Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,

The Roman amphitheater in Pula. The Gothic treasures of Trogir. The glittering mosaics of Ravenna. Thanks to the work of conservationists and preservationists, these cultural marvels continue to delight us centuries after their creation. Please join me next summer to discover them, and more, on an art-filled voyage along the Adriatic coast.

We board Sea Cloud in Dubrovnik and sail up the Dalmatian coast to the island of Hvar, home to one of the oldest towns in Europe. In Split, we will wander the vast ruins of Diocletian’s Palace, where 3,000 people once lived, before visiting UNESCO-listed Trogir, to learn how local conservationists saved its medieval monuments from the ravages of time.

We will experience the remarkable amphitheater in Pula, then cross to Italy, my native country, for an inland visit to Urbino. I look forward to our tour of the Palazzo Ducale and its paintings by Paolo Uccello, who in his pioneering use of perspective applied science to art—not unlike what my colleagues and I endeavor to do in our work for The Met. We will continue to Ravenna, where we’ll bring to bear my expertise in chemistry and mineralogy to enhance our enjoyment of the city’s celebrated mosaics. We disembark in Venice, or you may stay for the optional postlude. There is also an optional prelude offered in Dubrovnik.

Sea Cloud is a destination unto herself. Watch as her energetic crew scales the masts to set the sails by hand, and relax in the congenial company of alumni of Harvard and Yale Universities.

My lectures will complement the historical knowledge of Robert Darnton, the Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor, Emeritus, and University Librarian, Emeritus at Harvard University; and musical lectures by Boris Berman, Professor in the Practice of Piano at Yale University.

I hope you will join me to experience this unique intersection of science and art.

Sincerely,Marco LeonaDavid H. Koch Scientist in Charge, Department of Conservation and Scientific ResearchThe Metropolitan Museum of Art

With her rich mahogany and gleaming brass, the legendary Sea Cloud travels under 30 billowing sails trimmed by hand. Her original owners, heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and financier E. F. Hutton, desired a craft like no other. They spared no expense to create the largest private sailing ship ever built and in 1931, Sea Cloud was launched. In the ’30s and ’40s, as she sailed the world, the four-masted beauty was host to leaders including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Sweden’s King Gustavus V. Now carefully restored by a team of master craftspeople, this great lady continues to offer elegant quarters, fine dining, and impeccable service. Praised by the world’s most discerning travelers, Sea Cloud receives consistently high rankings from Condé Nast Traveler. Please note: Sea Cloud does not have an elevator.
