Bay Harbor Islands was once again named one of the Safest Cities in Florida with populations over 5,000. Kudos to Chief Sean Hemingway, the entire Bay Harbor Islands Police Department and Town staff for everything you do to keep our Town safe. Congratulations are also in order for Council member Isaac Salver on his being voted 1st Vice President of the Florida League of Cities. You make us all very proud. I also want to congratulate our entire Town council on its ability to come together to achieve the collaborative efforts with our neigh- boring municipalities that have recently enabled us to co-fund the new Skate Park and a full-time School Resource Officer. Our children are our most precious resource so keeping them healthy and safe are both of utmost importance. Speaking of children - if you have the need, you still have time to register your kids for one of our popular after-school programs and to register yourself for something special as well. Just stop by the Morris N. Broad Community Center on 95th Street. I hope you will take the time to come to our annual September 11 observance, to be held this year in front of the Morris N. Broad Community Center. It is always a poignant event and definitely worth making the time. I also encourage all our residents to attend the upcoming 2018-19 Budget Hearings on Monday, September 17 at 7 p.m. and Wednesday, September 26 at 7 p.m. We also have Pizza with the Bay Harbor Police on the 26th from 7-8 p.m. Finally, if you are a car collector - I encourage you to sign up your car for our Car show on Kane Concourse set for October 21st. Spaces are filling up fast and we’d love to have some of our own residents take home those trophies!

TOWN COUNCIL UPDATE

BHI Joins in Skate Park Ribbon Cutting at Haulover Beach

Cutting the ribbon are (L-R) Bay Harbor Islands Council member Jordan W. Leonard, Bal Harbour Mayor Gabriel Groisman, Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez Miami-Dade Commissioner Sally Heyman, Sunny Isles Beach Mayor Bud Scholl and Surfside Mayor Daniel Dietch.

The August 7 ribbon-cutting to offi-cially open the 7,500 square-foot hybrid skate park and pump track at Haulover Beach Park was a victory for Bay Harbor Islands and local municipalities that joined forces to provide their residents a new and exciting recreational source. The fee-free skate park and pump track located next to the dog park on the ocean-side of Haulover, was developed and funded in collaboration with Bay Harbor Islands, Miami-Dade County, Bal Harbour, Miami Beach, Sunny Isles Beach and Surfside.

(L-R) BHI Town Manager Ron Wasson, Assistant Manager JC Jimenez, Council members Isaac Salver, Robert Yaffe, Jordan W. Leonard and his children Bella and Josh, Council member Kelly Reid and Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally Heyman.

BHI Council Members Attend Florida League Conference Isaac Salver Elected First Vice President

Bay Harbor Islands Council members attended the Florida League of Cities 92nd Annual Conference, held August 16-18 at The Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, FL. Officials attended presentations and workshops and celebrated 50 years of Constitutional Home Rule in Florida. Florida voters ratified this authority at the 1968 Florida Constitution, giving cities the right to perform municipal functions and deliver services without express permission from the state, except as otherwise provided by law.

Annual elections were also held during the conference and BHI Council member Isaac Salver was elected 1st Vice President for the 2018-2019 term.

Founded in 1922 on the belief that local self-government is the keystone of American democracy, the Florida League of Cities is the united voice for Florida’s munici-pal governments.

(L-R) 1st Vice President Isaac Salver, President Leo E. Longworth, Mayor of Bartow, and 2nd Vice President Tony Ortiz (R),

Bay Harbor Islands Vice Mayor Josh Fuller (center) served on a panel regarding land use.

MPS Superheroes Get a Boost from Bay Harbor IslandsAt the August meet-

ing the Bay Harbor Islands Council agreed to make MPS Superhero Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organiza-tion, the beneficiary of funds raised by the Town’s annual 2019 5K/10K Run-Walk. The group is working to raise $2,500,000 for clinical trials to find a cure of a rare genetic metabolic disease called Mucopolysaccharidosis II (MPS II) also known as Hunter Syndrome.

The group of parents and their supporters attended the meeting to raise aware-ness and seek donations. For more information on Hunter syndrome and the local awareness effort go to www.mpsSuperHero.org. Parents Monica and Avram founded MPS Superhero when their son Kalel was diagnosed with MPS II. The disease affects the organs and brains of young boys, causing cognitive regression. The average life span for someone with MPS II is 12-15 years.

Scheduled larvicide treatments by truck by Miami-Dade County Mosquito Control are planned for Thurs-day, September 6 and 20 and on Thursday, October 4. The time-window in which treatments are to occur is between the hours of 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. The treatments are strictly proactive and not in response to any immediate threat regarding Zika or any other mosquito borne disease. Public Works Cleaning Out Town’s Stormwater Drains

The Bay Harbor Islands Public Works staff has been busy clearing barnacles from the Town’s stormwater outlets. By removing these blockages that would prevent stormwa-ter from reaching the bay, the Public Works staff prevent flooding and standing water during this peak period of rainstorms and tropical weather.
