Google and

the National Center for Family Literacy survey has shown parents are all too often frus-

trated by their children’s homework. Half the parents admitted having trouble helping stu-

dents with homework. Of that number 46.5% parents actually don’t understand the home-

work.

Legislative Report...Melody Howard

Today I had the pleasure of representing Active Republican Women of Las Vegas (“ARW”) as a voting member

of the Nevada Republican Party’s Central Committee for our biennial election of officers.

I really enjoyed talking with Republicans throughout the state. Most of Clark’s newly elected officers participated

in a roundtable with the officers from other counties and there was some lively dialogue on the various issues

affecting different regions of the state. All in all, the consensus was we will all work together to ensure victory

over a progressive agenda of higher taxes and gun control.

It’s also quite interesting to discover that out of 17 Counties, 8 of those counties have elected women to be their

County Chairs. 47%!. That does not include all of the women in leadership positions throughout our state.

The Election

It was a rough week for the Party as the Chairman’s race intensified, and various news media joined in to make

this race as ugly as it could have been – in a very public manner. Both candidates were highly qualified for the

position. I’m pleased that in their media interviews, each were careful not to disparage the other on a personal

level, and for that I am grateful.

This race also entered into the Twitter and Facebook universe. For those of you who use social media in their

daily lives, I’m sure you were not spared the ugliness that this race brought out this week; however, on the flip

side of that, I’m very excited that Republicans in Nevada are embracing social media. While social media can

bring a negative message, it can just as easily deliver a positive one. I’m unsure of who stated this in the

blogosphere, but I think it holds true:

"Social media is speech with a pretty big megaphone"

I congratulate Michael McDonald on his re-election as Chairman of the Nevada Republican Party, Jim

DeGraffenried as Vice Chair, Nan Adams as Secretary, and Michael Bertrand as Treasurer. The election results

were:

Chair:

Michael McDonald: 193

Robert Uithoven: 112

Chairman McDonald won with 62% of the vote

Vice Chair:

Jim DeGraffenried: 222

Tim Williams: 76

Jim DeGraffenried won with 74% of the vote.

Secretary:

Nan Adams: 218

Phyllis Westropp: 87

Nan Adams won with 70% of the vote

Treasurer:

Michael Bertrand ran unopposed and received 90% of the vote.

County Reports (cont)

White Pine: White Pine intends to repeat their 2012 election strategy, they won every Republican seat

(and took a few Democrat incumbents out), in the 2014 election. They are first on the Lincoln Day circuit

and will have their Lincoln Day/Reagan Dinner on January 18th.

Lyon: Rich Hardcastle spoke on behalf of Chairwoman Peggy Gray and expressed that they are doing ex-

ceptionally well. Their focus is on sharing information amongst counties and fundraising. They are work-

ing on a car show, an opportunity drawing for a rifle, and a golf tournament. They are also working with

their local high school on fundraisers to jointly raise money. They are attending all local and County

events, and setting up booths whenever possible. This has increased membership at their meetings. They

are focusing on getting all members involved in something. They are also setting up for the Caucus and

their Lincoln Day Dinner.

Nye: Bill Carns, Chairman of Nye County, is very proud that they have successfully brought 3 different

factions of Republicans together to form a more cohesive county structure. They have increased their

membership, and the amount of volunteers participating in various activities. They are having a BBQ on

October 19th at Bill’s new home and will host several speakers. They are additionally having a Governor’s

Gala on November 1st at the winery. Bill stressed that now candidates are coming to them for support, and

that’s how it should be. They’re excited about the CD04 race and their political director, Lisa Marie John-

son, plans on “slapping the Democrats away.”

Pershing: Carolyn Holbrank spoke on behalf of Chairwoman Carol Shank and discussed their very small

County. They have approximately 7,000 residents, overwhelmingly Republican with the exception of the

Burning Man event, when their population increased to 77,000. Carolyn stated that Washoe gets the

money, they get the smoke. Pershing is very excited that they will have Lincoln Day Breakfast on Febru-

ary 9th and Senator Heller and Congressman Amodei will be the guest speakers.

Story: Story County’s chair, Dr. Rob Slaby, discussed two primary events. The first featured Assembly-

man Jim Wheeler whom he described as very informed and very personable. They thanked Washoe

County for their overwhelming support of their second event.

Washoe: Washoe County’s Chair Tom Taber discussed the expansion of their communications, opening

their meetings to everyone, participating in community events, precinct walks focused on verification of

registered voters. They will be walking every weekend. They are focusing on social media, with numer-

ous writers and editors to publish weekly articles. They are working with the Young Republicans at UNR

who are a very group with 60-75 students in attendance at their weekly meetings. They are additionally

conducting a 1st Fridays at Claim Jumpers and have focused on elected officials and candidates as their

guest speakers.

County Reports

Each County was given 2 minutes to present what they’ve been doing. Our counties have been very busy

since our last meeting, and a few were unable to finish telling us all the great things going on in such a short

time. I’m proud to report that our Chairman, David McKeon, reported a lot of information, was succinct,

even gave a few shout outs to our various teams, and finished on time. Here is a brief review of what’s go-

ing on throughout the state:

Carson: Chairwoman Lori Bagwell discussed the use of town halls to engage and grow their membership.

