There is certainly no shortage of Flags and Bunting about the place - so many groups and businesses making a real effort to decorate our streets. It seems the whole of the UK has Jubilee Fever - and I for one will be joining in and celebrating the achievements of our Queen.

L ost Chord, based in Maltby is a charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and wellbeing, of people living in residential homes and struggling with dementia, by helping them to communicate through the power of music, song and dance. By using interactive musical sessions our professional musicians strive to stimulate those areas of the brain

which are still responding for those who may be unable to walk, talk, feed themselves or communicate in any way

Lost Chord relies totally on grant funding and voluntary donations to help affect the lives of thousands of sufferers living in residential homes. We currently organise more than 1100 musical sessions a year in over 100 venues on the scheme. This includes 13 residential homes in the Doncaster region affecting the lives of hundreds of people in your community.

The evidence of the power of live music in unlocking memories for people with dementia is striking and undeniable and their sense of achievement is overwhelming. This helps confirm clinical evidence that there are certain areas of the brain associated with music that remain potentially responsive, when all other areas have deteriorated. Our achievements:

Some who are unable to communicate speak for the first time in months Some who have not spoken for some time often sing all the words to familiar songs. Some with aggressive tendencies can become visibly calmed. Those who are confused and unable to sit for any length of time are often still and sit for far longer than anyone thought possible.

There are more than 800,000 people diagnosed with dementia in the UK and this figure is set to double by 2050. Dementia is the biggest killer in the UK second only to heart disease.

In order to keep our current programmes running we need to raise £270,000 each year. Sadly we always have a waiting list of homes all desperate to utilise our services therefore support from local businesses and the community is vital. S ponsored horse ride in aid of local charities Two well loved local charities are calling all horse riders to bring their horses to take part in a sponsored ride on the beautiful and exclusive Osberton estate near Worksop.

SAFE@LAST, a charity that works across South Yorkshire with young people at risk through running away, and Helen’s Trust, who support people with terminal illness to be cared for and to die at home throughout North Derbyshire and Sheffield, are organising the event to raise funds and awareness in order to continue their vital work.

The event takes place on Sunday 10th June and two routes will be available covering either approximately 12 or 6 miles. The routes will take in the beautiful surroundings of the Osberton estate and will include areas not usually open to the public. There will even be some optional jumps for those who want to add a little more to the day.

SAFE@LAST Communications Manager Clare Sherratt said “We’re very excited to be working with Helen’s Trust on this exciting event which is new to both charities. We hope lots of people will come and support these fantastic charities and have a great day out with their horses.”

W heatley Village Plans to Celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee with some Open Gardens

On the weekend of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee there will be lots of activity and

entertainment in Wheatley. On Sunday 3rd June there will be an Open Garden event in aid of Wheatley Church funds, where six village gardens will be opened to the public at £4 pp. for adults. (Children under 14 years free) Each garden will display various settings and features in line with the season. The village hall will be open for refreshments, a plant stall and will provide free parking. Visitors can pick up information and a map at any of the locations which will be easy to identify. Organiser Charlotte Lister from Doncaster said: “Everyone involved from The Crown Hotel to the boutiques, models, photographers have all done this on a voluntary basis to help make sure as much of the profits go straight to the charity. 'Vaccies' Bawtry Phoenix Theatre 11th to 14th July.

The Phoenix Young Players (the youth group of Bawtry Dramatic Society) will be putting on their Summer play from 11th - 14th July at the Phoenix Theatre in Bawtry. The play is called 'Vaccies' which was a commonly used nickname for evacuated children during the Second World War. Written by Tony Jones (himself once a 'vaccie') and directed by Tony and Sarah Cowan, the play follows the story of a group of children from London who are evacuated to a North Yorkshire village. It begins with their hostile reception in the village and their feuds with the local children at school. Kenny and Mary are billeted with abusive and exploitative foster parents. Reconciliation and friendship with the local children results in an ambitious plan to rescue them but things don't turn out as they expected.

To celebrate 80 years of theatre in Bawtry, the Phoenix Theatre on Station Rd will be holding a Performing Arts Festival in September 2012. Celebrations at Idle Valley Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust own and manage the Idle Valley Nature Reserve just off North Road, (A638), Retford. We have just celebrated our first anniversary of providing visitor reception facilities to the public and we couldn’t have done it without our volunteers, so a big Thank You to all of them, past and present. A big thank you also goes to all our visitors – every visit to the reserve counts and supports our work to protect wildlife for the future so please keep popping back to see us and see what we’re up to.

It’s also time for our Summer Fayre on Sat 23rd June and this year our featured artist is Gary Jones, www.flickr.com/photos/thephotopainter who specialises in extreme close-up photography of insects. Gary is bringing his equipment to demonstrate how he takes the photos which is a great introduction to inspire you to pick up your camera this summer and autumn to take your own photos ready to enter our photography competition in November this year.

