4th Quarter 2017
“Success is a Choice”
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Battlefield Families, We are now in the home stretch of the 2016-17 school year! I want to thank everyone for all you continue to do to support Battlefield High School. I am constantly amazed by students and community members who want to help our staff make Battlefield the best it can be. I believe in continuous improvement and your feedback is valuable. As we begin the 4th quarter, I hope you will share with me ways I can make Battlefield's educational experience the best it can possibly be for all involved. Please assist us in helping your student finish strong by reviewing grades. Tea chers, counselors, and administrators are available to help if you have any questions.

Welcome Mrs. Malone!
In early March the School Counseling department grew with the addition of Career Counselor
Natalie Malone. Mrs. Malone has been a professional school counselor for seven years and has
experience at both the middle school and high school levels in Fairfax County, VA and
Charlotte, NC. At Battlefield she will be working with students in all four grade levels to assist
with college and career research, exploration, and planning. Welcome, Mrs. Malone!
Course Selection for 2017-2018
The counselors have finished individual course selection meetings with students for the 2017-
2018 school year. Students are reminded to return the yellow copy of their course selection form
with parent/guardian signature to the Counseling Center as soon as possible. Course selection
verification letters will be sent home to students and parents/guardians in May so that you may
finalize course requests or make adjustments as needed. While the deadline to submit course
request changes for the 2017-2018 school year is Friday, June 2, 2017, students and
parents/guardians are reminded that decisions regarding the closing or cancelation of classes for
next year may be made prior to that date based on student interest, budget, and staffing.
Students Taking Dual Enrollment Courses at Battlefield in 2017-2018
All students who are registered to take one or more NOVA dual enrollment classes at Battlefield
next year as primary or alternate requests must submit their completed NOVA dual enrollment
intent form to the Counseling office with student and parent/guardian signature by Friday, April
21st. Don’t miss this deadline!
Students Taking Robotics in 2017-2018
All students who are registered to take Robotics I or Robotics II as primary or alternate requests
must submit their Robotics contract to the Counseling office with student and parent/guardian
signature by Friday, April 21st. Don’t miss this deadline!

Grade Curriculum The counselors are looking forward to working with all tenth graders in the computer labs in
April! We will administer the “Cluster Finder” career interest inventory in Family Connection
and introduce “Holland Code Personality Types” to help students identify a possible career
match which would align with their interests and abilities. We arranged this lesson to coincide
with the tenth grade career curriculum in English classes in which students created resumes and
participated in mock interviews. Please discuss this career match with your child and his/her
plan to further investigate Career Clusters and possible career pathways. We encourage students
to choose high school courses which support their career interests and to use “Super College
Match” on Family Connection to research colleges with possible majors which support their
career plans. Today’s planning opens the door to tomorrow’s opportunities!

Senior Survey Each year we are required to gather survey data from every member of the senior class regarding
post-secondary plans, college acceptance, and scholarship awards. All seniors must complete
the senior survey on Family Connection in by Friday, May 5th. The survey will be posted in
Family Connection in mid-April. Seniors should log into Family Connection, click on the
“About Me” tab, and click on the “PWCS Senior Survey 2017” link at the top left side of the
page. The survey must be completed in one sitting; seniors will not be able to re-open the survey
to edit their responses after they click “Submit Answers”. Completing the survey is a senior
obligation; seniors who have not completed a senior survey will not be able to complete senior
clearance. Any senior who is having difficulty logging into Family Connection or completing
the survey should go to the Counseling Center for assistance.
Senior Awards Night Seniors who wish to be recognized at Senior Awards Night on Monday, May 22
nd must list
scholarships and amount of scholarship awarded when they complete their senior survey, and
bring official documentation of their scholarship award(s) to Mrs. Smith in the Counseling
Center by Friday, May 5th
. Seniors who do not provide official documentation to Mrs. Smith
by May 5th
will not be recognized at Senior Awards Night. Contact Mrs. Smith at
[email protected] if you have any questions.
Junior Year Planning Guide
The college application process begins during junior year. It is the last complete school year on
high school transcripts when students apply to colleges in the fall of their senior year. This may
be the last opportunity for students to fill in any gaps in their academic or activity records. An
important year, there are several suggestions that can help students and parents prepare for senior
year, graduation, and the future.
Junior year grades are critical; students need to learn how to study
Continue to explore interests and plans for the future
Consider volunteer work or a shadowing experience to learn more about career interests
Gain a full understanding of the graduation requirements, including the required
courses, SOLs, and CTE certification exams
Any student in need of additional credits should speak with his/her counselor regarding
summer school, Virtual High School, night school, and dual enrollment options
Select appropriate classes for senior year; consider challenging courses (such as taking
the extra year of math, science, or foreign language)

Counseling (cont’d.)
If your student is planning to attend college, the following may be helpful:
Review PSAT scores, register and prepare for the SAT and/or ACT
Attend college fairs and financial aid workshops
Begin researching colleges and make a list of about 15-20 possibilities
Visit college campuses
Encourage students to prepare for the AP Exams in May
Have discussions with your student about colleges, your expectations, and financial
situation
Research scholarship opportunities
Remain active in extracurricular activities
Right now, juniors should be…
Registering for the May or June SAT and/or ACT
Beginning to compile their academic resume
Registering with the NCAA if they would like to participate in Division I and Division II
athletics
Maintaining or improving their grades
Preparing for the AP Exams and/or SOLs
Speaking with their counselor as soon as possible if interested in seeking an appointment
to a military academy
Finalizing their senior year course selections with their counselor
Continuing to build relationships with their teachers, which is important for letters of
recommendation in the future
Beginning to research colleges and other post-high school opportunities
Using Family Connection (students who do not know their log in information should
speak with one of the Counseling office secretaries)
This summer…
Visit college campuses
Work
Volunteer
SAT/ACT prep
Research
Begin looking at college applications and essays
Look for summer enrichment programs, athletic camps, summer programs at colleges,
etc.

