Lyft’s  Comprehensive  Background  Check  Process

Prospective  drivers  submit  application

Drivers  approved  once  they  pass  the  three-­pronged  process

• Name• Photo• Social  Security  Number• Driver’s  license  number• Photo  of  his  or  her  driver’s  license• Date  of  birth• Address• Phone  number• Email  address• Vehicle  information• Insurance  information

Prospective  Drivers  Must  Submit  the  Following  for  Review:

Identify

Driving  Record  CheckDrivers  must  meet  the  following  criteria:

• Age  21+  with  1  year  or  more  of  driving  history• Valid  personal  auto  insurance  that  meets  or  exceeds  state  requirements

• NO  more  than  three  minor  violations  in  the  past  3  years

• NO  major  violations  in  the  past  3  years  (e.g.  reckless  driving,  no  insurance)

• NO  severe  violations  in  the  past  7  years  (e.g.  DUI,  hit  and  runs,  felonies  involving  vehicles)

Conduct  a  Social  Security  Tracesearches  against  hundreds  of  records  collected  from  all  over  the  country,  including:

• Credit  Bureau  information• Property  deeds,  mortgages• U.S.  Postal  Mail  forwarding  service• Other  public  sources  e.g.  utility  bills,  voter  registration

County  Court  Records• Direct  search  of  criminal  records  from  courts  within  U.S.  counties  that  the  prior  searches  have  identified  as  linked  to  the  applicant

• Search  reveals  any  felony  or  misdemeanor  cases  and  their  final  outcome  (or  current  status  if  the  matter  is  still  pending)

Federal  Criminal  Records• Search  identifies  criminal  case  details  and  outcomes  from  any  of  the  94  U.S.  federal  district  courts

U.S.  Department  of  Justice  Sex  Offender  Registry  search• Searches  the  Federal  Department  of  Justice  (DOJ)  Sex  Offender  Registry

Enhanced  Nationwide  Criminal  Search  &  Locator  SelectSearches  records  collected  from  all  over  the  country,  including:

• State  Department  of  Corrections• Most  wanted  lists• Outstanding  warrants  and  arrest  records

Verify

ID  Verification  ProcessEach  driver  in  California  has  his  or  her  photo  ID  verified  either:• In  person  or• ID  verification  process  that  leverages  information  pulled  from  the  applicant’s  background  check  to  quiz  applicants  who  may  have  discrepant  information

Finally,  before  a  driver  is  approved,  the  driver’s  photo  is  checked  against  his  or  her  driver’s  license.  

2016  bill,  signed  by  Governor  Brown,  that  approved  the  commercial  background  check  processes  Lyft  uses.  

2006  Report  on  Criminal  History  Background  ChecksAttorney  General  report  confirmed  that  commercial  background  check  providers  tend  to  have  more  complete  and  comprehensive  criminal  history  information  than  that  available  through  government-­administered  databases.