The birds are busy nesting now so it’s an excellent time to look out for dragonflies and butterflies! Historically, we have recorded white-letter hairstreak, brown argus, common blue, small copper, orange tip, small tortoiseshell, green-veined white, red admiral and brimstone butterflies, also black-tailed skimmer, four-spot chaser, banded demoiselle, blue tailed damselfly and large red damselfly. No formal insect surveys have been carried out on the reserve yet, so if you are interested in helping us with our records, please contact James Simpson, Reserve Officer on 01777 713944 or [email protected]. Fundraising weekend at Sandbeck Park for SAFE@LAST

Local Children’s Charity, SAFE@LAST, has benefited from two fundraising events held at the weekend at Sandbeck Park, the stately home of Lord and Lady Scarbrough.

The SAFE@LAST Annual Clay Shoot Trophy returned on Saturday 21st April and the event was generously sponsored by Torne Valley Farm and Country Stores. The event has been held on the magnificent country estate, Sandbeck Park near Maltby, the home of the Earl and Countess of Scarbrough , for six years.

A ladies event followed on the Sunday with a Fashion Show and Afternoon tea. The event was organized by the Doncaster St. Leger Inner Wheel Club which has chosen SAFE@LAST as its special charity during the year.

Guests enjoyed a catwalk show featuring the clothes and accessories of Yasmine of Bawtry, followed by afternoon tea in the large marquee on the lawn. Finalists from the Miss South Yorkshire competition were some of the models showing off an exciting range of stylish casual through to evening and special occasions wear.

It is hoped that the weekend will have raised over £10,000 to enable SAFE@LAST to continue delivering services to vulnerable children and young people across South Yorkshire.

Lord Scarbrough, Patron of SAFE@LAST said “My wife and I are always pleased to support SAFE@LAST and young runaways by hosting such well organised and diverse events. We were particularly thrilled to welcome new guests to both events as well as some familiar faces. T he Drama Queens give a Jubilee Performance The Village Player (Everton) are joining in the Everton Village Queen’s Jubilee celebrations with their own special Jubilee production entitled: “The Drama Queens are back”

This features two one act comedies from the “Deck Chair” series of plays by Jean McConnell: “Dancers” and “Day Trippers”, plus a special surprise entertainment, in keeping with the general theme of light-hearted fun.

The two plays are the funniest of a foursome of Jean McConnell plays last performed by the Players in February 2011.

In order to integrate with other Queen’s Jubilee events in Everton, the Players will be performing on two nights only. As part of the celebrations they are charging a special ticket price of only £3, to include a free glass of wine or a soft drink in the interval.

The performances will take place on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th June at 7:30pm in Everton Village Hall, where playgoers will also be able to see Everton’s new Jubilee wall hanging, celebrating all the village’s organisations.

I 've been in and around churches for over 30 years now and I've noticed a few things about what goes on. One observation that always makes me laugh is that if you offer food then more people than normal manage to turn up. And we Christians do like to eat together; any excuse for a communal lunch or tea and we grab it. On Easter Sunday, for example, we

advertised breakfast, complete with bacon sandwiches, before the service and - you've guessed it - we had a great crowd of folk. I've seen this truth in operation not only in Britain but equally, if not more so, in the other countries I've lived in - Kenya, Mexico and Morocco. Let me tell you, if you ever get the chance to join a church picnic in Mexico, then I suggest you jump at it - the food as those events is fantastic.

Human beings were built to be communal (no man is an island said John Donne, and the Bible agrees with him) and to truly celebrate life's key events - in the Old Testament, community milestones were so important that the people were instructed to give 10% of their income towards joint celebrations, they must have been amazing parties. This is why I am encouraging you to support the national Big Lunch event on 3 June - anything that builds community is terrific and if trestle tables need to be used, then all the better. Whether you support the monarchy or not, I recommend that you get together with your neighbours and enjoy the meal together - you'll be surprised at what fun you'll have as well as getting to know your neighbours better.

Whether you manage to get to the Big Lunch or not, I suggest you start going along to one of Bawtry's churches, you'll find a great community spirit, help with the important issues of life and, occasionally, with bacon sandwiches thrown in.

