FIRST PITCH Texas Tech ventures out of the state of Texas for the first time this season as they take on No. 7 Oklahoma this weekend in Norman. Tech begins a road swing that includes playing 14 of its next 17 games away from Dan Law Field. The Red Raiders are 4-2 in Big 12 play, their best start since 1999. Tech is coming off its second straight series win taking 2-of-3 from Nebraska. The Red Raiders have won 8-of-10 and nine of its last 12 overall. Tech is 3-1 in road competition this season while OU is 13-3 at home.

INSIDE THE SERIES Texas Tech and Oklahoma meet for the 15th consecu-tive year as the Sooners hold a 32-26-1 lead in the all-time series. Tech is 9-16-1 against the Sooners in Norman and haven’t won a series at Oklahoma since 1999. OU has won five of the last eight meetings and 10 of the last 12 matchups in Norman dating back to 2003. Tech won last year’s meeting in Lubbock with wins in two out of three games. Texas Tech won the last matchup in Norman, 5-1, in the series finale in 2009.

JAMODRICK McGRUDER- McGruder was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week on Monday after batting .500 last week against Dallas Baptist and Nebraska. McGruder finished the week reaching base in 9-of-11 plate appearances. He currently leads Tech batting .389 (35-for-90) and with a .529 on-base percentage, 12 hit-by-pitch, four triples and with 17 stolen bases.

DAN SPENCER & PLAYER INTERVIEWSPractices are open to the media and the public. Dan Spencer is 70-69 overall and 29-31 in Big 12 play in his third season as head coach of the Red Raiders. Named the eighth head coach in Texas Tech history during the summer of 2008, Spencer has wasted no time rebuilding the Tech program. His second season as head coach saw the Red Raiders finish fifth in the Big 12 (best finish since 2004) and defeat seven nationally-ranked opponents, which includes an upset over No. 1 Texas, 4-2, in the Big 12 Tournament. In fact, Spencer and the Red Raiders were the only Big 12 team to defeat Texas twice during the 2010 season, as they also picked up a 12-5 victory in Lubbock. The Red Raiders were also just one of two teams in the Big 12 to win a series against College World Series-bound Oklahoma, taking two out of three against the Sooners at Dan Law Field in Lubbock. Spencer’s squad finished 28-29 overall in 2010, matching the program’s most wins since 2006. The Red Raiders led the conference with 162 doubles (most since 2003 – Baylor) to rank seventh

in the country and also led all Big 12 teams with a .310 batting average in conference games. Texas Tech led the Big 12 in batting during league play in 2009 with a .311 average. Spencer’s squad became the first team to lead the conference in batting during Big 12 play in back-to-back seasons since 2003-04 (Baylor). In addition, Texas Tech led the league with 83 doubles during Big 12 games, which is the fourth highest total in Big 12 history and the most since Missouri set the record of 129 in 1997 – the first year of the Big 12 Conference. In only three years (two as head coach), Spencer has coached five Tech student-athletes (four pitchers, one position player) who have been drafted in the top-10 rounds, including four in the top four rounds. Right-handed pitchers Chad Bettis (RHP – 2nd Round – Colorado Rockies) and Bobby Doran (RHP – 4th Round – Houston Astros) were drafted and signed following the 2010 season. Spencer, 45, rejoined the Texas Tech Baseball family on July 2, 2007 when he was named associate head coach on the staff of former head coach Larry Hays. He spent the 2008 season in that role where he coached the pitchers and catchers and headed Tech’s recruiting front. His 2008 pitching staff produced two top-10 round MLB draft picks in juniors Zach Stewart and James Leverton, both of which had never been drafted prior to that season. Stewart was taken in the third round by the Cincinnati Reds while Leverton was taken in the eighth round by the Chicago Cubs. Prior to his arrival at Texas Tech, he spent 11 seasons at Oregon State, the last three as associate head coach, where he served as pitching/catching coach and recruiting coordinator. His pitching staffs during the last two seasons of his Oregon State tenure were instrumental in helping the Beavers become the first back-to-back College World Series Cham-pions since LSU in the late 1990s. In those two seasons, his staffs compiled 3.41 and 3.48 cumulative ERAs while leading the team to 50-16 and 49-18 respective records. His group led the Pac-10 in ERA in both 2005 and 2006 while his bullpen helped pave the way to consecutive national titles by contributing 20-plus saves in both 2006 and 2007. Under his leadership, the Beavers had three pitchers and one catcher named to All-America teams and seven play-ers drafted in the top 10 rounds of the MLB Draft. Eddie Kunz, the ace of the 2007 staff, and catcher Mitch Canham, the squad’s leading hitter, were both first round draft selections in the 2007 MLB Draft. His collegiate coaching career began at the junior college level six years before arriving at Oregon State, as he landed his first job as an assistant coach at Tacoma Community College in Tacoma, Wash., in 1991. After just one season in Tacoma, he picked up his first head coaching position as he took over the program at Green River Community College in 1992. While at Green River, he compiled a record of 131-67 between 1992 and 1996.

