Boating  Trends  in  California• Increasingly,  smaller  vessels  are  on  trailers– Less  costly–More  flexibility– Lower  maintenance–Trailerable  vessels  to  35’  are  common

• Dry-‐stack/dry  storage  increasing  –Cities  want  boats  off  roads  and  driveways–Demand  for  launch  ramps,  storage  is  high

–US  made  boating  affordable  for  everyone,  now  a  world-‐wide  trend–Boaters  move  to  larger  vessels  over  time

Bay  Area  Berthing  Costs• SF  Bay  has  lowest  berthing  rates  in  California• SF  Bay  rates  half  to  a  quarter  of  other  areas

• Ironically  SF  has  highest  housing  costs  in  US!  –Highest  GDP  per  capita  in  US– Average  household  income  $121,000– Berthing   fees  based  on  sf,  not  length–Market  demand  drives  cost,  not  size  –MRA  tracks  fees  in  all  CA  regions– Lake  and  ocean  marinas  50:50

Summary• Bay  area  berthing  fees  lowest  in  state• Overabundance  of  small  slips  – Very  old  marinas– Upgrading  very  difficult– Demand  shifting   away  from  small  “wet  slips”– Very  high  demand  for  large  slips   (non-‐trailerable)