Governor’s Early College Scholars Program The Governor’s Early College Scholars Program is intended to encourage eligible high school
students to complete requirements for a high school diploma and concurrently earn at least 15
hours of transferable credits toward a college degree. This program can potentially result in a
more productive senior year and reduce the amount of college tuition for families. Students
earning a college degree in seven semesters instead of eight can save an average of $5,000 in
college expenses.
The Governor’s Early College Scholars Program agreement may be signed at any time, from
ninth to twelfth grade. Participants agree to: (1) earn an Advanced Studies diploma with a
Governor’s Seal and (2) earn at least 15 transferable college credits while enrolled in high
school. Interested students can download the Early College Scholars Agreement at the
“Documents & Downloads” menu of the Counseling Center webpage or pick one up in the
Counseling Center. Completed forms should be returned to the Counseling Center.
Reminder
The Counseling Center staff provides academic, personal/social, and career counseling to all
students and offer support and assistance to parents/guardians and staff. Please check our
website and future newsletters for information regarding classroom core curriculum activities
and counseling services. Please contact your student’s counselor if you have any questions or
concerns.

NOVA placement tests will offered at Battlefield HS, April 18th-21st, at 2pm, in lab 2113. The
placement tests are available for students wishing to take dual enrollment classes next year, as
well as seniors who may attend NOVA. Students do not need to register at Battlefield for the
test, they only need to show up at the testing location AND have a NOVA ID number.
Please note: Current freshmen in the IT program must score Eng 111 on the VPT English
placement test, as well as have a 3.0 GPA to be eligible for dual enrollment classes. In addition,
if a freshman registers for Database DE, they must also pass the math placement test.
If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Huddle [email protected] or your counselor.

5 Surprising Facts about Strawberries
1. Strawberries are high in vitamin C and fiber.
Vitamin C is important for growing and repairing tissue as well as wound healing, while fiber
is used by the body for digestion.
2. There are about 200 seeds on the outside of the average strawberry.
Because strawberries have seeds on the outside, plant scientists do not consider strawberries
to be real berries. Berries, like blue berries and raspberries, have their seeds on the inside.
3. Strawberries belong to the rose family.
A strawberry plant has a nice fragrant smell just like strawberries.
4. Every state in the U.S. grows strawberries.
However, California alone produces 75% of the strawberry crops used in the United States.
Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) serves local, Virginia strawberries whenever
available!
5. Over half of a strawberry plant’s roots are found in the top three inches of soil.
The plant’s roots stay close to the top so they can spread out above the soil and form more
plants.
You can find fresh strawberries in PWCS cafeterias all year long. Come join us for lunch and try

End of Year Reminders from The Cafeteria
It is requested that all unpaid cafeteria balances be paid by the end of the year; unpaid balances
will remain on your students’ account for the following school year.
The cafeteria gives refunds only to those students who will not be attending a Prince William
County School the following year. (Remaining positive account balances will roll over into the
next school year.) Parents with a refund request can contact the cafeteria manager at your
school.
Parents of Graduating Seniors
We request that you do not send in large sums of monies with your student during the months of
May and June. All account monies are bank deposited each day; therefore, it is difficult for us to
refund large account balances. Students who have siblings currently at Battlefield or at other
Prince William County Schools may have any remaining money transferred into their siblings’
account. Please contact the cafeteria manager if you would like to take advantage of this option.
*****Seniors are required to clear any cafeteria debt as part of their graduation
requirement. While we have enjoyed the privilege of being a part of their lives, we would
like to see them move on to bigger and better things! *****
*****myschoolbucks.com accounts need to be disabled before requesting a refund****

On February 14th, eight students enrolled in AP Biology participated in the United States of America
Biology Olympiad competition. Biology Olympiad is a premiere biology competition for high school
students. Its goal is to enrich life science education. It provides the motivation and skills training to take
them beyond their classroom experience to the level of international competitiveness. If students are in
the top 20% of the more than 10,000 students who took the test nationwide, they will be invited to
participate in the semi-final examination. If they are a national finalist, they will be invited to participate
in the International Biology Olympiad competition this summer in Hanoi Vietnam. All high school
students are eligible to participate in Biology Olympiad. Enrollment in the biology class is not a
prerequisite.
On February 17th, Science National Honor Society hosted Family Science Night. Members of SNHS
spent the week planning hands-on activities and demos for students and their families. Some of the
experiments highlighted at the event were: making curds and whey, bending water with static
electricity, exploring properties of dry ice, lighting money on fire, creating drinkable density columns,
making flubber and much more.