TEXAS TECH PLAYS ON ESPNU SATURDAY NIGHT AGAINST SOONERSTexas Tech will play its first of six televised games this season on Saturday night in front of a national audience on ESPNU at 7 p.m. (CT). Mike Gleason (play-by-play) and Kyle Petersen (analyst) will call the action. The Red Raiders and Sooners series finale will be broadcast by the Sooner Sports Network and can be seen on the Sooner All-Access page (www.Soon-erSports.com). SATURDAY MARKS RED RAIDERS FIRST APPEARANCE ON ESPN SINCE 2005 Texas Tech’s game against the Sooners on Saturday will mark the first for the Red Raiders on the ESPN Family of Networks since 2005, when ESPNU also carried all three games of the Tech/OU series in Norman. Tech dropped all three games to the Sooners in that series, 2-5, 5-6, 2-8.

TAKING A LOOK BACKTexas Tech finished a 3-1 week on Sunday with a 3-0 shutout over Nebraska. That gave Tech its second straight Big 12 Conference series win to open the year taking two-of-three from Nebraska. Tech also defeated Dallas Baptist 7-6 in the midweek on March 22. The Red Raiders hadn’t won back-to-back conference series to open the season since 1999.

RED RAIDERS LOOK TO WIN FIRST SERIES OVER OKLAHOMA IN NORMAN SINCE 1999Texas Tech will look to win its first series over Oklahoma in Norman since sweeping the Sooners in 1999. In the last five trips to Norman, Texas Tech has posted a 3-11-1 record against the Sooners.

JAMODRICK McGRUDER NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEKTexas Tech sophomore Jamodrick McGruder was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Monday after batting .500 last week in four games against Dallas Baptist and Nebraska. It marked the first time for McGruder to win the honor and it was the second straight week a Tech player had been honored. It is the first time since the first year of the Big 12 (1997) that Texas Tech players have been honored as the player of the week in back-to-back weeks. DAVID PAIZ DOES IT ALL FOR TEXAS TECHOn Sunday, March 27 against Nebraska, David Paiz became the first Texas Tech player to record a base hit and earn a save on the mound in the same game in over 10 years as the freshman went 1-for-3 at the plate as the starting designated hitter and then entered the game in the eighth inning and pitched 1.2 innings to receive his first career save in Tech’s 3-0 victory over the Huskers.

BARRETT BARNES HAS A 12-GAME HIT STREAKFor the second time this season sophomore Barrett Barnes has had a hit streak reach double figures. Barnes started the season with a 15-game hit streak - dating back to last season. This time Barnes’ streak is at 12 games. He has now hit safely in 23-of-25 games this season.

COMEBACK KIDSTexas Tech used a comeback to either tie or win the game in three consecutive games. Tech overcame a 5-0 deficit against Dallas Baptist (3/22) by scoring five runs in the seventh and then two in the top of the ninth to win the game. In the final game of the Baylor series, Texas Tech scored seven runs in the final four innings - including four in the 10th - to wrap up the series victory. Tech’ largest comeback was scoring nine runs in the ninth inning to erase a 13-4 deficit to tie the game at 13-13. Not included in that number is when Tech broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the ninth inning against Baylor and held on to win in the bottom of the ninth on a diving catch in center field by Barrett Barnes with the bases loaded.

SPEAKING OF COMEBACKS...Texas Tech now has three come-from-behind wins when trailing after eight innings this season to mark the most by the Red Raiders in a season in over 10 years. In fact, in the previous 10 years combined, Texas Tech had just seven come-from-behind wins when trailing after eight innings.

JOHN NEELY IMPROVES TO 6-0 - FASTEST TECH PITCHER TO SIX WINS SINCE 2001John Neely earned his sixth win of the season (tied for the most wins in the nation) during Tech’s 10-8 win over Nebraska on March 26. Neely improved to 6-0 on the season, making him the fastest Tech pitcher to six wins (24 team games) since Chris Phillips notched win No. 6 in the team’s 23rd game of the season in 2001.

MORE ON NEELY...Neely became the first Tech pitcher in over 10 years to earn the win in four consecutive team victories. He is also the first Tech pitcher in over 10 years to earn the win in three games during a four-game span and to be the winning pitcher in four games in a six-game span for the Red Raiders.

NEELY KEEPS GOING AND GOING AND GOING AND GOING...John Neely’s 24.2 innings pitched out of the bullpen this season are the most by a Texas Tech pitcher in over 10 seasons through the first 25 games. Neely has made 13 appear-ances while posting a 6-0 record out of the bullpen this season.

BARRETT BARNES REACHES 100 CAREER BASE HITSSophomore standout Barrett Barnes collected his 100th career hit against Dallas Baptist with a single to left field in the sixth inning. Barnes reached the milestone hit in his 79th career game. That makes Barnes the fastest Red Raider to reach 100 career hits since Roger Kieschnick recorded his 100th hit in 68 games.

