We discovered that there were 6 ladies present who have supported the bingo for over 40 years. Elizabeth Owen, age 81 and Dorothy McMillan age 80, have enjoyed the bingo for 40 years, and Mary Kopacz age 82 for 44 years. We just couldn't believe that 3 of the ladies have been playing our bingo for the entire 50 years. Marie Babe, age 85, Norma Oldfield, age 93 and Terry McIntosh age 96! The ladies told us that our bingo is one of the things that keep them alert with an active mind and our bingo gives them an opportunity to socialize with their friends. One of the ladies, Norma Oldfield, showed us the journal that she kept of her bingo winnings and over the 50 years, she had won $23,815. This was an amazing record to see. The daily grind can quickly overshadow our passion projects; emails and meetings tend to displace things like writing a book or training for a marathon. How can we strike a balance and dedicate time, attention and energy to that one special project that needs our focus? Robin Sharma encourages us to use the 90-90-1 Rule.

For the next 90 days, devote the first 90 minutes of your work day to the one best opportunity in your life. Nothing else. Zero distractions. Just get that project done. Period.

Sharma urges us to not give our peak hours to meaningless work:

Just stop doing any fake work first thing in the morning. Check your email after lunch. Make your phone calls in the afternoon. Surf the Net in the evening.

A study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology concluded that on average, it takes more than two months (66 days, to be exact) before a new behaviour becomes a habit. Sharma’s rule tacks an extra month onto the 66 days, guaranteeing that the habit sticks. Give the best hours of your day to moving forward on something meaningful.

Tackle Your Passion Project With The 90-90-1 Rule

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or ALS is probably getting more attention this summer than any time since 1939 when New York Yankees superstar Lou Gehrig was diagnosed with the disease. The awareness and attention can be traced to the Ice Bucket Challenge. Hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions, of Canadians and Americans have dumped ice water on their heads and chal lenged f r iends and acquaintances to do the same

or write a cheque to the ALS Association. The challenge has certainly hit Wasaga Beach in a big way! Many dumped the water and also contributed money. As of Sunday, more than $70 million has been raised. While so many people were having fun with their Ice Bucket Challenges, it highlighted how little medical science actually knows about ALS.The disease affects cells in the brain and spinal cord and from the spinal cord to muscles throughout the body. ALS progresses to a point where motor neurons die and muscles can't be controlled. We don't know what causes ALS and it is incurable. About 20-30,000 people live with ALS in Canada and the U.S. at any one time.

Beyond the challenge – what to know about ALS

An open letter to the ALS Association and ALS Canada...... What a summer it has been for ALS! Who would have ever thought a simple challenge would go viral and, gladly, most people ignored the rules doing both the challenge and donating! As many of us are aware, the #‎alsicebucketchallenge has raise $70.2 million for the ALS Association in the United States while ALS Canada, after increasing their goal a few times, raised $6.6 million as of today. So now what to do with all of that money? After all, this is a massive monetary and awareness windfall for the cause. We ask that both charities use the money in a prudent and conservative manner, allocating to research initiatives, patient care, support and equipment. Please do not use this money to inflate salaries, expand marketing budgets or put towards other administrative costs. ALS is a rare disease. The generosity you have received over the past month will most likely also be as rare. We understand the emotional and financial toll this disease can have on a family. Put this money towards what matters. Let those diagnosed with ALS live the best life possible and use the rest to find a cure for this terrible disease. That is the challenge we all put to you. A challenge much harder than dumping a bucket of water and ice on your head but one for which we are sure you are prepared.

An Open Letter to ALS

Almost everyone enjoys eating a good hamburger and making the perfect burger requires only a few ingredients but a number of techniques for keeping it juicy and flavourful. 1. Choosing the meat is important. Ground beef with a 20% to 25% fat content is preferable. The stores usually label this medium and regular. The extra fat keeps the burger moist during cooking.2. Gently form the patties. A loosly packed patty makes for a juicy hamburger. Over working makes the patty tough. 3. Cook on high heat and only flip the burger once. 4. Choose good quality buns to put your finished products in. The Recipe1 1/2 lb of ground beef1 1/2 tsp coarse sea salt1/4 tsp freshly ground pepper4 slices of good quality cheese (cheddar, gouda, brie etc.)The MethodLight the grill. Divide your ground beef into portions the size of a tennis ball. Gently flatten each divided portion to make your patty. Sprinkle each of the patties with salt and freshly ground pepper on both sides and press your thumb into the center of each patty to create a depression. This will keep the patty from bloating during cooking. Put your burgers on the hot grill and after about 5-6 minutes you should see the juices starting to collect on top ot the burger. This is a pretty good sign that the meat is cooked through to the middle. Flip the burgers over and continue to cook for about 3-4 minutes more for medium to well done. If you notice that the burger is cooking too quickly give it a turn on the grill. This will give it a cross effect. Melt a slice of cheese on each of the burgers and serve in warm buns with your favourite toppings. I like my burgers with pickles. The following recipe is my favourite pickle recipe. It is best eaten fresh.Dill Pickles1 1/2 cups distilled white vinegar1/4 cup sugar4 teaspoons kosher salt1 teaspoon mustard seeds1 teaspoon coriander seeds3/4 teaspoon dill seeds2 cups hot water2 pounds English cucumbers, sliced 1/4 inch thick3/4 cup coarsely chopped dill3 garlic cloves, coarsely choppedIn a large, heatproof measuring cup, combine the vinegar, sugar, salt, mustard seeds, coriander seeds and dill seeds with the hot water and stir until the sugar and salt are dissolved. Let the brine cool. In a large bowl, toss the cucumbers with the dill and garlic. Pour the brine over the cucumbers and turn to coat. Place a small plate over the cucumbers to keep them submerged, then cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Refrigerate the pickles overnight, stirring once or twice. Serve cold. The dill pickles can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

