Kingspoint Crier February 28, 2016 KINGSPOINT CLUB NEWS: We are happy to report that the Annual Meeting of the Kingspoint Club on February 25 th was a success. Thank you to all the attendees and those who submitted proxies; we easily met a quorum. Membership approved the additions of Danny Schmidt (member at large), Amy Gaunt (Secretary,) and Greg Henderson (Facilities), and re-elected Jamie Peters (Clubhouse Coordinator). These approvals make us a full board and we are very enthusiastic about the coming year! In addition, we were joined by Gemma Meadows who will provide much needed membership support. The tennis court improvement project passed! Board Member Danny Schmidt gave an extensive overview of his 9 months of research and presented the most viable plan for improving this area. The project entails removing the current surface and greening the quarter-acre area, creating additional recreational space for KP members to enjoy and improve upon for years to come. We will be working on a more formal capital fundraising campaign in the coming months and will keep you informed of developments. In the meantime, please feel free to send donations to the Kingspoint Club, P.O. Box 365, Williamsburg, VA 23187, noting the Kingspoint Tennis Court Improvementproject on your checks. Tracy Sohoni gave a recap of the 2015 budget and an outlook for 2016. We were able to exceed our savings goal by $1,000 and we enter 2016 on strong financial footing. Working with BB&T Bank, which holds our current loan, we have developed a plan to refinance the current loan ahead of the 2017 requirement to take advantage of current interest rates. The Clubs major expenditure in 2016 will be replacing the pool deck furniture. We are currently soliciting bids and hope to have it for this coming pool season! We discussed the opportunity to leverage stock membership when neighborhood homes are on the market/under contract. Please spread the word to any neighbors who currently have their home on the market or are planning to list them that stock membership should be verified and discussed as part of the negotiating process. Please speak to the applicable real estate agents for opportunities and clarification. The club hosted some new social events over the past year, including St. Patrick’s Day Party, Fridays on the Deck, Harvest Party and Friday Coffee will resume in March. We would like to thank Kim Storms for her tenure as Social Chair last year. She did a phenomenal job. The Club is actively seeking a new social chair (or two). If you are interested, please send an email to [email protected] . We were very pleased to introduce our new facilities chair, Greg Henderson, who provided an overview of upcoming projects and priorities for the entire Club property. His first order of business will be fixing the broken platform on the playset with the help of his father. Thank you Greg! This past year, we were able to complete some needed maintenance projects thanks to our wonderful volunteers, including painting the clubhouse, limbing trees along Northpoint in front of the Clubhouse, and fixing the lights that illuminate the area where the sidewalk meets Northpoint. There is plenty more work to do! Please look for details in the coming weeks for a Spring Clean Up Day. As always, immediate volunteer opportunities will be advertised in the Crier.

BB&T Bank, which holds our current loan, we have developed a plan to refinance the current loan ahead of the 2017 requirement to take advantage of current interest rates. The Club’s major expenditure in 2016 will be replacing the pool deck furniture. We are currently soliciting bids and hope to have it for this coming pool season! We discussed the opportunity to leverage stock membership when neighborhood homes are on the market/under contract. NEIGHBORHOOD DIRECTORY 2016

Corrections: p. 6 of Street Directory: Woodbine Ct., 101, Shaw…change phone # to 585-2599 I would like to personally thank Peggy and Harvey Manning for updating, publishing and delivering the Kingspoint Directory! It is a labor of dedication to our neighborhood. Please remember, the directory can only be accurate with your assistance to detail. If you are not listed, or are not listed correctly; please send corrections to Peggy Manning ([email protected]). Please also let Peggy know of changes to nearby homes, especially when a neighbor has moved out. We plan to include neighborhood maps, once again, in the 2016 directory. Watch for your new neighborhood directory from the Kingspoint Neighborhood Association in early February.

THE KINGSPOINT NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION NEWS

Your 2016 Kingspoint Neighborhood Directory has been delivered. We hope you will find it accurate and helpful. If you catch an error, please let us know right away. We appreciate the tremendous efforts of Peggy and Harvey Manning in updating and publishing our directory for the last 20 years.

Page 4: BB&T Bank, which holds our current loan, we Kingspoint Crier...2016 on strong financial footing. Working with BB&T Bank, which holds our current loan, we have developed a plan to refinance

We also thank our Neighborhood Association Board members and Neighborhood Watch zone leaders who assisted with revisions. We have welcomed more than a dozen new families to Kingspoint over the past year. We have also lost a large number of neighbors; both those who have passed away in recent months and those who have moved on. Please let us know when there are changes near you and properties change hands. We want to welcome all new neighbors and bring them a Directory.

Our strength as a community comes from the strong relationships neighbors build with one another. We hope that each of our new families feels welcomed to Kingspoint, and will soon count many of us as friends.

The 2016 Directory includes neighborhood maps and a clear plastic cover for the first time in many years. We ask neighbors to keep and re-use the covers and maps in years to come.

A medical professional in the community asked that we remind everyone to eliminate standing water, where mosquitoes breed, from around our homes. We simply cannot allow water to collect in containers, outdoor furniture, vehicles, refuse, or anywhere else mosquitoes may breed. Please check your property and empty or eliminate containers where rain can collect. Those of us with rain barrels and water gardens are already aware of Mosquito Dunks, which kill larvae without harming fish or other wildlife who might drink the water.

You are most likely aware of the new Zika virus, which has been brought back to the United States by travelers this winter. We've already had mosquito borne Encephalitis, West Nile Virus, and other diseases in our area for the last several years, which can have a devastating impact on young children, pregnant women, and the elderly. Prevention is important if we want to do our part to keep the Zika virus away from Kingspoint. Our vigilance in eliminating or treating standing

water is crucial to protect ourselves and our neighbors in the months ahead.