TRACKING JAMODRICK McGRUDER’S PATH TO 100 CAREER HITSSophomore Jamodrick McGruder is also nearing his 100th career base hit as the native of Mesquite, Texas, needs six base hits to reach the milestone. McGruder enters the week-end with 76 career games played.

WINNING GAMES ON THE ROADAfter opening the season with 18 consecutive games at home, Texas Tech won three of its first games on the road this year. It marks the first time since 2002 that Tech has won three of its first four road games.



TEXAS TECH RANKS #14 IN THE NATION IN TOTAL ATTENDANCEFollowing the sixth week of the regular season Texas Tech ranks 14th in the nation in total attendance (58,378) and 22nd in the nation in average attendance (2,779). Seven times this season over 3,000 fans have been in attendance at Dan Law Field. Tech had at least 3,000 fans in attendance for every game against No. 8 TCU, with 4,173 fans entering the gates for the series opener on March 4. Texas Tech has ranked among the top 26 in the nation in average attendance per game every season since 1996.

SIX, IS THE MAGIC NUMBERTexas Tech has made the most of its opportunities this season when scoring at least six runs as Tech is 16-2 when posting at least half a dozen runs.

START ME UP!Texas Tech has wasted little time when it comes to getting on the scoreboard in the first inning as the Red Raiders have outscored their opponents 29-13 this season in the first inning. Tech has managed to score at least one run in 14-of-25 games this season in the first inning.

WALK THIS WAYTexas Tech leads the Big 12 Conference lead with 128 walks. Kelby Tomlinson is second in the Big 12 with 23 walks while sophomore Jamodrick McGruder ranks sixth (17) and junior Stephen Hagen is tied for seventh (16). Five Tech players have at least 13 walks on the season. After 25 games, Texas Tech is averaging 5.1 walks per game. Last season Texas Tech averaged 4.3 walks per contest. The Red Raiders rank second in the league with a .422 on-base percentage, just behind Oklahoma’s .423 on-base percentage.

ROLL IT UP!Texas Tech has recorded 34 double plays in 25 games, which leads the Big 12 Confer-ence. Oklahoma State - who has played 25 games - is second in the conference with 33 double plays. Four times already this season Tech has recorded three double plays and in 11 games the Red Raiders have had at least two. Only six times Tech has failed to turn at least one double play in a game this season. In 2010, Texas Tech finished the season with 55 double plays.

NEELY DOING IT ALL IN RELIEF FOR RED RAIDERSJohn Neely has been impressive out of the Red Raiders’ bullpen this season. Neely has now made 13 appearances (all relief ) with a 6-0 record (leads team) and 2.19 ERA (leads team) in 24.2 innings while striking out 27 and walking six batters.

TURN OUT THE LIGHTS, THE PARTY IS OVERIn Dan Spencer’s tenure as head coach at Tech, his team has been rock solid when it comes to holding leads. Since 2009, Texas Tech is 60-5 when leading after six innings, 63-2 when leading after seven innings and 63-1 when leading after eight innings.

ALUMINUM BAT RESTRICTIONS PUT IN PLACE FOR 2011 COLLEGIATE SEASON In an effort to make NCAA collegiate bats more like wooden bats, the aluminum bat restrictions for 2011 are supposed to bring offensive numbers back down to earth after many offensive years of final scores resembling those on football scoreboards. STEPHEN HAGEN NAMED TO NATIONAL ALL-STAR LINEUPJunior first baseman Stephen Hagen was named to the National All-Star Lineup (3/24) after batting .500 (9-for-18) with three multi-hit games, including a 5-for-6 performance with two doubles and a home run against then-No. 14 Baylor. Hagen was one of 16 play-ers in the country named to the All-Star Lineup following the fifth week of the season (March 14-20).

GAME NOTESANDRE WHEELER NAMED TO CB360 NATIONAL PRIMETIME PERFORMERS LISTFreshman outfielder Andre Wheeler was named to the CollegeBaseball360.com Prime-time Performers list for march 14-20. He was one of nine players in the country who made the national list. Wheeler’s clutch performances against Baylor led him to the recognition where he finished the weekend series batting .600 (6-for-10). In Tech’s game-three come-from-behind win against then-No. 14 Baylor, Wheeler drove in the game’s tying run in the ninth inning and then gave Tech a cushion with a two-run single in the top of the 10th.

DANIEL COULOMBE OUT FOR REMAINDER OF THE SEASONJunior left-handed pitcher Daniel Coulombe will miss the remainder of the season after an MRI discovered a torn UCL in his pitching elbow that will require season-ending Tommy John surgery. At the time of his injury (3/11 - vs. Iowa), Coulombe was among team leaders with a 3.98 ERA, 20.1 innings pitched and 28 strikeouts. He finished the season making four appearances (4 starts) with a 0-2 record.

