President’s Message

Barbara Puchala, President

It is sad to be saying farewell to The Bulletin. This is the last issue of The Bulletin.

IIn the previous issue, I outlined the reasons for this decision. It was a long time under discussion and no other solution could be found. We could no longer continue as we have and with the position of Bulletin Editor coming up for election at the March 2016 Annual General Meeting, it was time to make a decision.

We are looking forward to being able to be in touch with our membership more frequently and through various media. We will be making more use of posts on our website, our Facebook page, Twitter and our Bulletin Express.

The benefits are faster distribution of relevant news and information, and more interaction among the garden clubs and community gardens.

We presented a notice of motion at the October Fall meeting which has been posted on the website as well as described in the Bulletin Express. If the motion is passed, we will have a new position, Communications Co-ordinator (replacing Bulletin Editor), whose job will be to ensure that the information and news from

the Council is sent out through all our communications channels. And this means we will need some volunteers for the various channels.

And speaking of volunteers — I would like to extend a big thankyou to those who have been helping out over the last few years. Please refer to our Thank You page in this issue. We owe these volunteers a great deal of gratitude and there really aren’t words enough to convey how much we appreciate their efforts.

As mentioned, we have our AGM on March 12th at the Firefighters’ Banquet and Conference Centre. Please go to our website at BCGardenClubs.com for full information and registration forms. There is also a link on our Facebook page, ( https://www.facebook.com/bcgardenclubs/). You are also able to register online using Eventbrite.

I’m looking forward to seeing every-one there. Our meetings are highly entertaining as well as informative. It is a great chance to catch up with other clubs and other gardeners — and have a great lunch as well!

See you there!

Secretary’s Report

Margaret Spratt, Secretary

Hello: One of my duties is to cover the Event Committee. Last year we had a successful event with VanDusen Gardens. This March we are going to the Master Gardeners to advertise what we do, whom we represent, etc.

We would also like to participate in your event when you have one or know of one that is going to happen. Please let me know if and when we can participate.

1st Vice President’s Report

Cindy Tataryn, 1st Vice President

The speakers for this years’ AGM meeting will be Dr. Rob Higgins speaking on Fire Ants and David Tracey speaking on Edible Landscaping. I hope you will come for another informative day and an excellent buffet lunch, along with the vendor tables.

The Horticulture Judges Committee has been hard at work and the revised Horticulture Judges Manual will be ready soon. It is over 340 pages of information on judging and exhibiting flowers, fruits, vegetables, floral design; as well as information on organizing a monthly show bench or a larger annual show for you and your garden club members and the public to enjoy. If you would like to order a copy for yourself or your club please contact me at [email protected] or the address below with your name, address, phone number and email address to be put on the list. The price has not been finalized yet and will depend on how many copies are printed; the last estimate was around $15.00 plus shipping.

If you are interested in becoming a Horticulture Judge or a Floral Design Judge, please contact me. If there is enough interest we can organize Judges Courses in the near future. The price of the courses will depend on the cost of renting

a facility to hold the classes and the number of people taking the courses. The Horticulture Judges course will be approximately 15 (7 hour) days spread over several months to take advantage of the growing seasons for different plants. The length of the Floral Design Judges course is yet to be determined (approx. 10 -12 days) but will have prerequisites such as knowledge of how to make Traditional Floral Designs. (e.g. Triangle, Asymmetrical Triangle, Crescent, Inverted Crescent, Horizontal, Vertical, etc.), also knowledge of types of material and their uses, conditioning, mechanics, elements and principles.

For more information or to be put on a list please e-mail me at [email protected]

Thank You to our Volunteers

We’re always looking for volunteers to help us out. The Council is a not-for-profit group and it relies on volunteers. The Executive Board is made up of volunteers who have stood for election to the various board positons. We are also fortunate to have other volunteers who have offered their time and efforts to assist with a wide range of Council activities.