They are also working on identifying homes that are not registered to vote. They are also having a great time

engaging their membership in participating in parades and, in closing, “Carson is Red Hot and Ready to

Elect Republicans.”

Churchill: Churchill’s Chair, Sandy Hillery, reported that they are duplicating Carson’s efforts and are hold-

ing their first town hall. They meet quarterly and they are excited that their young Republicans are teaching

them all about Twitter, Facebook, social media, and they’re also updating their website. They had a float in

the Labor Day parade and were excited that they were moved up from float #130 or so, to #2, right behind

Governor Sandoval. Sandy closed with “At the end of the day, we’re all Republicans.”

Clark: Chairman David McKeon opened with it’s all about “winning elections.” His report focused on our

first 60 days in office. Clark County is focused on minority outreach, candidate training – sponsoring a can-

didate boot camp, social media/Skype meetings, growing our email list from 15,000 to 90,000, our new web-

site, precinct organization (118 signed up, 80 trained), 400 + volunteers, gave a shout out to our own Barbara

Altman for her Candidate Recruitment efforts, Dave Clark for his volunteer outreach (and 70% success rate),

and Steve Commander who has reached out to 300 + non-CCRCC members who are Republicans. McKeon

has also raised $8,300 so far and has a $5,000/month commitment from the Las Vegas Sands, as well as re-

ceiving a $6,500.00 in kind donation from Sue Lowden in sponsoring our first fundraiser for Nevada Day.

I’d say that’s a pretty darn good start.

Douglas: Chairman Marco Caldana opened with the fact that there are 401 days until the 2014 election. Mr.

Caldana briefly discussed their efforts of reaching out to NP voters due to voter bleed (Republicans register-

ing as NP) and basically expressed “Folks just want our candidates to do what they say they will do.” He

also discussed the fact that this election seemed to focus on money vs. principal and believes that we will be

stronger if we switch that to “money and principal.” He also expressed his satisfaction that both candidates

agreed to be committed to the Party regardless of the election results.

Elko: Jim Cooney spoke on behalf of Chairman Lee Hoffman and reported they are working hard on Pre-

cinct coordination and getting ready for the caucus, they look forward to participating in the Nevada Day Pa-

rade, and their Hispanic outreach has been very successful.

Humboldt: Chairman Stephan Tibbals was very pleased that Governor Sandoval asked them to put together

a float on his behalf for the Labor Day Parade and that their float took 1st place!

ARW CARING FOR THE TROOPS COMMITTEE PROJECTS:

USO ARW MEMBERS: Below is a message from USO Las Vegas to all donors and that includes each of you who

have donated toiletries (small person items: toothbrushes, paste, lotion, soap etc.). Let's keep it coming. These items are greatly needed and sincerely appreciated.

Bring your next donation to the October monthly meeting. Message from Doug Bradford, Director, USO Las Vegas, McCarran Airport:

Thank you very much for your 2013 contributions to USO Las Vegas. Since we opened our doors on Veterans Day in November 2010, the USO Las Vegas Center at McCarran Airport has served nearly 95,000 service members, including their dependents, and guests. The smiles on the faces of those who visit us are priceless. Many visitors comment that USO las Vegas is the best USO they have ever vis-ited. That's a testament to the Las Vegas community, our volunteers and to you, our donors who sup-port our functions and help USO Las Vegas promote its mission of serving those who serve our country. Your donations enable the troops at McCarran International Airport to find comfort and respite in a setting that is a true "Home Away From Home". Our center is designed so those serving our country, present and past, can take a break, rest, relax and have a little fun while awaiting their next airline flight. It is a bright and welcoming facility, and our programs are tailored to meet the ever changing needs of our service men and women, as well as their families. Community support of the USO Las Vegas is vital to the success of our facility and extremely important to our military and the USO. Again, we greatly appreciate your generous gifts. Respectfully yours, Doug Bradford, Center Director, USO Las Vegas.

Tuesday, September, 17 was Liberty Day. ARW sponsored the Day with a discussion on the Constitution with the 5th Grade Students from Marion Cahalan-Edison Elementary School. Our guest speaker was Richard Scotti, a lawyer at Kemp Jones. He spoke on the Constitution and what it means to all of us. He spoke about the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence and how these principals framed our Country today. The children were very enthusiastic and asked many questions. Especially about Richard and what it took too become a Lawyer. I would like to thank Richard Scotti, Brenda and Michael Flank, Kristine Fisher for helping me with Liberty Day.

I am a Republican because…

I believe the strength of our nation lies with the individual and that each person’s

dignity, freedom, ability and responsibility must be honored.

I believe in equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of

race, creed, sex, age or disability

I believe free enterprise and encouraging individual initiative have brought this na-

tion opportunity, economic growth and prosperity.

I believe government must practice fiscal responsibility and allow individuals to

keep more of the money they earn.

I believe the proper role of government is to provide for the people only those criti-

cal functions that cannot be performed by individuals or private organizations and

that the best government is that which governs least.

I believe the most effective, responsible and responsive government is government

closest to the people.

I believe Americans must retain the principles that have made us strong while de-

veloping new and innovative ideas to meet the challenges of changing times.

I believe Americans value and should preserve our national strength and pride

while working to extend peace, freedom and human rights throughout the world.

Finally, I believe the Republican Party is the best vehicle for translating these ide-

als into positive and successful principles of government.
