Discussion Outline• Overview of US and California boating• Metrics associated with berth size, boating economics and demographics for SF Bay–Boat industry size–Boat market demand–Marina data, berth pricing –Comparable data in primary CA regions
• Recreational boat industry trends

National Boating trends
• US is half the world market in boats–$121B in economic benefit–650,000 jobs, 35,000 businesses
• 1.2 M boats sold annually in US–250,000 new boats –95% of new boats are made in America–95% are cartop/trailerable boats under 26’
California Boating• More than 800,000 registered boats• $8.9B in total economic benefit – 48,400 jobs; 3,062 businesses
• 8,000 new recreational boats sold in 2016– 4,000 personal watercraft– 95% powerboats, trailerable under 26’– 4% between 26’ and 39’ – 1% are 40’ or more (61 boats)– 4% are sailboats

Other CA Data• More desirable locations have highest rates –Dana point, Newport, Lido– Longest wait lists too (20+ years)
• Most southern CA publically-‐owned marinas independently managed–Experience, long planning horizon
• CA Boating Demographics• 79% of boaters married or partnered• 52% have kids• 74% have household incomes under $100,000• 25% are non-‐Caucasian• Most boaters are guests– Average boat takes 30+ people out per year– Bay-‐area residents have 2.4 boat experiences/year
![Page 4: BCDC Bay&Planning&Coalition& Discussion...5/9/17 2 National&Boating&trends • US+is+half+the+world+market+in+boats –$121B+in+economic+benefit –650,000+jobs,35,000+businesses •](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022051921/600e8d72a755846cee0d6f10/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)

Boating’s Economic Impact on California
• Largest landlocked harbor in world• A premier US boating region • 57 marinas in SF Bay –Most over 50 years old, numbers in decline–Five closed in last ten years in South Bay, two more expected to close soon–Services (boatyard/fuel) also declining

Boating Trends in California• Increasingly, smaller vessels are on trailers– Less costly–More flexibility– Lower maintenance–Trailerable vessels to 35’ are common
• Dry-‐stack/dry storage increasing –Cities want boats off roads and driveways–Demand for launch ramps, storage is high
![Page 7: BCDC Bay&Planning&Coalition& Discussion...5/9/17 2 National&Boating&trends • US+is+half+the+world+market+in+boats –$121B+in+economic+benefit –650,000+jobs,35,000+businesses •](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022051921/600e8d72a755846cee0d6f10/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)

• Cost of used boats very low–Boating boom of the 60’s • Low-‐cost high-‐volume fiberglass boats• 250 boat makers in Costa Mesa alone!• ‘63-‐’72 SoCal slips increased 700%
–US made boating affordable for everyone, now a world-‐wide trend–Boaters move to larger vessels over time
Bay Area Berthing Costs• SF Bay has lowest berthing rates in California• SF Bay rates half to a quarter of other areas
• Ironically SF has highest housing costs in US! –Highest GDP per capita in US– Average household income $121,000– Berthing fees based on sf, not length–Market demand drives cost, not size –MRA tracks fees in all CA regions– Lake and ocean marinas 50:50

Summary• Bay area berthing fees lowest in state• Overabundance of small slips – Very old marinas– Upgrading very difficult– Demand shifting away from small “wet slips”– Very high demand for large slips (non-‐trailerable)