The Council Executive would like to acknowledge the efforts of those volunteers without whose assistance much of what we do would not be possible. It extends a big THANKYOU.

The following individuals have earned our gratitude over the past few years.

Draw Table: What would the Council Meetings be without our World Famous Draw Table? Meeting attendees look forward with great anticipation to this draw and it is one of the main highlights of our meetings. Audrey Barnes has been coordinating the efforts of her group of New Westminster Horticultural Society volunteers in setting up the tables, accepting and recording the donations received, distributing tickets and then running the draw for at least the last four years, if not longer. The Draw Table would not be the same without the efforts of Audrey & her team. Diane Escalante and Lea McDonald have been two volunteers who have been consistently part of this team. Other members have stepped in as well and for this we thank you as well. These efforts have not gone unnoticed or unappreciated.

The Bulletin: Audrey Barnes had also undertaken the job of getting The Bulletin printed and mailed. She has been pick-ing up The Bulletin from the printer, addressing envelopes, getting the postage and sending out The Bulletin via Canada Post for many years. We would not have been able to do this without her efforts.

And we owe Beth MacLaren a huge, huge thank you. Beth stepped up to edit The Bulletin on two occasions when we were without the elected Bulletin Editor. There are simply no words enough to express our gratitude for her service.

Membership: For many years Lorna Herchenson has been helping the Council out by chairing the Membership Com-mittee. She has been tireless in contacting clubs to remind them of Council membership benefits, as well as contacting new garden clubs to promote membership in the Council. She and Elaine Senft have attended numerous events over the years, staffing a BCCGC table and giving out information on the activities of garden clubs throughout BC.

Parking: At the last meeting, many attendees were met at the entrance to the parkade by Lorna Herchenson and provided instructions on where best to park and given their parking pass. Judging from the comments received this was very much appreciated. Lorna had suggested and offered to do this when the Board had been discussing how to address some of the parking issues attendees had experienced. A really big thankyou to Lorna.Photos: Photographs of our events have greatly enhanced the website and the Bulletin. We have two people to thank for taking the time to photograph our meetings. Vic Froese was our Council photographer during his wife Sandra’s tenure as Secretary. We now have Keith Harris who has stepped up to continue taking pictures at our events. The Council is most grateful for their service.

Information webmail: We have 3 volunteers, Beth MacLaren, Laurie Maitland and Lorna Herchenson, who have undertaken to answer emails that are sent to us at [email protected]. They have worked out a schedule to spread the work. They answer the emails by either responding directly or by forwarding the email to the appropriate board member. These three have been doing a great job making sure that all emails are responded to in a timely manner.Facebook (and Nominations Committee): Our most recent volunteer is Amanda Smith who stepped up to chair the Nomination Committee and subsequently offered to monitor and administer our FaceBook page. Thanks to her efforts you will be seeing more Facebook posts from the Council keeping you apprised of what is happening with the Council as well as with the various gardening clubs and gardens throughout BC. Judges Manual: This committee’s members have done a great job and spent a huge amount of time on the Judges Manuals and Judges Course Outlines. The Horticulture Judges group consists of Emily Budinski, Donna Lawson and Marilyn O’Neill; and the Floral Design Judges group consists of Dorothy Scott, Jane Keding and Lynne White. They have been working on updating the Judging Manual for over a year now, putting in a lot time researching and including the necessary changes where required.

The Council is truly grateful to all of the above people, as well as others who have offered input and suggestions. We truly value their time and efforts on behalf of the Council.

I hope you will join me and Executive Board in extending a heartfelt THANKYOU to all these great volunteers.

Treasurer’s Report

Ruby Miller, Treasurer

Well, another year has wound down and I am actually on top of things (in accounting, anyway). The books are balanced, the audit has been done (delegates can find both in their packages at the AGM), and members can rest easy that the numbers look good. As all members may not be aware (if you weren’t on the executive of your club) I emailed renewal invoices this year (I believe for the first time ever). If your club has not yet received its renewal invoice or if you have mislaid it, email me at [email protected] and I will send your club another invoice.

