What is the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank? The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is a nonprofit organization that has been dedicated to fighting hunger, improving lives, and strengthening communities for more than 30 years. The Food Bank started as a one-day demonstration on World Food Day in 1981, and to address the needs of hungry families, began permanent operation on October 16, 1982. Now serving 27 counties, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is the largest nonprofit food distribution organization in central Pennsylvania. The Food Bank solicits, inventories and distributes food and other donated products to more than 800 partner agencies (food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, etc.) that directly serve people struggling with hunger. Last year, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank distributed more than 32 million pounds of food, the equivalent of 27 million meals, to individuals and families in need in central Pennsylvania.

Dear Student:Thank you for your interest in the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s Junior Advisory Council. In partnership with GIANT Food Stores, we are offering central PA students the opportunity to make a difference in their community and be awarded a scholarship for post-secondary education.

The mission of the Junior Advisory Council is to provide a forum and sponsorship for a diverse group of high school students to come together to learn, engage and create the next generation of innovative programs impacting the fight against hunger. Our vision is that the youth of central Pennsylvania develop a lifelong passion for the eradication of hunger through education, social interaction and empowerment.

The Junior Advisory Council term is assigned for one academic year (September - May). The Council will be expected to meet a minimum of once per month, with attendance required. Meeting dates and times will be determined at a later date. Central Pennsylvania Food Bank staff and board members will supervise the council. The Council will be expected to plan and execute one hunger-related project during its term.

Submission of your essay will enter you into competition for the top prize - a $1,000 scholarship. All contest finalists that are selected and join the Junior Advisory Council will be awarded a $500 scholarship. When submitting your essay, please remember that an excellent essay uses well-researched ideas and facts to hold together logical and compelling arguments and presents thoughtful solutions to the problem. It also reflects a student’s ability to organize complex facts and ideas, to bring in his/her own interesting perspectives and ideas to the analysis and recommendation(s), and to pay attention to writing style and mechanics (grammar, syntax, and punctuation). All essays will be judged by members of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank Board of Directors. The judges’ decisions are final.

Thank you for your interest in the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s Junior Advisory Council!

Sincerely,

Joe ArthurExecutive DirectorCentral Pennsylvania Food Bank

I wanted to be a part of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank Junior Advisory Council so I could partner with like-minded young leaders to impact hunger in our region. As much as I can do as one person, I know there is so much more we can accomplish when we work together. I am interested in public health and communications and hope to work in a

professional capacity to improve the lives of those in need. Having this real world experience working with the staff

and volunteers at the Food Bank is invaluable.