TECH WINS FIRST BIG 12 CONFERENCE SERIES OPENER ON THE ROAD SINCE 1997Texas Tech defeated No. 14 Baylor in the Big 12 Conference opening weekend for its first road series win since 1997. The Six previous opening series on the road Tech was a combined 5-13. Tech knocked off Texas 2-of-3 games in the first season of the Big 12 in 1997 in Austin.

TEXAS TECH SERIES WIN AT BAYLOR IS THE FIRST OVER BEARS IN WACO SINCE 2001Texas Tech had lost three previous series to Baylor in Waco until this year when Tech opened conference play defeating No. 14 Baylor 2-of-3 in Waco. Only twice before this season in the Big 12 era had Tech knocked off Baylor in a three-game series at Baylor Ballpark, 2001 and in the first season of the Big 12 in 1997.

STEPHEN HAGEN NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEKStephen Hagen became the first Red Raider this season to be named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Monday, March 21. Hagen was rewarded after batting .500 (9-for-18) with three multi-hit games, including a 5-for-6 effort with two doubles and a home run against No. 14 Baylor. Hagen also went 2-for-5 with a double and RBI in the final game of the Baylor series. Hagen started the week going 2-for-3 with a two-run homer against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Dan Law Field.

ANDRE WHEELER NAMED BIG 12 NEWCOMER OF THE WEEKAndre Wheeler joined Kelby Tomlinson as Tech players who had been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week this season. Wheeler, a freshman from Austin, batted .600 (6-for-10) in three games against No. 14 Baylor in Waco (March 18-20). Wheeler’s top performance came on the series finale when he went 3-for-6 with three RBI. His single to left field in the ninth tied the game and he added insurance runs for Tech in its 10-6 win in 10 innings with a two-run single in the 10th.

NOW THAT’S A TEAM EFFORTTexas Tech used a total of 21 players in its 10-6 victory in 10 innings over Baylor on Sunday, March 20. It was the most players used by Tech in a game this season as every position player on the weekend roster entered the game and all but three pitchers who ere available to pitch made appearances.

HOLUB’S ACROBATIC PLAY RANKS NO. 1 ON ESPN SPORTCENTER’S TOP 10 PLAYSRight-handed reliever Hayden Holub’s wild pitch against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday, March 15, in the fifth inning almost led to a run, but instead landed Holub on ESPN SportCenter’s Top 10 plays as the No. 1 highlight of the day. The wild pitch sent catcher Kevin Whitehead to the backstop, who then threw to a sliding Holub who caught the ball on his left-hand side and acrobatically tagged the runner out behind his back at home plate. The play was then up for the “Best of the Best” plays on ESPN’s website where Holub’s play received 6,627 total votes. His play didn’t win in the voting as Wayne Rooney of Manchester United (soccer) received 10,813 votes for his spectacular bicycle kick.



A NOBLE DEBUTTexas Tech freshman Duke von Schamann made his first appearance on the mound in fashion as he became the first Texas Tech freshman to win a collegiate debut as a starter since Chad Bettis defeated Army (16-2) on February 24, 2008. von Schamann, who made a predetermined start, tossed three shutout innings without allowing a walk while scat-tering three hits with one strikeout and throwing just 38 pitches.

FIRST COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN WHEN TRAILING AFTER EIGHT INNINGS SINCE...Texas Tech trailed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 5-4 after eight innings on Saturday, March 13, before scoring two runs in the ninth inning to mark Tech’s first come-from-behind win when trailing after eight innings since April 11, 2010. On that day, Tech trailed 3-2 at Oklahoma State before Scott LeJeune hit a two-out, three-run homer in the top of the ninth to help give Tech a 5-3 win in Stillwater.

MAKE THAT TWO COME-FROM-BEHIND WINS WHEN TRAILING AFTER 8 INNINGSTexas Tech did it again in the series finale against No. 14 Baylor in Waco as the Red Raid-ers trailed 6-3 after six, 6-4 after seven and 6-5 after eight innings. Tech then plated the tying run in the ninth on Andre Wheeler’s single to left field and then scored four runs in the 10th to secure the win.

TEXAS TECH TO PLAY ON ESPNU & FSN THIS SEASONTexas Tech will have two of its games televised to a national audience as ESPNU has picked up the Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma game on Saturday, April 2, in Norman, Okla., with a 7 p.m. first-pitch. Texas Tech will play in the first Big 12 Game of the Week when travel-ing to Manhattan against Kansas State on Saturday, April 23, at Tointon Family Stadium with a 1 p.m. first pitch against the Wildcats. Tech’s game against the Sooners is the first for the Red Raiders on the ESPN Family of Networks since 2005, when ESPNU carried all three games of the Tech/OU series in Norman.