The summer season is fast approaching its end and with it we usher in a new school year. As motorists, we now must keep a watchful eye for children who may be walking or cycling to or from school. These youth may not be thinking road safety so it is vital that motorists do. In “School Zones” slow down and be extra watchful for youth. School buses will be reappearing on our roadways, these motor vehicles stop frequently and appear to drive slowly, but that is generally because they are adhering to the speed limit. These actions can frustrate some drivers. However, please remember these vehicles carry our most precious cargo, our children, and it is for that reason alone, when following a school bus you should drive responsibly and not aggressively. When a school bus stops with its stop arm out and red lights flashing it is either letting off or on students. Being impatient and passing a stopped school is not only against the law but is reckless and dangerous. It's an offence to pass a stopped school bus and it could cost you $500.00 and 6 demerit points. Parents and Guardians, please remind your students of the rules of the road and how to be safe while walking or cycling to and from school. If you walk to school, walk facing traffic. If you bike to school, bike with traffic and wear your helmet. Whether you walk or bike wear clothing that makes you more visible to traffic. Refrain from walking and texting, when you focus on texting your ability to perceive or avoid a dangerous situation is compromised. If you listen to music while on your way to school keep the music low or leave one ear bud out so you can hear danger if it approaches. If your child is new to school or going to a new school plan a route for them to school or the school bus stop and walk it with them so they know the route. If your child rides a school bus remind them to stay seated in the bus when it is moving and to keep their arms and heads inside and not out a window. Also so remind them to never throw anything out the school bus windows.Ensure that you review with your child the school's code of conduct and how to handle issues at schools. The only time you will witness this phenomenon in your life!

This year, the month of August 2014 will count 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays. This phenomenon occurs only once in every 823 years. Chinese people call it “Pocket Full of Money!” So..tell this to all your friends and in 4 days you will have a pleasant monetary surprise..Based on Chinese Feng Shui, who does not tell someone

about this could find himself without a clue of what’s going on in his life..and that is no laughing matter.

The last time this happened was in the year 1191and the next time will be in the year 2837!

On September 14th join the Wasaga Beach Terry Fox Run along with the rest of the world where you can run or walk one kilometre, 5K or 10 K route at the main Beach Area 1 and 2. “This is a non-competitive community event about getting together with families and friends in recognizing what Terry Fox stood for”, said Wasaga Beach Terry Fox Run Organizer, David Foster. Foster has been a participant for most of the 33 years in different communities. Since 2009, Foster and Mike McCluskey have been organizing this yearly run in the Beach and both Foster and McCluskey agree it is the prettiest run in Ontario. To date, over $650 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name. All proceeds go to the Terry Fox Foundation to fund cancer research. According to Foster, Wasaga Beach raised $16,691.10 last year and $6,900 was raised from school participations bringing the total to $23,594. “This is huge for Wasaga Beach – a lot money was raised over the years since we started in 2009. We have an amazing team and I'm very proud. This year's goal is to increase that amount to $20,000 representing almost $1.00 per person and if the schools are on board the total could reach $27,000 to $28,000 – that would be tremendous”, added Foster.Terry Fox an active teenager involved in many sports was only 18-years-old when he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) and forced to have his right leg amputated 15 centimetres (six inches) above the knee in 1977. Overcome by the suffering of other cancer patients while he was in the hospital, Terry decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.Terry started his run in St John's Newfoundland on April 12, 1980. He ran 42 kilometres (26 miles) a day through Canada's Atlantic Provinces, Quebec and Ontario. However, on September 1st, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles), Terry was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay because cancer had appeared in his lungs. An entire nation was stunned and saddened. Terry passed away on June 28, 1981 at the age of 22.The Wasaga Beach Terry Fox Run legacy begins at 9:00 a.m. at the Festival Square at the Main Beach Area 1. Registration starts at 8:00 a.m. or online at www.terryfoxrun.org. “Last year approximately 150 registered with a team of 25 volunteers,” said Foster. The route will be accessible to wheelchairs and strollers, but bicycles are not permitted.T-shirts are selling for $20 online with a limited supply at Scotia Bank in Wasaga Beach where David Foster works. Foster plans to display a piece of history with his 19 shirts he collected from previous runs at Scotia Bank the last week leading to the event. However they are not for sale. The heroic Canadian is gone, but his legacy lives on. For more information on donation or to participate please visit: www.terryfoxrun.org.