This year I discovered a lot of interesting facts, talked to a lot of people and learned clubs likes or frustrations with the

Council and we are discussing both. Here’s hoping the likes outweigh frustrations in the future! On another note, this position is up for election this year, so I now have to decide whether to run again or not. How about running for this position (or one of the other positions), and give us all a run-ning opponent. Besides, new blood is always good. See you at the AGM!

The Vancouver Island Rock and Alpine Garden Society is a group of devoted plant lovers, growers, photographers, plant hunters and, finally, gardeners. Our range of interest is not just confined to alpine rock

garden plants but also includes bog dwellers and woodland-ers and other annuals and perennials. These may be native to Vancouver Island or come from anywhere around the world. We are always trying to stretch the limit of what we can grow, sometimes with success and sometimes not.

Club MeetingsThe club has a long history, having been started in 1922 by a group of enthusiastic gardeners who met in each other’s homes. The club has convened every year since 1922 and is the longest continuously operating rock and alpine garden club in North America. The meetings consist of a short business time, a guest speaker, a parlour show of members’ plants, a raffle, and a tea and coffee social. As well, we offer the free use of our extensive library. Apart from the speak-ers we have one meeting that consists of mini workshop/demonstrations and another devoted to member plant sales. In December we have a potluck Christmas Party and in June we meet in a beautiful garden. July brings our annual picnic, which is held at Royal Roads and consists of a potluck, salmon barbecue, and a plant auction.

Spring ShowPerhaps the most unique thing we offer is a juried annual spring show, which is held in March or April of each year. The time varies from year to year to allow for the showing of different seasonal plants. The plant classes include native plants from specific areas both locally and around the world, as well specific categories such as ferns, cyclamen, bulbous plants, sempervivum, rhododendrons, troughs, bonsai, and children’s miniature gardens. Both members and non-members are eligible to enter and compete for the myriad of trophies awarded each year. It is always a magnificent display of beautiful plants that have been carefully nurtured by the competitors. There is a plant sale by specialty nurseries, an artist’s display and sale, a silent auction, seed sales, and a tea room. There is also the always-popular sale of members’ plants, which takes place on Saturday morning. Admission is by donation and includes a chance to win one of many door prizes. This year our Spring Show will take place at Cadboro Bay United Church, 2625 Cadboro Bay Road, Victoria, on Friday, April 8th, 1:00pm to 8:00pm and Saturday April 9th, 9:00am to 3:00pm.

Garden in the ParkAs a centennial project in 1967 the members of VIRAGS began a rock garden in Victoria’s Beacon Hill Park. This garden has been maintained continuously since then by dedicated club members and others on a volunteer basis. They meet at the garden every Saturday morning to carry out the tending of this truly beautiful garden, which continues to give so much pleasure to park visitors. This garden represents the Club’s contribution to the community’s enjoyment of our

local gardens and is a tribute to the dedication and talent of Victoria’s gardeners.

Other ActivitiesOur other activities include ad hoc workshops on plant propagation, trough gardening, crevice gardening, seed collecting and storage, to mention only some. We also have open gardens in the spring and fall. From time to time there are plant exploration expeditions to some of the wilder areas in and around the Pacific Northwest such as the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State.

TAKE A STAND WITH

Get DOWN. Get UP. EASY!

Is it a challenge kneeling andgetting back on your feet?

Do you look for supportto rise to a standing position?

