BBC Television is funded by just over a third of the licence fee, in return, our audiences receive a multimedia powerhouse which is unique globally. That funds some 15,200 hours of original drama, comedy, entertainment and factual programming each year. Last year, 99.6% of the UK watched at least 15 min of BBC TV. BBC One alone reached 75.4% of the UK population on average each week, making it the widest reaching channel in the country. However, we know to maintain this reach is increasingly challenging as audiences are given more and more choice. It is therefore vital we ensure our programming reflects the diversity of our country on screen and in our workforce. Workforce Diversity Targets for March 2015:

• BME: 12.5% (9.1% as of 31 March 2014)

• BME wider management group: 10% (6.4% as of 31 March 2014)

• Disability: 5.5% (4.4% as of 31 March 2014)

Notable commissions for 2014/15 include:

BBC1

• Danny and The Human Zoo – a one off drama written by Lenny Henry and based on his childhood will air in 2015

• The Interceptor – this exciting new thriller airing later this year has O.T Fagbenie playing the lead

• 6 part sitcom Woody, showcasing the many talents and faces of Kayvan Novak and Citizen Khan will be returning.

BBC2

• Early 2015 will see the launch of Song of the South, a series looking at the rise of predominantly black music in the southern states of America. This will be hosted by Reginald D Hunter

• BBC2 are developing A History of Black Britain. This will be written and presented by David Olusoga and is currently being researched with BAME academics in a series of workshops.

• BBC Comedy’s 2013/2014 development pot for underserved audiences development has resulted in the UK’s first Transexual lead in a sitcom –Boy Meets Girl, 6x30 for BBC2 in 2015.

BBC3

• In September 2014 BBC3 will launch South Side Story which is a structured reality series set in Peckham.

• People Just Do Nothing is a sitcom for BBC3 airing later in 2014 that went to series after it was shown as part of our online Comedy Feeds.

• Treasures of India – this 3 part series presented by Dr Sona Datta, curator of Indian Art at the Peabody Essex Museum and a new talent to TV, will air in the spring of 2015

• The Proms – this summer BBC Proms will introduce many new presenters and experts from diverse backgrounds including Razia Iqbal, Samira Ahmed, Danielle De Niese, Rodney Earl Clark, and Wayne Marshall.
