“I knew I needed stitches after a young horse jolted back and hit me in the face. What I didn’t know was where I’d get the best care. My biggest fear was being left with a big scar. But that all changed when I went to Bronson Battle Creek. I didn’t wait long. And everyone in that emergency department was so comforting and kind. My doctor was fantastic, too. He made me laugh when I needed it most, and my face healed up nicely. So thanks, Bronson, for making my bad day a whole lot better.”

OMNI Gives Back Grant Awarded to Woman’s Co- op

Battle Creek, Mich. – “Woman’s Co- op is about women helping women. In many ways, it’s as simple as that.” In many ways it is – and much more.

The Co- op began as a grassroots effort in 2005 and has since transitioned to an organization that focuses on improving the lives of women in many ways through education, management skills and employment opportunities.

Serving women and their families who have little or no income, the Woman’s Co- op takes a holistic approach to giving

outlook on life. As those who receive support move forward, they in turn help others coming into the program. Over 300 families are currently part of the member service network with the Co- op serving as many as 160 families at a time.

“Woman’s Co- op is community in the truest sense of the word,” OMNI Community Credit Union CEO Ted Parsons stated. “It’s the ideal example of being supported and being given the tools to be

you’ve learned and what you’ve experienced and using it to give others that same support.”

To help support the request for aid to continue the work of the Co- op’s member service community, OMNI

Gives Back awarded the organization with a $3,000 grant.

“Like Mr. Parsons and OMNI we believe in the value of being a community, of working together for the good of all. We are thrilled to include OMNI as a community partner in the mission of Woman’s Co- op.” Teresa Phillips, Executive Director for Woman’s Co- op stated.

For those interested or wanting more information on Woman’s Co- op can visit www.womanscoop.org or call: 269- 966- 8988. Through the OMNI Gives Back Grant Program, the credit union seeks and accepts grant applications from local non-

union philosophy of “People Helping People.” Complete details and access to the grant application are available at givesback.omnicommunitycu.org.

Key Club MembersCelebrate a Year of Service

Members of the Lakeview High School Key Club in March joined clubsfrom across Michigan for the Annual District Convention in Grand Rapids.Six Lakeview club members and staff advisors Irene Mayfield and KatieNewburn spent much of the conference participating in service projectsincluding packaging life-saving meals for families in Haiti, makingblankets for children with cancer, and making cooling packs for soldiers.

The group took time out to celebrate the accomplishments of LHS KeyClub President Amanda Noakes and fellow LHS senior Kelly Peng whowere recognized at the convention. Amanda earned first place in theScrapbooking (Year in Review) competition for her work documenting allclub activities for the year. Kelly was recognized for serving as theMichigan District Club Secretary. In this role, she helped to oversee allMichigan clubs and to plan the district convention.

The friends, who have both participated in Key Club for the past fouryears, agreed that their favorite club project was the Teddy Bears forCancer fundraiser, which resulted in the purchase and donation of 25teddy bears to the cancer center in Battle Creek.

Participating in Key Club has inspired a life-long commitment toservice for both Kelly and Amanda. Amanda shared, “Once you seeeveryone together, all ready to serve, you realize how much you canaccomplish.”

Lakeview partners with Educatiusto bring in International StudentsIn the fall of 2014, the student body at Lakeview High School may look a

little different. The district is planning on enrolling up to forty students fromall over the world through Educatius International. The district is excited toopen its doors to international students and the opportunity for Lakeviewstudents to sit next to students from areas such as Europe, South America, and Asia in their everyday classrooms.

Educatius (http://educatius.org/) is a company that works to find hostfamilies for international students and provides the students with qualityeducational and cultural experiences in the United States. Many of thestudents wish to attend universities in the U.S. and therefore choose tostudy abroad during their high school career. Students are between ages14-18 upon arrival and are required to have studied English and passed anEnglish Proficiency test. Students arrive with their own spending moneyand often are able to pay their own way and accompany families onvacations such as spring break.

The district and Educatius are in the process of finding and placingstudents with host families. The goal is to get as many students as possibleplaced before the end of June. All types of families are able to host inter-national students, including families with young children, empty nesters, and single parent homes. In fact, Lakeview High School teacher DanielleFulayter has stated that hosting a student with young children is incrediblyrewarding as her girls (ages 4 and 9) really looked up to her exchange stu-dents. Host families are needed both for the whole school year, as well asto serve as temporary emergency host families as needed (usually for a 6-8 week period).

Host families receive a $300 monthly reimbursement per hosted studentto cover the cost of an additional person in the home. Families are wel-come to take in more than one student as long as each student has theirown bed, dresser, quiet place to study, and three meals a day. Educatiusprovides 24/7 support for host families and works to ensure a positive expe-rience for both the student and the host family. The EducatiusIndependent Coordinators at Lakeview are Lindsey Keller and AlexisBallard-McCleary. Both Lindsey and Alexis work at the high school and willbe responsible for checking on students’ grades and checking in with hostfamilies to ensure a proper match.

If interested in the opportunity to host a student, please contact Lindsey([email protected]) or Alexis ([email protected] ).

Safety UpdateThe May 16 safety exercise at Lakeview Middle School is being con-

ducted in partnership with the Battle Creek Police Department. Ongoingcollaboration between Lakeview’s safety committee, led by LakeviewHigh School Assistant Principal Marty Pessetti, and the Battle Creek PoliceDepartment, represented by Emergency Services Director MikeMcKenzie, has set in motion initiatives and school safety response planswhich serve as models to schools and communities across the state.

Locally, community collaboration continues to grow through the for-mation of the Battle Creek Emergency Response Consortium, a group ofarea agencies specially trained and committed to providing critical inci-dent support for our community. Led by the BCPD and Calhoun CountyAmerican Red Cross, this consortium of local non-profits will play a vitalrole in the May 16 safety exercise.

Superintendent Dave Peterson last year declared a renewed commit-ment to safety planning in Lakeview schools. Since that time, the dis-trict’s already active safety committee has expanded to include staffmembers from each building, parents, community members and locallaw enforcement personnel.

A number of other activities and investments have taken place overthe past 12 months, including: the installation of camera and buzzersystems to monitor and control access to our elementary buildings, theimplementation of new procedures at the middle school to make thetraffic flow more efficient and safer for all students, and the addition ofclassroom security measures across the district.

Parent and community support of these efforts has been tremendous.Parent Watch D.O.G.S. programs are now active at Riverside andWestlake elementary schools. A program will begin next fall at LakeviewMiddle School. Through these programs, dads, grandfathers, uncles andcommunity members volunteer one or more days per year to provide anadditional measure of security at our buildings.

The district safety committee has also expanded this year to includeparent and community volunteers, staff representatives from each dis-trict building, and Battle Creek Police Department personnel. An addi-tional 40 parent volunteers and 40 Calhoun Area Career Center LawEnforcement students will assist with the May 16 drill.

Please stay tuned following the May 16 exercise for more informationabout the role of parents and students in a critical incident situation.

LHS Key Club members, pictured at the District Convention, organizedand participated in numerous community service projects throughoutthe year.