18-GAME HOMESTAND TO OPEN THE SEASON IS A SCHOOL RECORDTexas Tech opened the season playing 18 consecutive home games - which is the longest homestand to open a season in school history. Tech finished 12-6 on the homestand. It matches the longest homestand in school history, which was first done in 1988 (Feb. 19-March 16), as the 1988 squad went 16-2 with a 15-game win streak to open the stand. On the other side, Tech has had some notable road swings to begin a campaign which includes playing 16 in a row to open the 1972 season (9-7) and playing 25 of its first 28 games on the road to begin the 1976 season (14-11).

MOST FANS AT DAN LAW FIELD SINCE 2006The first game of Tech’s series with No. 8 TCU saw 4,173 fans enter the gates at Dan Law Field. It marked the most fans at Dan Law Field since March 18, 2006, when 4,244 fans watched Texas Tech defeat No. 16 Texas, 2-1.

SHOWING THE SUPPORTTexas Tech fans packed Dan Law Field when No. 8 TCU played in Lubbock (Mar. 4-6) with at least 3,000 fans at each game during the three-game series. Total, 10,351 fans entered the gates, averaging 3,450 fans per game. It was only the second time during the last four years with at least 3,000 fans at each game in a three-game home series. The last time it happened was in 2010 when 11,584 fans attended the series with No. 8 Texas with an average of 3,861 fans attending per game.

BARNES’ HIT STREAK SNAPPED AT 15 GAMESSophomore Barrett Barnes saw his career-high 15-game hit streak snapped after an 0-for-4 against No. 8 TCU on Friday night. Barnes finished the 2010 season with a five game streak and hit safely in the first 10 games this season. During his streak Barnes batted .340 (18-for-53) with 15 runs, five doubles, four home runs, 11 RBI and 13 walks. It is the longest hit streak for a Red Raider since Scott LeJeune recorded a 17-game hit streak in 2010.

JAMODRICK McGRUDER NAMED BROOKS WALLACEMEMORIAL CLASSIC MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER Texas Tech sophomore Jamodrick McGruder earned most outstanding player recogni-tion at the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic after leading the way for Texas Tech to a 3-1 record while batting .583 (7-for-12) with five runs, four extra-base hits (three 3B), two RBI, 14 total bases, a 1.167 slugging percentage, a .750 on-base percentage and with two stolen bases.

SEVEN TECH PLAYERS MAKE BROOKS WALLACE CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAMSeven Texas Tech players, including Jamodrick McGruder - the Most Outstanding Player at the classic, were named to the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic All-Tournament team following completion of the four-day classic. Bo Altobelli (catcher), Kelby Tomlinson (shortstop), Jamodrick McGruder (outfield), Barrett Barnes (outfield), Reid Redman (util-ity), Robbie Kilcrease (starting pitcher) and Daniel Coulombe (starting pitcher) all earned recognition.

GAME NOTESMcGRUDER IS ROUNDING SECOND AND HEADING FOR THIRDJamodrick McGruder is fast, and earlier this season he showed how fast while picking up three triples in the two final games of the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic. When hitting his first triple on Sunday, he became the first Tech player since Willie Rueda in 2008 to hit triples in consecutive games. Then, in his third plate appearance on Sunday, McGruder tripled again marking the first time since last season (when he accomplished it) a Tech player notched two triples in one game. McGruder hit a pair of triples at TCU on March 12 during his freshman season. McGruder is the only Texas Tech player to hit two triples twice in his career in over 10 years. In fact, he is the only Tech player since 2001 (Jason Rainey - school record three triples) to hit two triples in a game.

COULOMBE DIALS UP 9 K’S IN 2ND START - MOST BY A RED RAIDER THIS SEASONDaniel Coulombe was named to the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic All-Tournament team after striking out nine batters in just five innings of work against BYU (2/25). Cou-lombe did take the loss in his second start of the season, but it had nothing to do with his ability to miss the barrel as he struck out two in the first, two in the second, one in the third, two in the fourth and two in the fifth. In addition, seven of his nine strikeouts were swinging. His nine strikeouts are the most by a Texas Tech pitcher this season and the most by a Red Raider since Chad Bettis struck out 10 against then-No. 1 Texas at the Big 12 Championships last season in Oklahoma City.

FLORA MAKES BACK-TO-BACK STARTS FOR THE RED RAIDERSBen Flora became the first Tech pitcher to start in back-to-back games since 2007 when he made his season debut on Sunday, Feb. 20, against Northwestern and then started against BYU on Thursday, Feb. 24. Flora only threw 54 pitches against Northwestern. The last Red Raider to start in back-to-back games was A.J. Ramos, but in a different circum-stance. Ramos got the nod in the series opener against Kansas State (in Manhattan), and after throwing the first inning, the game was postponed until the following day due to heavy rain. After the completed game one of the series, Ramos took the hill to start game two on Saturday afternoon. Ramos’ back-to-back games were on March 30-31, 2007.

