    We are operating in challenging times;

    electricity demand is rising which,

added to the growth in renewable

    energy sources, will necessitate major

    upgrades and reurbishments to existing

    networks. Championed by industry

    regulators, including Ogem, consumers

    are demanding signicant cost savings

and a more responsible and sustainable

    approach to energy generation and

transmission. As a result, investment in

the grid inrastructure, in diverse global

    markets, is reaching unprecedented levels.

Innovation is changing the way in which

electricity is generated and where it is

created. Smart grids that anticipate uturechanges and provide network operators

    with increased fexibility will dene

    investment strategies.

    The construction and maintenance o

    overhead transmission lines is benetting

    rom Balour Beattys excellence in

    engineering innovation to radically

improve saety, reduce time spent on site

    and minimise liecycle operating costs.

Our role, as one o the worlds leaders

    in overhead line transmission design,

    construction and maintenance, is to

help our clients make the right decisions

and deliver their investment plans to the

    highest standard. We provide access

to the specialist skills and resources

that clients need on a global basis. This

    includes an extensive captured supply

    chain o specialist manuacturers geared

to the needs o local markets, and includes

    in-house abrication o transmission line

    towers.

We are one o only a ew specialist

providers with the ability to operate

across the spectrum rom 132kV to 765kV,

providing a portolio o services that

    includes a comprehensive design service

to assess easibility and scope the detailed

    requirements o a contract in advance o

construction. In addition, we oer a proven

reurbishment capability to extend the lieo existing network inrastructure.

Our ocus is ully aligned with our clients

concerns in the areas o saety, customer

    service, eciency, cost reduction,

    innovation and sustainability.

We are building upon a proud heritage

    o innovative engineering excellence

to leave behind a lasting legacy o sae,

    sustainable, high quality engineered

solutions that provide value or money or

    our clients and their customers.

A portolio o end-to-endservices that deliver innovativesolutions to global challenges.

Programme ManagementBalour Beatty Utility Solutions can add

value to clients strategic and regulatory

    outputs, delivering maximum return on

    resources and investment. We achieve

this by providing high level programme

    management expertise to manage budgets

eectively, sequencing work to meet both

    cash and regulatory requirements and

delivering projects on time. With access

to specialist delivery teams rom across

the Balour Beatty Group, we can deliver

    complete inrastructure solutions.

We provide a single interace between

    the client, stakeholders and service

    providers, keeping lines o communication

    streamlined and removing duplication.

    Scoping

Increasingly we are asked by clients to

    help them scope uture requirements

looking at the whole liecycle o a potential

    project. By ully understanding their

current issues and challenges and being

aware o new opportunities and desired

outcomes, we are able to explore possible

    scenarios, assess potential risks and

consider uture proong assets to cater orexpansion. Scoping is either undertaken

as part o an ongoing inormal dialogue or

    as a dened process.

    Feasibility & Planning

We carry out easibility studies in response

to the basic specifcation presented, looking

at key drivers such as saety, environmental

    impact, aordability and sustainability

    to determine the basic engineering

requirements o the proposed works. We

ensure the buildability o the design and

delivery o the programme through the early

    input o our operational expertise.

    Design

Throughout the design process we consider

the whole lie saety and environmental

impact o any solution during construction,

    maintenance, reurbishment and

deconstruction. To deliver a solution that

meets requirements we take the high

    level easibility design platorm, detailed

engineering specifcations and make thebest use o standard and non- standard

design elements. We also examine the

opportunities or o-site assembly to reduce

time taken on site and reduce risk urther.

    Engineering & Procurement

With our extensive knowledge o the

    marketplace, we can procure, manage

    and inspect specialist equipment, services

and plant to ensure the works are

    completed eciently and eectively. Pre-

    abrication and assembly options reduce

risk and programme duration. We work

    collaboratively with the extended supply

chain to ensure that technical, process

    and cultural innovation delivers tangible

    results across the whole contract.

    Pre-Construction

    The pre-construction phase involves

    proactive management o the clients

    requirements, ocusing on upront

    communication and building relationships.

    Project constraints are addressed early

    including: local wildlie, archaeology,

    weather and altitude planning, access,

    wayleaves and local sporting rights.

ConstructionDuring construction our ocus is on

    operating saely, minimising disruption to

    local communities, maximising productivity

    and maintaining the programme schedule.

We have ull in-house capabilities or

all core activities, beneftting rom our

training schools in Derby, Newton and

    the Philippines. Ongoing communication

with local landowners, clear ownership o

issues and proactive site appraisals ensure

    standards are met and expectations

are realised. An integrated testing and

    commissioning programme is conducted

beore fnal handover to the client.

    Reurbishment & Upgrade

    Towers, conductors, insulators and ttings

will need to be periodically reurbished

during the lie o the network. Towers and

oundations can be upgraded to cater

or changes in legislation and codes o

practice. Any outages are scheduled to

minimise disruption using live line parallelworking techniques.

    Maintenance & Repair

    We provide maintenance services to

maximise the lie o assets within the

clients investment strategy. We avoid the

disruption and cost o unplanned work

    through programmes o regular inspection

    and pro-active maintenance. In addition,

we provide a comprehensive out o hours

    response and emergency cover capability

to address damage resulting rom storms,

    re and vehicle collisions.