Wasaga Beach Air Cadets About to Start Up for the 2014-2015 Season at the RecPlex

They are hoping to recruit many more cadets to join the exciting program for the upcoming year. One way they can do this is by exposing the community to the special summer camps that some of our cadets attended this summer. Their stories will be newsworthy and it would help the cause. We’ll be telling more about this in future issues of Beach BOOSTER and on BeachBOOSTERradio.com For more information... On August 14, 1963, the Wasaga Beach Lions Club launched bingo in town with a “Monster Bingo” This gave the club their first funding to help the community (not a town until 11 years later). Their first donation was $300 to the Blue Mountain Camp for Crippled Children. That year they supplied a Christmas turkey and hamper to every needy family in the area. Being the fact that one of the major missions in Lions is to improve sight, corrective glasses were provided for several children. In 1966, they purchased the first ambulance in town for the cost of $2,863.40! In 1967, they started the Small Fry club for pre-school children and this continuted until the province started kindergarden. They made their first of many contributions to the Wasaga Beach Library by providing childrens books. In 1970, the first donation was made to General and Marine Hospital. To date, they have donated over $150,000. 1971 was the building of the towns' first medical centre which is used as a youth centre today. 1976 was the year which the Lions club purchased the Wasaga Stars Arena for citizens of the town. In 1993, over $70,000 was put toward the Wasaga Beach Library. Over the 50 years, the club with the support of all of the bingo players, have been able to support youth – hockey, figure skating, baseball, soccer, youth centre and a robotics team. We support people in need with support to the food bank (loonie draw), Hospice Simcoe, Hospice Georgian Triangle, habitat for humanity and kinettes toy drive. We know that local branches of national organizations need support so they can support our local residents. This includes CNIB, MS society, Alzheimers Society, Cancer society and several others. The list goes on and on.On August 15th, Wasaga Beach Lions celebrated 50 years of bingo with their 187 bingo players. What an amazing night. All the players were treated to a bite size cupcake which was donated by Taste of Paradise of Wasaga Beach. Everyone who has played our bingo is part of our Club's history and everything that we have done to help the community. The reality is that none of the organizations and individuals that have been supported would have happened without the continued support of our bingo players. In the 50 years, there has been amost $2,000,000 put back into the community. So, for those nights that you didn't win, many others did. A special recognition also goes out to one Lions– Wayne Henderson. Wayne has been at almost every bingo for the last 30 years. When players line up to buy their cards from Wayne, many times he knows what they purchase before they even say anything! Thank you Wayne for ALL these Friday nights! We are proud to say that younger people in their 20's and 30's have discovered that bingo is great entertainment in Wasaga Beach on a Friday night. So get a group of friends and co-workers together and be part of our next 50 years of history. Thank you on behalf of everyone and every organization that the Wasaga Beach Lions Club bingo has supported. Playing bingo is a Win-Win.

Be sure to include time of meal, food amount/portion size, and degree of hunger. Be as honest and thorough as you can. It’s easy to forget the handful of M&M’s at the office or that alfredo sauce on your lunchtime pasta. Review your journal weekly, either on your own or with a dietitian to determine eating patterns that are positive and those that need a change to help you move towards a healthier lifestyle.Question: Can you please explain what Tabata is? I know it’s a form of intense exercise, but what exactly do you do?Answer: Tabata training is a specific type of high intensity interval training that is short in duration but extremely HIGH in intensity. Japanese scientist Dr. Izumi Tabata and his team of researchers in Tokyo discovered Tabata Training. Tabata’s research was done on two groups of athletes: one group training at moderate intensity (5 days a week for 6 weeks for one hour at a time) and the other at a much higher intensity (4 days a week for 6 weeks but for only 4 minutes at a time). The high intensity group showed a substantially larger increase in their aerobic system than group one, and increased their anaerobic system by 28 percent. In other words they literally got fitter faster! You can see how this is becoming a popular method of training. The Tabata protocol is only 4 minutes of exercise but within those 4 minutes, you perform 20 seconds of extremely high intensity exercise

Question: I hear that keeping a food journal might help me followed by 10 seconds of recovery and repeat 8 times in a lose weight. Can you give me some tips on how to get row. In order to get the results Tabata saw in his study, you started and the best way to journal? need to workout as hard as you possibly can for each and Answer: Several studies have shown that people who every second of the intervals (to a place where you literally keep food journals are more likely to be successful in losing cannot say a word and do not feel like doing the work weight. The simple act of food journaling is an excellent way again). You can choose any exercise that allows you to to bring instant awareness to what, how much, and why you achieve the intensity described. Tabata workouts are are eating. Journaling helps identify areas where changes intense, but great if you are short on time, need to break might need to be made, whether it’s recognizing a food through a plateau, or you are just looking to change up your allergy or sensitivity, or realizing that many of your daily exercise routine.