SCORING EARLY AND OFTENTexas Tech scored six runs in the first inning in back-to-back games against Northern Illinois, marking the first time in over 10 years to accomplish the feat. The last time Texas Tech scored at least five runs in the first inning in back-to-back games was against San Francisco on February 14-15, 2003, when the Red Raiders plated five runs in the first in-ning in back-to-back games at Dan Law Field.

TCU IS FIRST NON-CONFERENCE TOP 10 TEAM TO PLAY AT DAN LAW FIELD SINCE 2006Texas Tech hosted No. 8 TCU for a three-game series at Dan Law Field. It marked the first time a top-10 ranked non-conference opponent had traveled to Lubbock since No. 10 Arizona State. Tech defeated the Sun Devils 7-2 on Monday, April 17, 2006. TCU and Arizona State are the only top-10 non-conference opponents to play at Dan Law Field in over 10 years.

TECH SUFFERS FIRST SHUTOUT IN 87 CONSECUTIVE GAMESThe No. 8 TCU Horned Frogs handed Texas Tech a 7-0 loss in the first game of their three-game series on March 4, at Dan Law Field. It had been 87 games since Tech was shutout, happening last when No. 11 Oklahoma knocked off Tech 4-0 on April 11, 2009 in Norman. It marked only the fourth time in Dan Spencer’s three-year tenure as head coach of the Red Raiders that they had not scored in a game. It also marked the first time Tech was shutout at home since March 28, 2008, a streak of 81 consecutive home games. Tech was shutout 1-0 against No. 2 Missouri on Dan Law Field.

TEXAS TECH AGAINST THE TOP 25 AND TOP 10 AT DAN LAW FIELD (SINCE 2001)The Red Raiders boast a 35-36 record against top-25 opponents at Dan Law Field since 2001 with an 8-13 record against the top 10 at their home venue during that period of time. This season Texas Tech is 0-3 against ranked opponents and 0-3 against teams in the top 10 at Dan Law Field. In 2010, Tech went 5-4 against the top 25 at home while going 1-2 against No. 8 Texas at Dan Law Field. Texas was the only top-10 team to play at Dan Law Field in 2010.

THERE IS A FIGHT AT THE BAT RACKIn Texas Tech’s first contest against Northern Illinois (2/26), all nine starting position play-ers had at least one base hit by the fourth inning. Overall Tech posted 18 base hits in its 15-3 win over the Huskies. The Red Raiders ended the game with seven players recording a multi-hit game. The last time every starting position player for Tech had at least one base hit in a game was against Missouri (May 2, 2010) last season.

TEXAS TECH LANDS NINE ON RED RAIDER CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAMTexas Tech won the Red Raider Classic with a perfect 4-0 record, and through the compe-tition saw plenty of impressive performances. The Red Raiders placed nine of its players on the all-tournament team, including Kelby Tomlinson (SS), who was named the Most Outstanding Player and Bo Altobelli (C), Stephen Hagen (1B), Nick Popescu (2B), Reid Redman (3B), Jamodrick McGruder (UTL), Barrett Barnes (OF), Robbie Kilcrease (SP) and John Neely (RP).



TOMLINSON NAMED FIRST-EVER BIG 12 BASEBALL NEWCOMER OF THE WEEKShortstop Kelby Tomlinson was named the first-ever Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball New-comer of the Week. This is the first season that the Big 12 has awarded newcomers from the league on a week-to-week basis. Joining Tomlinson on the weekly honor roll was Oklahoma third baseman Garrett Buechele (Player of the Week) and Texas pitcher Taylor Jungmann (Pitcher of the Week). Tomlinson batted .583 (7-for-12) in the three-day classic.

TEXAS TECH ON OPENING DAYTexas Tech improved to 39-23 all-time on Opening Day after defeating Western Michigan 8-0 on Feb. 18. Tech owns a 12-1 record on Opening Day since 1999. Third-year head coach Dan Spencer has led Tech to three consecutive wins on Opening Day. Texas Tech’s only loss over the past 13 years on Opening Day came against then-No. 19 Louisiana-Lafayette, 0-4, at the Roadrunner Classic in San Antonio on Feb. 23, 2008.

OPENING DAY AT “THE LAW”Texas Tech has been nearly unbeatable when hosting Opening Day on their home turf at Dan Law Field with a 26-5 all-time record after defeating Western Michigan 8-0 on Feb. 18. The Red Raiders have won 12 straight Opening Day games at Dan Law Field, dating back to a 1-10 loss at home against TCU on February 11, 1997. In fact, since 1986, Texas Tech is 18-1 on Opening Day at Dan Law Field. This season’s opener marked the Red Raid-ers third consecutive Opening Day at home.

OPENING DAY SHUTOUTSTexas Tech shutout Western Michigan 8-0 on Opening Day, marking the Red Raiders first Opening Day shutout since 2001. It was Texas Tech’s fifth all-time shutout on Opening Day, all occurring in Lubbock.

