While I was principal at a different school, I assigned a student a couple of days of in-school suspension. While she was in there, she wrote me a letter about her life. The letter described some tragic things she had seen in her household. Her father had physically and emotionally abused her mother and the children. She spoke about being young again and just wanting to be outside riding bikes with her brother. I’ve shared that letter with other educators and it usually brings us all to tears. It reminds us that many children go through things that are difficult to understand. They bring “baggage” to school every day. I promise you that we want school to be a place where they feel safe and loved. We try very hard to build positive relationships with each and every student in our building. Hopefully our efforts are paying off. I encourage you to ask your child who they feel like they can go to at school if they need someone to talk to. If they can’t give you an answer, I want you to call me and tell me. We will do all we can to change that. The student’s letter who was in our in-school suspension room ended by making a statement that we should, “be happy while you’re young because that’s where your smiles come from.” We hope your student gets lots of “smiles” from BCMS. “It’s about learning!”

You can’t learn if you aren’t present. Please encourage

your students to come to school and remain for the day. We may not always be at our best, but or present efforts are better than our

absent efforts.

Please try to arrange

appointments for your child after school or during school breaks. Lost

instructional time is never recovered.

How to get good grades…

Be in school every day, on time. When you miss school, you miss class presentations, notes, discussions, assignments, quizzes, and tests. It doesn’t matter how good you are about making up work, you can never make up all of what you miss, even if you’re out of school for only one day. To get good grades, you must be in school every day.

Unless you have an extended illness or a serious health problem, you should miss no more than

a few days of school a year.