June Arts Review

The Season of Sculpture Parks is upon us. Once upon a time there was only the YSP and now everywhere you go you trip over sculpture lurking in herbaceous borders of stately homes and arboretums. Why do they do it?…well it must be because you - the cultural visitor enjoys them – and since they are all at it – there must be huge interest out there, the exhibitions keeps the gardens functioning and lively when the full flush of summer flowering is waning – these are hugely costly events to mount when you think about what darned heavy stuff sculpture is. Already open is Burghley at Stamford – famous for its equestrian 3 day event and fabulous Elizabethan mansion . The sculpture - a mixed exhibition entitled all encompassing ‘Fauna and Flora’ is sited in a lovely large garden of mixed areas which is of interest to plant and tree enthusiasts. This summer the Yorkshire Sculpture Park at West Bretton is exhibiting sculpture by the major 20th century Spanish surrealist artist Joan Miro. This continues until January 2013. YSP has become a day-out destination. A great café, fab shop and lots to look at in its vast grounds. Over the past few years the main summer exhibition has been by living contemporary sculptors. www.ysp.co.uk

Closer to home is Doddington, just north of Newark. This is the first year that the gardens of Doddington have hosted sculpture and they are to site over 250 pieces by 60 sculptors which will be open through August. Doddington is a wonderful setting and an interesting Elizabethan house which has remained in the same family since it was built and one of only two whose original gardens that have not been updated and destroyed with ongoing garden design fashion through the centuries ( the other being Hardwick Hall). Doddington escaped this ignominy because the family owned other properties and didn’t bother to redesign this one! www.doddingtonhall.com

A one week only sculpture event happens in Harpswell near Gainsborough from 16 to 24 June at Hall Farm, sited in the 3 acre garden. During this week there will be a craft tent, musicians performing at the weekends and plants for sale. www.the-ropewalk.co.uk/sap10/sap09.htm

Leicester University Botanic Garden, 3 miles south of the city centre, has for the past 11 years staged a large exhibition of sculpture in its 16 acre site, attracting 30,000 visitors every year. This years show is entitled ‘Interesting Times’ . The curator has put together a group of sculptures that demonstrate that nature can be cruel and unpredictable whilst at the same time being beautiful. 1st July to 28 October. www2.le.ac.uk

Also there is Chatsworth. From March to 1st July Anthony Caro’s sculpture surrounds the lake, and to finish off the season from 7 September until the end of October Sothebys will be clearing out their cupboards again and strewing stuff around the grounds. Last year’s Sothebys show, considering the hugeness and quantity of work was a big disappointment. It really did feel like they had found some stuff at the bottom of the old barrel and shipped it in. The most awful of all the work there were 2 enormous painted bronze Damien-enfant-terrible-Hurst horses ( a unicorn and a Pegasus) which were sited at the bottom end of the lake, like 2 bits of detritus blowing around a well loved beauty spot. One of my most un-favourite of British sculptors is Lynn Chadwick (1914 – 2003), - unemotional mannered stylised posed.... no - I am not a fan - and I have to say I enjoyed his work the most. Enough said. B minus Sothebys. Lets hope there is some better work this year. Chatsworth does have its own permanent sculpture collection and the work that the Duke of Devonshire has commissioned and sited is much better. One of the most recent additions are huge woven structures near the kitchen garden by Derby based Laura Ellen Bacon. She worked on site weaving these bulbous shapes in willow over still rooted old trees. These alone are worth the entrance fee to the grounds. http://www.chatsworth.org/attractions/sculpture Tickhill Artist Bryan Day’s exhibition at Brevon Art, Doncaster Bryan Day was born in 1934 and brought up in Maltby and Tickhill before moving to Carlisle in 1959 . He now lives in Tickhill after 50 years away. After holding many one man shows throughout the UK and abroad, he is currently concentrating specifically on watercolour and has developed a semi-abstract approach to his work.

Airport & Tunnel Tech Complaints. Can we remind all residents that complaints should be referred to the telephone numbers/email addresses at the end of this newsletter, so that the complaints can be logged by the appropriate authority. The new contact email for Tunnel Tech complaints is: [email protected] It is very important that residents lodge their complaints, so that accurate records may be kept by the authorities concerned, for possible future use. Youth Club DMBC staff are now running the youth club every fortnight on a Friday evening from 6pm to 8pm in the lower room at the Methodist church. Supporting the activity may ensure it continues. Gainsborough Road Toilets Vandals have struck at the gents toilets causing damage to the turnstile (all for the sake of 20p), and Council will be considering the best way manage this facility in the future. A monitoring system is in place and acts of vandalism will not be tolerated.

I am writing on behalf of my friend who lives in Bawtry, who sadly lost her beloved pet cat Minx on Monday the 15th of May. She had wandered into the neighbours garden where their three legged grey hound savagely killed her. There is very little the RSPCA can do as the cat went into their property.

The most distressing thing about the situation is that the dogs owner had told my friend on the Sunday that the dog had already killed 2 cats yet the very next morning Minx was sadly killed.

The dog owner offered no condolences or support. How can any cat owner living in Bawtry sleep at night knowing that this dog could kill their cat at anytime.

A dog can be controlled yet how do you stop a cat from wandering?

I would like all residents in Bawtry to be on there guard for this dog if they own a cat! The dog is not to blame but measures should be put in place to stop innocent pets been killed. The owner has shown no remorse for the people who have sadly lost pets.