The North Thompson Valley Garden Club draws its members from the area along Highway 5 from McLure to Clearwater and the rural areas surrounding Barriere where our meetings are held. Our garden club started with a founders meet-ing on Sept. 16, 2007. The initial purpose of the garden club was to ensure the viability of the Community Garden located in Barriere. We adopted the Community Garden and acted as steward for it, including the planning and direction of its use. The intent was to keep the community garden central to our focus and act as a base for our club’s activities by holding our monthly meetings in the garden during the warmer months of the year. Each month we invit-ed a guest speaker to present on varied topics. Barriere was incorporated as a District Municipality in November 2007 and the sponsorship of the District for the Garden Club’s

application for funding to build a garden shed from the BC Union of Municipalities was its first official act of business. As time progressed, the ongoing maintenance of the Community Gar-den became onerous and so this responsibility was passed onto the District of Barriere.

The Community Garden is still viable but our Garden Club has changed its focus. We continue with monthly meetings from September through June that encompass speakers, workshops and tours on assorted

gardening topics of interest. We have supported the Seedy Saturday event in Clearwater for a number of years and have an annual Spring Plant sale in Barriere in May that is very popular. We hope that in continuing to reinvent ourselves we will sustain a group of interested gardeners in the North Thompson Valley for years to come.

The South Delta Garden Club

Mid-Island Floral Art Club

The first organizing meeting was held February 14, 1996 at St. Stephen’s United Church Hall, 150 Village Way, in Qualicum Beach which is where the Club still meets today. The founding President was Lynn Bonner who had belonged to Capilano Floral Art Club and wanted the same opportunity to learn design in her new Vancouver Island home. All the first meetings were workshops and for some time Lynn was the only teacher, then several local florists and semi-retired florists pitched in to give a hand with demonstrations.

We meet the second Thursday at 1:45pm. Our website is mifac.org or you can email us at: [email protected]

The Club today has a strong group of members who are interested in taking their floral training into the community. Throughout the years the club has added community events such as Art and Photography and Forest Fanta-sies at Milner Woodland Gardens. The Club members are involved with Art in Bloom at The Old School House Art

Gallery in Qualicum Beach; members make and donate wreaths at Christmas with proceeds going to local charities.

Our big event for the past two years has been the Christmas Gala with a Professional Florist Demonstrator and sales of member made Christmas Wreaths and Designs.

In 20 years, from a small beginning, we have become a recognized and appreciated organization in the community.

9

A new name and a new home!!

After 64 years as the “Evergreen Garden Club”, members have voted for a change to the “South Delta Garden Club”. Although the name has changed, the purpose and spirit of the club will continue to stay the same as the founding members intended “tell us what you know and show us what you grow!!”

In 1952, Zoe Dennison and Gladys Evans envisioned a club whose primary goal was to further horticultural interests in the home and community and sharing of knowledge. The original name came from the idea that the lower mainland climate allowed for gardening all year round. The new name was chosen to conform with current typical naming protocol for garden clubs and to accommodate productive internet searches, something the founding members could not have conceived of in their wildest dreams!!

The club’s annual Plant Sale has been held for the past 60 years even though the first club event in 1956 was a Spring Flower Show with the plant sale as a sideline. Eventually the sale become the focus due to the strong demand for the top quality plants grown by the members of the club.

The plant sale continues to be held every year on the first Saturday of May and is highly anticipated by local gardeners. As the club’s main fund-raiser the sale allows the club to support causes such as the Delta Hospital Healing Garden and garden at the ECU as well as the BC Council of Garden Clubs Scholarship Trust Fund!

Parlour shows, floral art competitions and exhibits in the P.N.E. horticultural show are no longer a part of the club’s activities. However the club still holds monthly meetings with displays of cut flowers, fruits and vegetables from members and topical guest speakers and a regular newsletter is provided full of local knowledge and tours continue to be arranged to public and private gardens or locations of interest!

The South Delta Garden Club welcomes visitors and new members to it’s new meeting location at the Ladner Christian Reform Church (4594 54A St) the third Tuesday of the month from 7:30 pm to 9 p.m. every month except July, August and December.

Vancouver Orchid Society

The Vancouver Orchid Society — still blooming wonderful after 75 years!

