DriveCam – Dash Cam Video System
Project Scope
DriveCam, a provider of video and data collection systems for transportation fleets, asked Bazza Design to assist them in the creation of a new low profile camera product to replace their current more vertically designed dash cam for vehicles. The current design was considered a visual obstruction for forward viewing by some of their customers. DriveCam also planned to include new features with the re-design that required a new packaging of the system. As new features go - the new device was to have two cameras facing in opposite directions. As these devices are intended to be mounted in a vehicle, one camera is intended to point out the windscreen to view the road ahead of the vehicle, and the other camera is intended to point inward, capturing the activities of the driver and as is possible, the activities of the vehicle passengers. It is to include multiple operation buttons and integrated adjustability for various windshield angle positioning. To facilitate operation at night, the device was also have some number of IR LEDs to illuminate the interior of the vehicle. It is imperative that the device is tamper resistant.
Bazza Design employed it’s design process to produce a series of slim line designs that tucked up nicely under the rear view mirror of a vehicle that in turn created minimal obstruction while adding more features to the design.
DriveCam designs were vertically oriented. That cause obscuration issues. It was also limited in features.

Research Phase
Here is a cross section of competitive devices. Most are vertical or cylindrical in form.

Research Phase
Here are relative camera systems. Most all are tied into the rear view mirror. They also look more integrated to the vehicle interior.

ResultsThe overall cross section of competitive products and related designs are very vertical in form and in some cases look like they do not belong in the car.
What we learned from this was the following points to address in the Concept Phases:
- Small Footprint
- Good in-cab feedback – visible buttons and LEDs
- Not distracting – minimal visibility and finishes
- Ruggedized looking
- Feels like it already belongs in the vehicle
- Looks High Value/Premium/Distinctive

Concept Development PhaseSome initial vertical designs were explored based on the packaging size of the internal components. This design exercise proved that DriveCam did not want to proceed with this type of design.

Horizontal forms were then chosen to work on next. The objective of the idea to the right is to minimize the amount of the system protruding below the rear view mirror. In the mounting cases where there is no rear view mirror, the system still appears “small” from the driver’s perspective.
From a side, profile prospective, we think there are opportunities to make the design distinctive by adjusting the curvature as it tapers toward the windscreen.
The design to the left - from a driver facing perspective, the desire is to keep the device appearance as low profile as possible (as described in the previous slide). Stretching the length of the device face (parallel to the rear view mirror),. Is something we would consider.
From a side profile prospective, adjusting the “L-bend” through no bend (e.g., flattening it out like a candy bar) are up for consideration.

Concept Development PhaseWith the details of the last page in mind, many horizontal designs were then explored in sketch form. Position and mechanics of the window mount was considered and vent locations for air circulation was also incorporated into the design.
