Environmental Background
Climate change is a long-term change in the average weather patterns that have come to define Earth’s local, regional and global climates. The changes are primarily driven by human activities.
The greenhouse effect is the way in which heat is trapped close
to the surface of the Earth by “greenhouse gases.”
Greenhouse gas levels rose to new records in 2019
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the primary greenhouse gas
emitted
Aviation accounts for approximately 2% of global
greenhouse emissions

Retrofitting Winglets on Existing Airplanes
• Many aircraft are retrofitted with blended
winglets
• Lower operating costs by reducing block fuel
burn by 4 to 5 percent on missions near the
airplane's design range
• Increase the payload/range capability of the
airplane
• Improve takeoff performance and obstacle
clearance
• Reduce engine maintenance costs
• Increase optimum cruise altitude capabilityBlended winglets are a proven
way to reduce drag, save fuel,
cut CO2 and NOx emissions,
and reduce community noise.

Traditional Wingtip
Without any winglets the air flow over the tip of
the wing will roll up from the high pressure area
under the wing to the low pressure area above it.
When the wing is moving forward at high speed, the
upward and backward airflow combine to form vortices.
These vortices cause lift-induced drag, lowering the
efficiency of the wing.

Efficient Winglet
Boeing uses detailed design, surface materials and coatings to
enable laminar – or smoother – airflow over the winglet. This
further reduces drag and increases fuel efficiency.
The efficient winglet generates a vertical lift component that is
vectored slightly forward and away from the fuselage. Together,
these provide the perfectly balanced winglet that maximizes the
overall efficiency of the wing.

The ecoDemonstrator Program
Since 2012, the
ecoDemonstrator program has
tested more than 100
technologies on 6 airplanes.
Projects include technologies
that reduce fuel use, emissions
and noise, and incorporate
more sustainable materials.
The 2018 program used
sustainable fuel throughout its
testing and made history by
conducting the world’s first
commercial airliner flight flown
on 100% biofuel.
More than one-third of the
projects have transitioned to
implementation at Boeing or by
program partners.
Commercial aviation’s relentless pursuit to enhance safety, improve efficiency and minimize its environmental footprint led
Boeing to create the ecoDemonstrator program in 2010.

Total air traffic in 2018 was
more than triple the 1998 level.
Over the same 20 years, CO2
emissions from air travel
increased by only one third of
the volume growth
Results of Technological Innovation
Passenger traffic
5.9% per year
CO2 emissions
2.4% per year
In the long term,
passenger traffic on
airplanes is expected to
grow by about 5 percent
annually
As the industry continues to grow,
Boeing recognizes that pollution,
natural resource scarcity and
climate change are serious issues
that require credible actions and
global solutions