OPENING DAY ATTENDANCE AT DAN LAW FIELD - MOST SINCE 2003The paid attendance for Opening Day between Texas Tech and Western Michigan was 2,398, which marked the largest Opening Day crowd for Texas Tech at home since Jan. 31, 2003, when Texas Tech defeated New Mexico (4-2) in front of 3,018 fans at Dan Law Field.

DAN SPENCER WINS THIRD STRAIGHT ON OPENING DAYDan Spencer became only the third head coach in Texas Tech history to win three straight Opening Day contests. He joins former Red Raider skippers Kal Segrist (1968-70) and Gary Ashby (1984-86), who also won their first three season openers. In addition, Segrist holds the all-time school record winning five consecutive Opening Day games to begin his head coaching tenure (1968-1972).

SPENCER IS FIRST TECH SKIPPER TO START 4-0 THREE STRAIGHT SEASONSDan Spencer became the first Texas Tech head coach in the history of the program to start 4-0 during his first three seasons as head coach. Spencer’s best start as a head coach came last year when Tech began the season 5-0 with wins over Jacksonville State (2), Michigan (2) and Bethune-Cookman.

SPEAKING OF TEXAS TECH STARTING 4-0The Texas Tech baseball team has started the season 4-0 for the third consecutive year. The only other time in the history of the Red Raider baseball program that Tech has started 4-0 in three consecutive years was from 1991-1993 under legendary coach Larry Hays. This season marks the 11th time in the last 25 years that the Red Raiders have started 4-0 (2011, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2002, 1999, 1996, 1993, 1992, 1991, 1986).

OPENING DAY SUCCESS FOR TECH FRESHMENTexas Tech freshman David Paiz continued the trend of Red Raider freshmen succeeding on Opening Day after he went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Last season, Barrett Barnes had a memorable collegiate debut going 3-for-4 with three runs, two homers (2-run, 3-run), six RBI and two stolen bases against Jacksonville State (2/19/10). Barnes became the first Tech freshmen to hit two homers and also have three base hits on Open-ing Day in over 10 years. It was the best performance for a Tech freshman on Opening Day since Roger Kieschnick went 2-for-4 with three runs, a grand slam and six RBI in his collegiate debut against Louisiana-Monroe on Feb. 3, 2006.

BARNES’ OPENING DAY SUCCESS CONTINUESBarrett Barnes had a memorable freshman Opening Day (3-for-4, 2 HR, 6 RBI) and he continued that trend as a sophomore belting a two-run homer in his first at-bat of the season against Western Michigan. Barnes is now 5-for-7 with four runs, three home runs and eight RBI in two career Opening Day games.

COMING OUT RUNNIN’The past three seasons, Texas Tech has hit the ground running with eye-popping stolen base numbers on Opening Day. This season was no exception with four stolen bases (Popescu 2, Tomlinson, Redman). Last season Tech grabbed five stolen bases against Jacksonville State while in 2009 the Red Raiders stole six bases against Southern Utah.

GAME NOTESTECH TOSSES FIRST TWO-HITTER SINCE 2006Three Texas Tech pitchers combined for a two-hitter on Opening Day against Western Michigan in the 8-0 shutout. Starter Daniel Coulombe (4.0 IP, 1 H, 5 SO, 2 BB) and relievers John Neely (4.0 IP, 1 H, 4 SO, 0 BB) and Brennan Stewart (1.0 IP, 0 H, 1 SO, 0 BB) combined on the effort. It was the first two-hitter for Tech since Feb. 20, 2006, when Dustin Richard-son, Jason Seefeld and Brian Cloud took a no-hitter into the ninth inning and eventually settled for a two-hitter against Eastern New Mexico in a 16-0 victory.

BARRETT BARNES PILES UP PRESEASON ACCOLADESFollowing perhaps the most productive and most decorated freshman season in Texas Tech baseball history, Barrett Barnes received preseason praises from several national publications/websites. Barnes, who led Texas Tech with a .341 batting average and 14 home runs as a freshman and posted 53 RBI, has been named to several All-Big 12 teams and recognized for his power, hitting ability and projectability as a professional down the road. COULOMBE BECOMES FIRST TECH NEWCOMERTO START ON OPENING DAY SINCE 2006Junior lefty Daniel Coulombe became the first Texas Tech newcomer to get the nod on Opening Day since 2006. Coulombe received a no-decision after pitching four-shutout innings allowing just one hit and two walks with five strikeouts. Five years ago Texas Tech defeated Louisiana-Monroe, 21-5, behind starting pitcher Josh Tomlin, who pitched his only season at Texas Tech in 2006. Tomlin’s outing was a success as he tossed 6.0 innings allowing one run (earned) on three hits with one strikeout and one walk. In addition, Tomlin made his major league debut this past year with the Cleveland Indians on July 27 against the New York Yankees.

