ANZAC Day Ceremony Communities and Families

We have over the last years marked the centenary of the start of the First World War, the „war to end all wars‟. In particular ANZAC Day. Far from being over by Christmas, „The

Great War‟, as it came to be known, ended up being an event that no-one imagined would still have its effects today.

The war itself lasted for 4 long years. Over this time not only were soldiers, sailors and airmen effected but also all other people in our community suffered hardship.

Each and everyone have a story to tell.

It is estimated that between 1914 and 1918, ten million soldiers and seven million civilians lost their lives. Another 20 million were hurt.

These are very big numbers and it is hard to imagine all of those people gathered in one space.

Included in this list were those we needed, once the war was over, to make and keep our community healthy and safe. These included doctors and nurses as well as Mums and Dads who normally would look after their families at home.

So after the war was over in 1918, with many of these people not around to help, a world-wide flue pandemic occurred. This caused many millions more people both

young and old to become sick and die.

Many families, towns and cities took a very long time to get back to their best.

Today is a chance to hear how „Communities and Families‟ go by.

We are very fortunate to have with us a number of staff and a grandparent to share their „Community and Family‟ stories.

ANZAC Program

Annika was introduced by Clarenz and Ryan who acted as our Masters of Ceremony for today‟s Anzac Day Commemoration Ceremony.

Her reading, set the scene for the Special Guests and their presentations around the “Community and Family” theme.

The special guests helped us to gain a better understanding as to how conflict effects our lives. We would like to thank : Mrs Lucas, Mrs Turner, Ms Seal for sharing their stories.

A special thank you to Jack Gillespie for his bagpipe lament and sounding of the Last Post and Rouse. It was stirring stuff.

Congratulations to all concerned!

Anzac Day Commemorative Ceremony Year 6 Leadership

Our school‟s, Community Anzac Day Ceremony is one of the many opportunities set up over the year for our Year 6 students to build their leadership skills and capacity. As many of you know, putting on an event like an Anzac Day Ceremony involves lots of steps covering both leadership and management. One of the steps, is to review and provide positive feedback to your team once the event is over.

This morning after the event the members of the ANZAC Day student Leadership Team met to undertake the important review and feedback stage. I would like to share with you some of the points expressed by the Year 6 students at the meeting:

“I learnt that being a leader and helping organising something takes time and extra effort.” “It takes courage and responsibility to help out people you don’t know.” “What I learnt from doing a leadership role, is that people look up to you. Through their body language they seem to be asking you to provide them with some guidance.”

On behalf of today‟s Year 6 Leadership Team I would like to thank all those people who attended today. You provided them with a real life context to develop their leadership skills.

2017 Kindergarten Enrolments Enrolments for our Kindergarten Program for 2017 are now open. Parents who would like to apply for a place for their child are asked to complete an Application for Enrolment Form. These forms are available at the school office.

Please contact the school if you would like a form emailed to you. The closing date for these to be submitted to the school is Friday, 22 July 2016 (Term 3, Week 1). Parents should receive a letter accepting or declining their application by Friday, 19 August 2016 (Week 5, Term 3).

Making Payments to the School and P&C Association

Here is some information for the protocols to follow when paying monies to the school. There are a few different ways families can make payments and we would like to ensure that all families are paying money into the correct accounts and via the correct method.

Paying by Cash or Cheque to the School Voluntary Contributions can be paid to the front office. Payments for incursions and excursions and any other events relating to a payment for an individual student need to be made through the classroom teacher, via the classroom money collection books.

Paying by Direct Bank Transfer The Schools account details are; Name: Commonwealth Bank– Bayswater Primary School BSB: 066101 Account number: 10036360

Please ensure you reference any online payment with your child's first initial, full surname, room number and the event you are paying for. Sometimes there will not be enough room to include all the information in the reference so to ensure that all the online payments are allocated to the correct students we ask that once you have made an online payment please send an email with the details of payment to the school registrar, [email protected], this helps the school allocate all payments made online to the correct student and for the correct event.

Paying the P&C There are three P&C accounts, the Uniform, Canteen and the General account. The general account covers all the fundraising events, the Kindergarten & Pre-primary Committee (KPC) fundraising, muffin morning, gardening, grants, membership fees and the P&C voluntary contribution. Please ensure you make payments to the correct account.

Cash payments for P&C fundraising events can be paid through the office, there is usually a box on the front office desk that money can be paid into. These events include raffles and the various fundraising events that occur over the year. There is a uniform collection box for all uniform orders and a P&C box that any other P&C related money can be placed into.

Canteen orders can be paid by cash each week or you can direct deposit the money into the canteen account to pay in advance and have a credit for child‟s weekly lunch orders. Any online payments need to include a reference of the student and what it is for.

The account details are as follows;

General Account: BSB: 633000 Account number: 112859350 Uniform Account BSB: 633000 Account number: 112859384 Canteen Account BSB: 633 000 Account number 112859475

Paying online is an efficient way for parents to pay for events during the year. However parents need to reference correctly to ensure the money paid is allocated to the right student and to the right event.

Chess Club Chess Club will recommence on Monday, 2 May 2016 (Wk 2) in the library from 3pm till 4pm. Term 2 will be the last term that I will be taking new members. Cost is $90 ($80 each if more than 1 child). Payment to be made on the first club day. Thank you for your ongoing support. Jack South, Chess For Life, Ph 9271 1006, for further details.

President’s Message As P&C President, I see a huge number of people involved in improving the school and its grounds. One of the fantastic committees that has a primary role in improving the local environment for the school is the Gardening Committee.

You will no doubt all be aware of Imaginature, the planned improvements to the Junior playground area that is starting to take shape. The Gardening Committee has been instrumental

in the design and works associated with this area of the school and recently submitted a plan for the remainder of this year to complete a wide range of activities to see the project come to fruition.

I am pleased to announce that, at its last meeting, the P&C voted unanimously to approve over $10,000 in funds for future improvements to this area. This decision was by no means taken lightly by the Committee but was based on careful consideration of the detailed proposal submitted by the Gardening Committee.

Members of the P&C who attended the last meeting were impressed with the level of thought and detail that went into the proposal. It was felt that ongoing improvements to this area would be of huge benefit to the school and its community and would leave a lasting legacy that the P&C and school could be proud of.

I just wanted to acknowledge everyone on the Gardening Committee for the hard work over the years: Alex Ellis, Liz McQueen, Michelle Peters, Felicity Mitchell, Steve Hovitch, Eleanor Reuvers, Margaret Wilson, Janine Turner, Kristi Turner, Laurie Ball, Nicola Scott, Heloise Roberts, Maki Yamamoto

I should also acknowledge the hard work of the P&C in being able to raise the funds in the past years to allow this sort of expenditure to occur. We can‟t wait to see what it will look like once completed.

If you want to get involved with the P&C, Fundraising events or indeed the Gardening Committee, please get in touch. The more people we have on board, the more success stories like Imaginature will be realised at BPS.
