Bay Shore, NY Fontana, CA Fairfield, OH Vol. 36 • Summer2014 Stress is Good G G O O O O D D T T M M E E S S ® Almost every day while driving to or from work, I witness drivers that would kill another driver if only they had a weapon. “Road Rage” seems to be a phrase that has been coined in the late ‘90’s and is continuing into this millennium. I began to think this was a New York phenomenon, but after traveling most of the country, I found it to be nationwide. Actually, I read that in California there have been some killings due to “Road Rage”. Personally, I have found myself getting very aggravated with other drivers who make inane moves on the road and I, too, have been tempted to retaliate in some manner. Is it really worth the added stress? The American Heritage Dictionary defines stress as “physical or mental overexertion”. When a person stresses a muscle by overexertion, it can usually be healed by slowing down and taking a break from a particular activity. For example, pounding out four buckets of golf balls at the driving range in an hour is overdoing it! Something is bound to be hurting after that excessive activity. With physical stress, the cause and effect are fairly clear. Mental stress is another ball game. Mental stress can lead to physical troubles and are not always crystal clear. During a normal day, everyone is faced with various levels of stress. From children to retired adults, all of us experience many levels of stress that occur during all of our waking hours. Too frequently, I have found myself with neck, back, and even jaw pain, having no clue as to what was wrong with me. After some self- analysis, it was clear that mental stress got the best of me and I realized it was time to get it under control. Eliminate the non-important stresses in your day. If that driver wants to cut you off to get himself to work 30 seconds earlier, then let him do it and smile; it is really not a big deal. When you get to the office and spill your coffee on your desk, use it as a good excuse to clean up and get better organized. At lunchtime, you may find your favorite pizza shop has a long line; wait it out rather than running like crazy to find a place that might have a shorter line. This kind of stress is not worth your while and will assist you in having a “bad day”. Save yourself and your body for important busi- ness and family situations. Those are important issues where stress is actually good. You can use this stress as positive energy that will steer you toward making good decisions both personally and in business. I find that this type of stress, usually caused by a problem, will get me motivated to either calling a meeting at work or planning a quiet dinner with my wife, getting things ironed out before they escalate into a more significant situation. I have certainly found this “stress control” to be very helpful and hope that you can also utilize some of these practices to help you relax a bit and take life “easier”.

Peter Fee, Director of OperationsI started my career with Fairchild Republic buildingthe A10 fighter jet as an Industrial Engineer in theMachine Shop after getting an Associate’s Degreein Mechanical Technology anda Bachelor of Science inIndustrial Engineering atthe State UniversityColleges at Farmingdaleand Buffalo. After a seriesof quick steps I wasbrought onboard as thefirst ManufacturingEngineer with a small startup company by the nameof Symbol Technologies inHauppauge. Over the next13 years I grew with thecompany building a staff ofengineers, establishing newsystems, new teams and two factory moves before moving into TechnicalMarketing and then Quality. Along the way I gotmy Masters in Operations Management from NYU.

I left Symbol in 1994 for an opportunity with theAdemco Group (now part of Honeywell) asDirector of Operations Engineering with responsi-bility for all manufacturing support at two siteswith a staff of 71 engineers and support people.As is now the norm in the business world, weeventually shifted all manufacturing to the lowercost enter in Mexico under Honeywell’s directiveand I decided to leave the company rather thanrelocate. My next opportunity landed me withD’Addario & Company as their Director ofOperations, a privately held company which man-ufactures musical accessories including guitarstrings and drum heads, in fact they make morethan 300,000 strings a day! There I worked withmy teams to improve productivity, shipping fillrates and eliminating order errors to name justa few.

After parting ways I did some consulting workbefore returning to Symbol Technologies, nowpart of Motorola as a Senior Program Manager inEngineering where I was responsible to supportseveral products directing and coordinatingEngineering and Manufacturing teams in China,Israel, India and the U.S. Not wanting to spendthe rest of my career with a phone attached to myear I left and returned to manufacturing withTelephonics then with Davis Vision where I wastasked with transforming a lab operation into amanufacturing process, making up to 4,000 pairsof prescription eyeglasses a day.

So my latest and most exciting challenge lands mehere with Duro Dyne.

manufacturing experience from electronics tooptics to machining, molding, printing and eveneyeglasses! The common theme throughout is theprocess. You can break anything down to aprocess and evaluate each step to improve theoverall product or the way it is constructed. You’llsee a lot of information about Lean Manufacturing,Six Sigma, etc., but at the core of all is commonsense. Most times when you take a step back andan objective look you can improve anything.And remember this; you can’t fix it if you can’tmeasure it.