RED RAIDERS ON THE FALL ACADEMIC HONOR ROLLThe Texas Tech baseball program produced 18 student-athletes who received academic honor roll status following the fall semester. Ten Tech players earned Dean’s List status (3.50-4.00 GPA) while three Red Raiders recorded perfect 4.0 GPAs.

NEW OPPONENTSTexas Tech will be taking on three opponents this season for the first time. Iowa, Western Michigan and Utah Valley will all face the Red Raiders for the first time in program his-tory. Last season, Tech faced four first-time opponents, including Michigan, Bethune-Cookman, Jacksonville State and Alabama A&M. The Red Raiders went 8-0 against their first-time opponents last season, with a 2-0 record against each team.

TEXAS TECH NEWCOMERSThe Red Raiders’ 2011 roster will have several new faces, 17 to be exact. And if you toss in the four players who sat out all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, that number of newcomers reaches into the 20’s. But that doesn’t mean Tech’s roster will have inexperience overall. Several of Tech’s newcomers have received high school All-America honors while shortstop Kelby Tomlinson was tabbed a JUCO All-American at Seward County last season and Andre Wheeler (OF/LHP), Daniel Coulombe (LHP) and Taylor Christian (RHP) have been selected in the MLB Draft during their baseball careers.

POPESCU IS LONE SENIOR FOR RED RAIDERSThe Red Raider roster has one very familiar theme, and infield Nick Popescu doesn’t meet the criteria. Every player besides Popescu will have remaining years of college eligibility left after this season as Popescu is the lone senior for the Red Raiders. After watching several juniors sign in the MLB Draft last season, Popescu will be the only player on the Tech roster that will be recognized on Red Raider Senior Day in May.

RED RAIDER BIRTHDAYS DURING 2011 SEASONTwo Red Raiders will celebrate their birthdays on a gameday this season. Left-handed pitcher Zach Fowler will turn 22 on Feb. 27 – the fourth game of the season when Texas Tech hosts Northern Illinois in the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic. The lone senior on the team, Nick Popescu, will celebrate his 22nd birthday on get-away day in Manhattan, Kan., as Texas Tech plays its final game of the Kansas State series on national television (FSN) on Saturday, April 23. GAME NOTES2010 SEASON HIGHLIGHTSThe 2010 Texas Tech baseball season will be remembered for many reasons, and one that had several highlights - both as a team and individually.- Barrett Barnes was named Freshman All-America by four publications - the most ever for a Red Raider freshman.- Barrett Barnes was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year.- Barrett Barnes became the first Tech freshman to lead the team in batting average (.341) and is only the second TTU freshman to lead the team in home runs (Mike Bewley, 1974).- Jamodrick McGruder became the first Tech freshman to lead the team in stolen bases (23). His SB total ranked fourth in the Big 12.- Bobby Doran was named Louisville Slugger Co-National Pitcher of the Week. Doran struck out 16 batters in 8.1 innings pitched against Missouri.- Jamodrick McGruder joined Barnes as a Freshman All-American, marking the first time in Tech history the Red & Black had a pair of Freshman All-American selections.- Chad Bettis set the Tech record for career saves (17) and he led the Big 12 in league play with 10 saves.- Scott LeJeune hit 28 doubles to lead the Big 12, rank seventh nationally and to rank tied for second all-time in Texas Tech single-season history. LeJeune also tallied a 17-game hit streak - the longest by a Red Raider since 2004 (Cameron Blair, 20 games).- Texas Tech finished in fifth place in the Big 12 (best finish since 2004).- Texas Tech won five of nine Big 12 series.- Texas Tech tied the school and Big 12 record with 12 doubles against Kansas (4/25). The Red Raiders pounded out seven doubles in the second inning alone.- Texas Tech ranked third in the nation in doubles per game (2.84) and was seventh in the country in doubles (162).- Texas Tech ranked 26th in the nation in total attendance (77,249 fans - 2,491/game).

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DRAFT SUCCESSTexas Tech, who finished the 2010 Major League Baseball season with six former players on big league rosters, had five players drafted in the 2010 MLB Draft. Chad Bettis became the fourth highest drafted Red Raider when the Colorado Rockies selected the three-year Tech lettermen in the second round (No. 76 overall). One-year Tech standout Bobby Doran was drafted in the fourth round by the Houston Astros (No. 123 overall). Bettis and Doran marked the first Red Raider pitching duo to be drafted in the top five rounds since 1994 (Ryan Nye - 2nd Round (PHI), Eric Newman - 5th Round (SD). Left-handed pitcher Jay Johnson was drafted in the 26th round by the Toronto Blue Jays, catcher Jeremy Mayo went in the 31st round to the Washington Nationals and right-handed pitcher Brett Bruening was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 42nd round. It was the fifth time since 2004 that Tech has had at least five draft picks. Overall, Texas Tech has had 100 play-ers drafted in the MLB Draft since 1969.