Many pioneer residents, who built the first homes, still live in Kingspoint. Family roots run deep, as young people who grew up here remain actively engaged in the life of our community. We never want visitors to have a false impression of a community in decline. It is important to keep our neighborhood as beautiful and well maintained as it was in its early years.

Spring offers a fresh opportunity for all of us to spruce up our properties. Master Gardeners are available to consult with us about our yards. Nine Kingspoint homes are currently on the market; Realtors and buyers visit frequently. Let's work together to make sure visitors and potential neighbors see not only the natural beauty of our community, but also the pride we share in our homes and neighborhood.

Spring brings more of us out to walk. Those of us walking need to move aside for traffic, and to keep our dogs out of the way of oncoming cars. We ask all drivers to observe our 25 mph speed limit and to watch out for children, pets, and walkers. A little consideration keeps our streets safer for everyone.

Steve Houff and Benson Dexter will complete our new plantings at the entrance in the weeks ahead, as they replace a few of the Junipers. This is the last stage of our 2015 project, funded in part by a grant from the county. You may have noticed the new Daffodils beginning to emerge. Many thanks to the volunteers who planted the bulbs last fall, to Steve and Benson for planting our new Crepe Myrtle trees and Junipers, and to all those who help with our neighborhood entrance. We hope everyone enjoys the beauty here each day.

We appreciate the ongoing efforts of all neighbors which keep our community looking neat and well maintained.

Clubhouse Entrance Patio Bricks The past few years we have

welcomed many new families to the Kingspoint community. These families may not have thought about or known how to order a brick for the Clubhouse entrance. When we built the Clubhouse we conducted a “Fundraiser” that generated money to furnish the clubhouse. At that time we offered bricks with personal messages, and benches, trees, etc. and raised over $20,000! This time we are ordering only bricks. Personal messages have honored families, children, grandchildren, neighbors, former residents, individuals, who have passed on, and pets. For many of us it has served as a way to remember all the wonderful neighbors who make Kingspoint what it is. This is also a way to show your pride in your swimmers! Ordering a brick is very simple and easy. We charge $100.00 for a “STANDARD” brick (4”x8”) which allows 15 characters per line

(including spaces) and 4 lines of text. (Call me if you want a larger brick, 8”x 8”.)

1. Check out bricks in the patio to get an idea for your brick.

2. Give me a call and I will help you with the wording. (The website where I order has a “brick creator” where I can make a digital brick and email it to you.) This is a very simple process that allows you to see what you are getting.

3. Send a check made out to me, Robert Hanny, for $100.00. I will order your brick, pay for it and when your brick arrives I will cash your check and send the balance, usually $60.00 to the club, (less my expense which includes the brick and shipping). A standard brick usually costs $40.00 depending on how many bricks are in an order.

4. Bricks are usually shipped and received in 3-4 weeks. Weather permitting, I then install the brick.

KINGSPOINT GARDEN CLUB They say when it rains it pours. My father is very ill and will pass soon, so I visit him every day now. My laptop recently broke so I had to get a new one and set it up in order to do articles for the Crier, and other things. I have discovered, even in Winter, that a garden can be a place of solace. Each year the Kingspoint Garden Club attempts to partially sponsor a child to Nature Camp. The student must be between 6th and 12th grade (completed 5th grade). If you have, or know of a child, that is interested please let us know.

For more information, you can view their website at www.naturecamp.net. As we have had a rather cold winter, in spells, I thought I would write about dealing with winter plant damage. One way to cope with this is to select plants that are suitable for our climate. Water the plant less in winter. Protect them from wind as it is usually what hurts them. When you look at your plants at the end of winter don’t be too quick in tossing them if they appear dead. Nature may still be working on them so look for those green shoots. I generally allow the leaves that fall to protect the plants until Spring starts to become obvious. Then I carefully remove the leaves. I have already done this for our daffodils which are pretty hearty. If the dried foliage has lost all the seeds then I might trim them; otherwise, I leave the seeds for the birds and textural interest.

We had a wonderful program this month on hummingbirds. If you weren’t able to come you missed a really nice talk and program. Next

month the club is having their Designs for Dining at Emily McDowell’s home. This is a chance for members to get together. In April we will be visiting the Norfolk Botanical Garden. If this sounds interesting, keep us in mind. Yours in gardening, Mary Grogan [email protected] 757-258-5861 KINGSPOINT WOMEN’S CLUB The Kingpsoint Women's Club met on Tuesday, February 16th at the Kingpsoint Clubhouse to hear an informative talk about the water resources of James City County from Larry Foster, longtime head of the James City County Service Authority. We all came away with a better understanding of the water sources for James City County and their limitations. Larry graciously answered lots of pertinent questions asked by our members. The members voted to make their annual donation of $400 to the Kingspoint Club for the use of the clubhouse for meetings. I would like to thank hostesses Penny Kidd, Linda Berryman and Judy Schroeder for the delicious food and beautiful flowers (pictured below).

Next month on Tuesday, March 15th, we are having a special tour of Bacon's Castle in Surry County. Built in 1665, it is the oldest brick

dwelling in the United States. Bacon's Castle is restored and operated by Preservation Virginia. We plan to meet at the Clubhouse at 10:00 to carpool to Surry. We want to catch the 10:30 ferry to arrive for a tour at about 11:00 AM. There will be a charge of $5 per person for the tour. Those who are so inclined are planning to stop at the Carrot Tree on the return trip for lunch. More information to follow.