The Vancouver Orchid Society (VOS) is one of the oldest orchid societies in Canada and its achievements are due to the hard work of its volunteers. The VOS was born in 1946 when a number of orchid enthusiasts began to meet informally as a group. In 1951 the membership roster numbered 20 members who met regularly in each other’s homes; now we have well over 120 members!

The objective of the Society is the promotion of orchids and helping to educate the public on how to grow orchids. The VOS does this by the monthly meeting speaker, by discussing the orchids in bloom at the monthly show table (with culture tips provided by the members), having an in-house library (and allowing members to borrow the books to read between meetings) and providing members the opportunity buy

reasonably priced orchids not found in stores from local vendors or try to win them from the monthly draw. Most significantly (and unique to the VOS), is the separate 2 hour plant culture class held eight times per year, led by an experi-enced member who shares their knowledge with others. The classes are informal, hands-on sessions where mem-bers can get their orchid related ques-tions answered. The VOS members are also participating in a lively chat forum to help each other through a WhatsApp chat group, where timely tips and lots of encouragement on how to grow orchids are shared. The VOS also has an internet

presence with an up-to-date website and active Facebook page. There are many fine growers in the Society who gladly share their knowledge and experience and all these initiatives mean that the Society is the place to learn and interact with other enthusiasts.

2016 is shaping up to be an exciting year for the VOS, with a great roster of speakers lined up including some inter-national visitors. On February 24th, David Lafarge from France, a noted author and editor, spoke about his special love, Phalaenopsis. At the March 23rd meeting, Adnan Uzunovic, a research scientist, orchid lover and VOS member, will be explaining the ins and outs of Wardian Cases. The April 27th meeting’s speaker will be Lorne Heshka, from Manitoba, an author, photographer and expert in Canadian Native Orchids who will talk about orchids found in the wild from southern Manitoba through to the Churchill area. The May 27th meeting will feature Helen Richards from Australia, and author, native orchid cultivator, and life-time member of the Australian Native Orchid Society, who will be talking about terrestrial orchids from her part of the world. On June 22nd, Thomas Mirenda from Washington DC, Curator for Orchids for the Smithsonian Institute and frequent contributor to the AOS magazine, will

be the speaker. The monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of every month (except December, July and August) at the VanDusen Botanical Garden Floral Hall, 5251 Oak Street, Vancouver. Doors open at 6:30 PM, the business meeting, show table discussion and draw starts at 7.30 pm and presentations start at 8:30 pm. Guests are welcome to our meetings; we invite people to come to one or two of our meetings as a guest and if they enjoy them and want to at-tend more, we encourage them to become members.

The monthly culture classes are held on the 2nd Monday of each month (except January, July, August and December) starting at 6:30pm in the Cedar Room at VanDusen. For the March 14th class Margaret Prat will be taking us through an American Orchid Society Webinar on growing in semi-hydroponic media. On April 11th, Margaret Prat will demonstrate the orchid repotting and on May 9th Chris Janko will share tips on moving plants outside for the summer.

And of course, there is the VOS Annual Show and Sale, which is slated for Easter Weekend, March 26th and 27th (plus set up & preview party on March 25th). This year’s event should even make that famous Bunny sit up & take notice! The vendors list includes two international vendors, Ching Hua Orchids & Ten Shin Gardens, both from Taiwan. BC based Forestview Gardens, Paramount Orchids, Tropical Gardens Orchids, Kitty’s Orchids and Bestco Management. Hobby growers Melanie Gallacher, Richard Pearson and Eugene Banziger will also be there. Lots of beautiful plants to admire in the show and buy from the vendors.

Throughout the years, there have been many dedicated people who have contributed a significant amount of their time to the growth and preservation of the VOS. It is the sweat equity of our volunteers that make things happen!

For more information on the VOS please go to our website: www.vancouverorchidsociety.ca/ or visit us on FaceBook: www.facebook.com/VancouverOrchidSociety/
